Announcing New AFAC Awards for 2016-2017

The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) is pleased to announce its first awards to adjunct faculty members in 2017. The awards are for research and professional development.
May F. Chung (Adjunct, English, Modern Languages and Linguistics; Ph.D. student in Language, Literacy and Culture) has been awarded support to present at the 2017 Southeastern Conference in Linguistics (March 8-11, College of Charleston, South Carolina). Her presentation, "'It's not that they can't produce the sound': Linguistic tips from the ESL classroom" features teaching tips on the needs of English language learners.
Monica Dale (Adjunct, Music Coordinator, Dance Department) has been awarded support to present at the Third International Conference of Dalcroze Studies (Universite Laval, Quebec City, Canada, July 30-August 3, 2017). Ms. Dale will lead two sessions, on "Structured Improvisation" and on "Piano Improvisation in Dalcroze-Influenced Modern Dance."
The AFAC is proud to support UMBC adjunct faculty with these awards.

Research Awards for Adjunct Faculty
The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory
Committee (AFAC) is pleased to announce that we have professional development
funding for adjunct faculty. This is a rolling deadline.
UMBC established the fund, to be
administered annually by the AFAC, to support professional development for
adjunct faculty.
Individual awards will be capped at
$500 for the academic year. The amount of individual awards may be affected by
factors including number of applicants.
Criteria, eligibility, and
conditions are posted at myUMBC. See under Groups (tab at top of screen); go to
the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee group.

What:The Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) fall 2016 gathering for all adjunct faculty at UMBC will be next Friday evening.
Where: The Fireside Lounge, UMBC Commons
When: Friday, December 9, 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Come to mix and meet other adjunct faculty from other departments across campus. Share ideas, hear about projects, get to know more of your colleagues, and celebrate the end of the semester!
Plan to join us, your time permitting, for good food and stimulating ideas. We had a good conversation last year, and we look forward to sharing concerns and proposals. Meet your AFAC representatives, including the three new members--

New members for Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee
Election results
Two members have just been elected to the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee, filling vacant terms for the remaining 2016-2017 academic year. The new members are Maggie Grieves Knisley for CAHSS and Jon Squire for COEIT. Congratulations to both.

If you teach in Africana Studies, DPG, Education, Social Work, or another division not affiliated with a College, you are eligible to vote for your representative on the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee.

2. Click on the "Groups" tab at top
3. Go to "AFAC Elections" group
4. In "AFAC Elections," click on the post for "non-College Affiliated" candidates.
5. Follow the prompt to vote, and submit

Update
The Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee by-laws were ratified with only one vote against.
The by-laws were created by the AFAC with input from administration and university counsel. Ratification is a success for the committee and for adjunct faculty.

Vote to ratify AFAC by-Laws
For all adjunct faculty
Please download and vote on ratifying the attached by-laws for the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee. Simple yes/no ballot.
Takes less than five minutes.
Voting in ratification period will end Monday, November 28.
Ratification determined by simple majority of adjunct faculty voting.
Previous drafts have been circulated and discussed in committee and with administrators and have been vetted by UMBC counsel.
The last step will be to submit the final draft to all adjunct faculty, by posting on this AFAC groups site in myUMBC.
First, though, we invite input on the proposed by-laws. Please see attached. Recommendations welcome. The deadline for comments and suggested revisions is November 14, 2016.

New CAHSS Teaching and Learning Committee

From Dean Casper, of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences:
Dear colleagues,
The Dean's Office is creating a new CAHSS Faculty Teaching and Learning Awards Fund, which will make small grants to faculty members for curricular innovation and redesign.
It's important that faculty members play a major role in (first) designing the criteria and guidelines for these awards and (then) making recommendations about awarding them. Therefore, we will create a new CAHSS Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee, to be broadly representative of our instructional faculty (including adjunct faculty) and of the different types of courses and pedagogy in our College. This committee will also provide advice to the Dean on other matters related to teaching and learning, including such matters as classroom design and teaching awards. I expect that members of this committee will serve for staggered, multi-year terms, to ensure both regular rotation and continuity.
I invite nominations and self-nominations for this committee. If you nominate yourself, please include a c.v. If you nominate someone else, please check whether s/he is interested and arrange for her/him to send a c.v. Members of this committee should have a record of successful teaching.
