As we plan for Spring and select courses, many are interested in more information about disability identity, history and context. To support those who would like to know more, we're highlighting and listing courses that take a more comprehensive look at individual and collective experiences of disability-related topics that are a part of the national conversation.

Highlighted Course:

Writing Disability Identities: ENGL 493 - 01 (5128) Seminar in Communication &Technology

:

"Nothing About Us Without Us": this slogan epitomizes the disability rights movement's demand for disabled people to control social representations of their lives and bodies. In this course, we will connect Writing Studies and Disability Studies to explore the efforts of disabled activists to gain inclusion and challenge harmful stereotypes about disability and neurodiversity. Topics and communities we will study include: physical disabilities and mobility; d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing; blindness/visual disabilities; mental disability and neurodiversity; chronic illness and chronic pain; invisible disabilities; and others. Our primary readings will span many genres, from essays and memoir to documentary film, podcasts, and social media activism.
October is Disability Awareness Month

<Tagline>Celebrate the diversity of disability online</Tagline>

National Disability Awareness Month is held
in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived
experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and
varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.

NDAM's
roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first
week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped
Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the
employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of
disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed
the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion
    more broadly.

Americans

The Poetry of Disability, Inclusion and Accommodation

Jerome Ellis is an Afro-Carribean composer, musician and writer whose recent performance at the Poetry Project's House Party became a feature story, Time Bandit, within the This American Life audio broadcast (transcript). Both he and Sean Cane unpack how essential and shared the support for accommodation can be for people with disabilities. We encourage you to take a moment and explore more through the links.

His inspiration for the performance: An author was essentially mocking a Brazilian law that supported people with speech disabilities, enabling accommodation. The conversation goes beyond his performance and becomes a deeper dive into his lived experience and how community engagement, as a support of accommodation and inclusion, matters. The performance is supplemented with Poetry Project's transCRIPted, which is Jerome Ellis's illumination of the softer and subtler audio portions of the presentation.

He quotes Black feminist Kimberle' Crenshaw "Treating different things the same can generate as much an inequality as treating the same things differently" which is fully relevant for BIPOC experiences, and also extends for the inclusion of people with disabilities via accommodation. Inclusion occurs with accessible design, universal design, and accommodation. He reached out to the event organizer - UMBC has robust options as well for people with disabilities.

Accessibility and Disability Services and Student Disability Services work in partnership with the campus departments and event organizers to support equal access via design as well as accommodation. We understand Jerome Ellis' frustration when people are thoughtless about how essential accommodation can be.

Disability can occur at any time, and we remind the campus of the following resources and online processes:

Student Disability Services (department link) works with academic accommodations for all students and links to Accommodate on the home page.

How to register and use the 24/7 Student Accommodate system (link)

Accessibility and Disability Services administers work-related accommodations for faculty, staff and student workers (TAs, GAs and more)

Accessibility concerns may also be reported online at any time (link)

We encourage our entire UMBC community to be more familiar with these campus resources, and to engage with these offices for a deeper understanding of how people with disabilities are included at UMBC, including raising awareness about a concern by, or on behalf of, a person with a disability.

More on Jerome Ellis is linked here.

A close-up photo of a wired stage microphone accompanies the post.

<Tagline>Celebrating Olmstead and the ADA</Tagline>

We celebrate* the summer anniversaries of the landmark Olmstead
decision and the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which
provide more independence and freedom for people with disabilities.

The Olmstead decision
celebrated its twenty-first anniversary on June 22, 2020. This
landmark decision enabled people with disabilities to avoid
institutionalization, and to live in their communities with meaningfully
supportive alternatives as depicted in The Promise of Olmstead video (link). The momentum also created Centers for Independent Living
as local support. The Olmstead decision stood on the shoulders of the
Americans with Disabilities Act which was (then) the most recent
national law to support access and inclusion .

We
are on the verge of the 30th anniversary (July 26, 2020) of the
Americans with Disabilities Act which prohibits discrimination against

public services, places that are open to the public, transportation and

<Tagline>Race, Identity and Context: Angelenos and Gallaudet weigh in</Tagline>

members of the Deaf community use identity-first language, however it
is a best practice to ask and get a clear understanding of how a person
with a disability would like to be identified. We value consent as a
community, as well as the agency of a person with a disability to decide
how they, and their experiences, are represented by others. We
encourage everyone to provide that respect.

We must avoid paternalism and internalized ableism by making
assumptions about the wishes of others and speak from our own concerns,
even if it's to discern supplemental information that has been shared
via direct communication. Accessibility and Disability Services wants
to follow up on disability-related questions and concerns from anyone,
especially allies, who may benefit from more information about
disability-related rumors, concerns and questions via email:
slazar@umbc.edu, phone 410-455-5745 (it's forwarded and has voicemail)

We appreciate all that our community partners and allies do to
co-create a welcoming and inclusive community for people with
    disabilities.

**Am I Next? Written and Produced by ⁣⁣
