Hardware and Software

There are about 230 workstations in the Library distributed on floors 1-6. Software is as listed below. No additional software can be downloaded or installed. Additional hardware and exceptions are noted below.

Please report problems to Library IT Services. We also welcome your comments and suggestions.

Software Available in the Library

There are three sets of software available to Library patrons:

PC software available by logging in to a Windows PC on floors 1-6
Macintosh software available by logging in to an iMac on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Library
Software that any member of the UMBC community can access on any computer, both inside and outside the library, through the eLumin Genlab Virtual Desktop (https://virtual.umbc.edu).

eLumin Genlab Desktop Software

Software in the eLumin Genlab Desktop is available through remote login from any computer, smart phone or tablet, whether inside or outside the library. More information about the software available and how to access it is provided here http://virtual.umbc.edu. It should be noted that this software is only available to UMBC students, faculty and staff. Users of the library’s guest accounts cannot access this resource. The Linux operating system is available through this resource by using PuTTY.

Wireless Access for Laptops

Wireless networking is available throughout the library. See Wireless Support for information on connecting to the wireless network.

Faculty, staff, and students can print from their laptops or mobile devices using mobileprint.umbc.edu. Just log in using your UMBC credentials. If you have trouble or need device-specific directions, please consult the Wireless Printing FAQs.

Assistive Technology

General Information

The first and second floors each have 1 computer table and 1 study table that are wheelchair accessible. The third floor also has 1 wheelchair accessible study table. Talk to Library staff for help locating or using these facilities.

The public computers on all floors require a UMBC account or a library guest account to log in. Guest accounts are available at the Circulation Desk with a photo ID.

Assistive Technology Room (455)

Individuals who require assistive technology (AT) have access to room 455. The room remains locked when not in use. The key is available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.

The computers in this room require a UMBC account to log in.

Please remember to return the key when you have finished.
