The Alternative Spring Break 2018 Participant Application is NOW LIVE! Alternative Spring Break (ASB) will take place from March 18 to March 23, 2018. The application is availablehere or can be found at tinyurl.com/ASB2018UMBC. Applications are Due NEXT WEEK November 22, 2017, by 11:59 p.m.

ASB consists of several student-run, week-long, service-learning trips that provide an opportunity for students to spend a week during Spring Break learning about and contributing to addressing social issues by working with community partners and government entities. This year’s trips focus on social issues such as:

• Public Health

• Health Education

• Food Access & Food Insecurity

• Economic Disparity

Each trip is led by a Trip Leader and all trips will take place in Baltimore to better connect students to the city and introduce them to opportunities for long-term community engagement beyond ASB.

"I will host my 21st Annual How to Pay for College Seminar on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Maryland Institute College of Art Brown Center located at 1301 West Mount Royal Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland.

The purpose of the How to Pay for College Seminar is to inform my constituents about educational opportunities and financial assistance programs to help them attain a college education. The seminar will allow students and parents to learn more about SAT preparation, the college admissions and financial aid processes, as well as scholarship opportunities.

Colleges, universities and scholarship organizations will exhibit in the Leidy Atrium and the financial aid seminar will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Falvey Hall. The event is free and open to the public."

Apply to the Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change

The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and rewards of entrepreneurship and social innovation.  This program places highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored internships to better prepare them to launch nonprofit or social ventures.  Students get training and experience to empower them to become the next generation of social entrepreneurs–working largely in the not-for-profit world, developing and delivering innovative solutions to some of our region’s most urgent social problems.

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on average, 8 to 10 hours per week.  Students receive a stipend of $1,500 toward their compensation. 

Why Participate?
- Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500 plus an opportunity to potentially earn credit
- Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week)
- Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture
- Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities
- Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS MUST:
- Have completed a minimum of 30 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or above, and possess an interest in social change.  ALL majors are encouraged to apply.

The University of Chicago will select up to FOUR current UMBC undergraduates for an opportunity to apply for a deep immersive experience in research activities in economics.  The program is designed for undergraduate students with strong quantitative and analytical backgrounds of all majors. Substantial coursework in not required. 

Program Elements include:

- Depending on interest and background students will be matched with research professionals, graduate students or professors to work on a specific research project in economics.  This activity will start in June of 2018 and extend until the end of August 2018.  Past research activities included work in Microeconomic Theory, Operations Research, Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, International Trade and Finance and Labor Economics.
- Additional classroom instruction will be provided for those students without substantial formal exposure to economics.

Support:
- All living expenses will be covered by the Booth School and the Becker Friedman Institute
- Housing will be provided in undergraduate dormitories at the University of Chicago.
- Travel expenses will also be covered.
- Successful applicants will be offered a stipend of $10,000.

Qualifications to Apply:
We seek applicants with an interest in research and willing to work hard for the summer in a stimulating environment!
3.2 cumulative GPA or above.
Open to all analytical backgrounds including economic, finance, engineering, mathematics, physics, etc.
A strong quantitative background is a plus but is not required.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in disciplines related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, or technology, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA’s programs and mission.
