Anyone on the job market knows about the importance of the
résumé. This is typically an employer’s first look at who you are and what you
bring to the table. That’s why it’s crucial that you can make your résumé stand
    out from the rest.

    Lead with the most relevant
    information. This refers to both
categories and individual bullet points. You want to lead with the most important
information on the top and left-hand side of the page, as well as within
    sections.

    Your personalized LinkedIn URL.
At the top of your résumé with the rest of your contact information, you
can add your LinkedIn URL. Need a personalized URL that’s not full of random
numbers and letters? Go to your profile, and on the right side you’ll see an option to edit "Public profile & URL.” If you need assistance with this, schedule a LinkedIn
    appointment with a career advisor.

    Course projects. If your
résumé is lacking in terms of work experiences, you can include projects from your
classes. Just list the name of the project and/or course and include a few
bullet points highlighting what you did. Remember: coursework experiences do
    count as work experiences!

    Relevant coursework. By
listing relevant courses, you can demonstrate that you have foundational
knowledge in key areas related to the job you’re applying for. You can also
show that you’ve learned specialized skills in a specific area of study.

    Skills as categories.
These can be comprised of hard skills (e.g., programming languages, statistical
analyses, data analysis), soft skills (e.g., communication, leadership,
problem-solving), and transferable skills (e.g., customer service, research
    skills, presentation skills).

    Extracurricular activities. Adding
these to your résumé can demonstrate leadership potential. They also can help
highlight transferable skills that you otherwise may not be able to show on
    your résumé.

Enter ChatGPT and the power of AI. As with any tool or technology, ChatGPT can be used to help move things along in your job search. By knowing just a few simple strategies to ask the right prompts, you can find yourself ready to take on the job market in no time.

One general rule is to use the RTF format, meaning Role, Task, Format. You need to define the AI’s role, outline the task, and specify the format in which you want to receive the information. Here are three ways to put RTF into action.

Conduct job market research with ChatGPT. If you’re new to your industry of choice, it might be helpful to gain information on job roles with the help of ChatGPT.

PROMPT: “You are an expert in software engineering. Please list the top five challenges and top five responsibilities tied to the software engineer role.”

Take advantage of ChatGPT’s memory. If you are looking for ChatGPT’s help on long documents, you can save space on your prompt by using curly brackets. You’ll then include the bracketed information immediately after your prompt.

PROMPT: “You are a hiring manager. I want to apply for {job description} using {resume}. List the top three accomplishments I should highlight in my cover letter.
{job description} = PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION
{resume} = PASTE RESUME”

Ask ChatGPT to act as your career coach. By engaging in role-playing methods while asking for a specific tone, you’re setting the scope of the AI model’s responses. This then can give you a more realistic response based on your prompt.

PROMPT: “You are my career coach and I would like you to help me understand my strengths, weaknesses, and goals by asking me a series of 10 questions. Be encouraging in your tone.”

Taking Inventory and Acquiring New Skills for the Workforce

The skills you’ll acquire throughout your academic life offer more to your future career than you might realize! As a student, you develop technical skills related to your major. Engaging in a wide range of experiences outside the classroom will help you build well-rounded, transferable skills to enhance your academic work and make you stand out.

By reflecting on some of the following questions, you can start to figure out what types of meaningful experiences could complement the academic field you are pursuing:

What do you consider your overall strengths?

What are some interests you have outside of your academic major?

How would you rate your communication skills?

Do you have any leadership experience?

Do you enjoy working in groups or by yourself?

Do you consider yourself creative?

    What’s your approach to problem-solving?

Here are some ways to help you build transferable skills at UMBC!

Join a student organization - Besides being a meaningful way to connect with your peers over shared interests, being involved in a student organization is a great way to take the initiative on projects you care about and work together outside the classroom. You can also add your voice and find your place within our campus community. You can also stay connected through both virtual and in-person campus life initiatives!

Gaining real-world experience through an internship, research, or co-op is one of the best ways to make yourself a competitive candidate for full-time jobs and graduate/professional school. The Career Center offers career advising and counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting, on-campus interviews, career and professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities (internships, co-ops, and research) to help prepare you to envision your future career opportunities!

Consider adding a minor to your degree—Complementing your primary major with a minor or certificate program can be a great way to add extra knowledge and new skills to your bachelor’s degree. It can also be a great way to explore other personal interests you might have and make you unique in the eyes of future employers. Exploring programs such as foreign language studies or entrepreneurship can greatly enhance any major. Check out all the possibilities and talk them over with your advisor!

Get involved with Service Learning and Community Engagement through the Shriver Center – Ever want to apply what you’re learning outside the classroom? The Shriver Center has you covered! You could step outside the school's boundaries and experience the real world through its Service-Learning and Community partnerships. Through The Shriver Center’s many opportunities, the UMBC community can continue to serve organizations through capacity-building projects and digital delivery of services.

Consider becoming a student worker – UMBC has many job opportunities for students. This can be a great way to apply what you’ve learned at UMBC to help other students and gain proper job experience! From tutoring to working in various offices around campus, check out Handshake and the Federal Work-Study job list for campus job postings throughout the year!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about all the different experiences UMBC offers and how they might benefit your overall success! What experiences at UMBC have helped you build your skillset?

Ways to Gain Experience

<Tagline>Learn how to build out your resume using these tips</Tagline>

Here at the Career Center, we meet with students whose work experiences run the gamut. If you are finding yourself lacking this area, here are some suggestions to build out your resume.

Entrepreneurship. Have a good idea and want to see what you can do with it? Consider starting a small business. By becoming an entrepreneur, you can demonstrate you’re motivated, passionate, innovative, and have good decision-making skills. You can also tie your business to your industry of interest as well. Need guidance in this area? The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is another UMBC resource that you could turn to for mentorship and ideas.

Micro-internships. These are short-term professional assignments that allow you to work on a real project in a limited amount of time. Micro-internships are a great option if you’re still searching for semester-long work and need more experience. Go to parkerdewey.com to find available projects. You can also look into theforage.com to gain experience through their job simulations.

On-campus leadership. If you are already active with a student organization on campus you can add relevant experiences to your resume by stepping into a leadership role. You can even try to find something tied to your major depending on the organization’s needs. For example, if you’re a finance major you could be the treasurer of a student organization.

Research. As a research institution, UMBC is home to many research projects being conducted by faculty members across the university. If you are interested in learning more about research and obtaining research experience, you could inquire with faculty members to see if there’s an opening in their labs and/or research teams. If you’re especially interested in pursuing graduate school, conducting research with a faculty mentor is a great way to determine if you want to go down that path, while building experience for your resume.

Volunteer. Connect with a local non-profit or community organization that works for a cause you feel passionate about and see if they need volunteers. You can find out if they need help in your area of study to make it even more relevant for your resume. For example, if you’re a Media & Communication Studies major you could help with the organization’s social media. Another great way to get involved in service-learning and community engagement opportunities is through The Shriver Center.

As you can see, there are a number of different ways you can add work experiences to your resume outside of the more traditional internship positions. Want to hear more about how others do it? Join us at our Inside Scoop: Entrepreneurs Panel Discussion on April 15th at University Center 312 from 12-1 PM.

Whether you’re meeting with a future employer online or shaking hands with employers at an in-person career fair, here are some tips to make sure you’re looking your best.

Clothing. Should be modest, wrinkle-free, and well-tailored with no holes or tears. Do not wear graphic T-shirts or anything in less-than-ideal condition. Skirts and dresses should have appropriate hemlines and tops should have appropriate necklines. No cropped shirts, off-the-shoulder shirts, or shorts.

Colors. For interviews and more formal business settings, stick with solid, more traditional colors. Subtle patterns can work as well. You don’t want to detract attention away from the interview/business setting because your outfit is too over-the-top and colorful.

Accessories. Avoid garish or excessive jewelry. No noisy jewelry as well. Stay away from accessories that are too large and distracting — that includes belts, ties, and purses. Any accessories should be tasteful additions that don’t completely pull attention at first glance.

Footwear. Select shoes that are in good condition and are comfortable to wear. Avoid shoes that have heels above three inches. Don’t wear flip-flops, slippers or athletic shoes. Be sure that you’re able to walk around without pain or too much effort on your part.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to dress for success!

Don’t have any business-appropriate attire in your closet? You’re in luck! Today is the last day to head over to Susquehanna Hall where we’ve set up our UMBC Suits You: Clothing Closet.
