Where: The Fireside Lounge, UMBC Commons
When: Friday, December 9, 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Come to mix and meet other adjunct faculty from other departments across campus. Share ideas, hear about projects, get to know more of your colleagues, and celebrate the end of the semester!
Plan to join us, your time permitting, for good food and stimulating ideas. We had a good conversation last year, and we look forward to sharing concerns and proposals. Meet your AFAC representatives, including the three new members--

New members for Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee
Election results
Two members have just been elected to the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee, filling vacant terms for the remaining 2016-2017 academic year. The new members are Maggie Grieves Knisley for CAHSS and Jon Squire for COEIT. Congratulations to both.

Vote to ratify AFAC by-Laws
For all adjunct faculty
Please download and vote on ratifying the attached by-laws for the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee. Simple yes/no ballot.
Takes less than five minutes.
Voting in ratification period will end Monday, November 28.
Ratification determined by simple majority of adjunct faculty voting.
Previous drafts have been circulated and discussed in committee and with administrators and have been vetted by UMBC counsel.
The last step will be to submit the final draft to all adjunct faculty, by posting on this AFAC groups site in myUMBC.
First, though, we invite input on the proposed by-laws. Please see attached. Recommendations welcome. The deadline for comments and suggested revisions is November 14, 2016.

New CAHSS Teaching and Learning Committee

From Dean Casper, of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences:
Dear colleagues,
The Dean's Office is creating a new CAHSS Faculty Teaching and Learning Awards Fund, which will make small grants to faculty members for curricular innovation and redesign.
It's important that faculty members play a major role in (first) designing the criteria and guidelines for these awards and (then) making recommendations about awarding them. Therefore, we will create a new CAHSS Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee, to be broadly representative of our instructional faculty (including adjunct faculty) and of the different types of courses and pedagogy in our College. This committee will also provide advice to the Dean on other matters related to teaching and learning, including such matters as classroom design and teaching awards. I expect that members of this committee will serve for staggered, multi-year terms, to ensure both regular rotation and continuity.
I invite nominations and self-nominations for this committee. If you nominate yourself, please include a c.v. If you nominate someone else, please check whether s/he is interested and arrange for her/him to send a c.v. Members of this committee should have a record of successful teaching. THE INNOVATION FOR TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS (INNOVATE)
CERTIFICATE
FOR CAHSS FACULTY
The
College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and the Faculty
Development Center (FDC) are pleased to announce the Innovation for Teaching
Effectiveness (INNOVATE) Certificate for CAHSS Faculty. This new certificate
program will support faculty as they adopt and refine evidence-based teaching
approaches that challenge students, foster their persistence, and cultivate
their development as 21st century professionals and engaged citizens.
These approaches, informed by the extensive body of research on learning, help
faculty provide all students with
deliberate practice in the skills and habits of mind necessary for learning,
inquiry, creativity, and research. This program is open to all instructional
faculty—tenured/tenure-track, lecturers, and adjunct—who teach courses in the
College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and is funded by the College
and the FDC. The requirements for the two-year certificate program consist of:
·
Attendance
at a minimum of 8 programs during the first year and 4 programs during the
second year, including a kickoff mini-retreat. Programs may be chosen from
designated FDC sessions, and/or designated sessions at the Provost’s Teaching
and Learning Symposium, the MLLI Teaching Circle, the Team-Based Learning
Discussion Group, or other campus pedagogy discussion events (with approval).
·
Participation
in the first or second year in a class observation cycle with the FDC.
·
Participation
in the first year in the FDC’s CATALyst program for gathering course midterm
feedback.
·
Completion
of a survey provided by the FDC at the beginning of the program and at the end
of each program year that fosters participants’ reflection on the effect of the
program on their teaching choices.
·
Help
with facilitation of sessions at the second-year retreat or other FDC
programming during the second year.
·
Completion
of a teaching improvement project developed throughout the two-year program.
Such a project could be a course redesign, the integration of active learning
approaches to existing courses, the introduction of project-based learning to
courses, the development of sample modules for other faculty on effective use
of technology in the classroom, etc.
Faculty
in CAHSS who complete the program will receive the INNOVATE Certificate, and a
letter will be sent to the department chair and Dean documenting their accomplishment
for purposes of promotion or tenure. In addition, each participant who
successfully completes the program will receive a professional development
stipend of $500.
We welcome and encourage your participation in this
exciting new initiative. Participation in the first cohort (2016-2018)
is limited to 10 faculty. Please apply using the simple form attached—DEADLINE AUGUST
26, 2016. Applications will be reviewed by the Director of the FDC and
Associate Dean of CAHSS with the goal of selecting faculty with a range of
backgrounds and interests. Please send your application to FDC Director, Dr.

Three more adjunct faculty receive support
The Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee is very pleased to announce three more recipients of awards for research and professional activities, for 2015-2016.
They are
- Professor Shobha Sobramanian (Asian Studies Department). $500 AFAC award to present at the General Assembly of the World Dance Alliance, Puebla, Mexico. August 7 - 12, 2016
- Professor Diana Parr (Cybersecurity Graduate Program). $240 AFAC award to participate in DEF CON 24, Las Vegas NV, August 4 - 7, 2016
- Professor Laura Casulli (Cybersecurity Law and Policy). $500 AFAC award to participate in the 4th Annual Cybersecurity Law Institute, Georgetown University Law Center, May 25 -26, 2016

Parking on Campus
A one-page summary of parking restrictions and fees
(From the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee)
For adjunct faculty who have found campus parking restrictions
unclear, current conditions are summarized below.
Currently there are
two ways to pay for parking on campus, by permit or by hour. Permits can be
bought in advance. There are two types of permits, daily and yearly.
- Daily
parking permits are $2 per day. Available in packs of 10 for $20 online, or as needed if bought in person. One may buy as
many packs as needed, good up to year 2017.

A
yearly permit is available for $260. It allows parking in Zones D, only. This
is on-the-street parking. The permit is good from September 1 to August 31.
Permit parking enforcement:
Permit parking is enforced from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday
through Thursday, and Friday from 7:00 to 3:30. p.m.
After 3:30 and
during the summer, from May 19 to August 26, faculty/staff with permits can
also use the A & C zones, which have more spaces.
There is a $40 penalty for parking
in the wrong zone
Three levels of appeal:
Waive: $0 additional
Warning: $7 on top of fee
Guilty: $7 on top of fee
Metered Parking
The university
replaced the meters that took quarters in fall 2015. Electronic meters in metered parking lots cost
$2 per hour.
- The
Administration Drive Garage area on top of the garage, near the Retriever
Activities Center, is the largest metered lot. Circling the lot to find a space
may take up to a half hour on the most crowded days, but usually a spot opens
up.
- The
Commons Drive Garage, behind The Commons building, is a small lot. Small lots
almost always filled include Lot 9, near PAHB.
There is a $20 penalty for an expired
meter
Appeal: $7 on top of fee
Note: Do not appeal meter fines. Appealing on meters does not
win. Parking Services says
that a meter is either expired or not; no exceptions.
