Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
During my internship at The Equity Brain Trust, I was deeply immersed in a dynamic environment where I played a pivotal role in supporting entrepreneurs and driving strategic insights. My daily responsibilities were multifaceted and involved conducting extensive business and market research to provide valuable guidance to 10 entrepreneurs. This included delving into various industries, analyzing market trends, and identifying growth opportunities.

One significant aspect of my role was overseeing the backend data for the Equiscore BI app, where I demonstrated proficiency in API and database testing, along with utilizing SQL queries. This allowed me to ensure the smooth functioning of the app and maintain data integrity.

Collaboration was key to our success, and I actively engaged with my team using tools like Jira for efficient project management. Together, we conceptualized innovative business strategies and developed Ideal Customer Profiles (ICP) and buyer personas to better understand and cater to diverse customer segments.

Creativity and analytical skills were also put to the test as I utilized Canva for design tasks and harnessed Tableau for in-depth data analysis. From crafting compelling presentation decks for business conferences to generating comprehensive reports, I had the opportunity to showcase my abilities in various domains.

Furthermore, I actively contributed to enhancing sales strategies by conducting thorough analyses and implementing actionable insights. This hands-on experience not only enriched my understanding of business dynamics but also honed my skills in problem-solving and strategic thinking on a day-to-day basis.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
The journey to securing my position at The Equity Brain Trust started when I stumbled upon the opportunity listed on the UMBC Career Center platform, specifically through the MTIP Program. Intrigued by the description, I wasted no time in submitting my application in September, eager to delve into the world of strategic business insights.

The application process unfolded across three rigorous rounds, each presenting its own unique challenges. It commenced with a stimulating phone interview where I had the chance to articulate my passion for business exploration and showcase my capabilities. Following this initial interaction, I advanced to the subsequent rounds, which comprised a virtual interview and a comprehensive writing task.

Navigating through each stage of the process allowed me to not only demonstrate my qualifications and enthusiasm for the role but also provided invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. It was a journey filled with anticipation, dedication, and ultimately, immense satisfaction upon securing the internship opportunity with The Equity Brain Trust.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I've found most fulfilling about my position and the organization is the chance to collaborate closely with entrepreneurs and directly interact with key figures such as the CEO, CTO, Research Director, and HR. Their mentorship and guidance not only clarified any doubts or queries I had but also provided invaluable training opportunities. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply and sharpen my skills in data analysis and UI/UX design, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Moreover, the friendly and supportive atmosphere within the team fostered a sense of camaraderie and made every day at work enjoyable. This positive environment greatly contributed to my overall satisfaction and made the learning journey even more rewarding. Overall, my experience at the organization has been immensely beneficial for my professional growth.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I firmly believe that my contributions have left a lasting impact on the Equity Brain Trust's journey towards success. Beyond fulfilling my assigned tasks, I actively engaged in fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment within the organization. Our weekly Wednesday meetings, characterized by casual conversations and a fun atmosphere, provided invaluable insights into the significance of equity in the workspace. Interacting with a diverse array of entrepreneurs on a daily basis was both a privilege and a learning experience, allowing me to broaden my understanding of various industries and business dynamics.

Moreover, my involvement in database tasks, business strategy development, and research on economic development agencies has equipped me with a versatile skill set that extends beyond traditional boundaries. Delving into the realm of economic development agencies and nonprofit organizations has deepened my appreciation for the pivotal role they play in driving positive societal change. Through my work, I've not only contributed to the growth and success of the Equity Brain Trust but have also honed my abilities to navigate complex challenges and drive meaningful impact in the broader community.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
To fellow students embarking on the journey of seeking an internship or similar experience, my advice would be to take a proactive approach in exploring opportunities that resonate with your interests and aspirations. Make full use of university career centers and networking events to uncover potential openings and forge connections with professionals in your desired field.

When applying for positions, invest time in customizing your resume and cover letter to highlight not only your skills but also your genuine passion for the role. During interviews, demonstrate your eagerness to learn and contribute to the organization by showcasing your unique strengths and experiences.

Additionally, don't underestimate the power of networking and informational interviews. Reaching out to professionals in your field can provide invaluable insights and may even lead to unexpected opportunities.

Lastly, maintain resilience in the face of challenges, stay proactive in your search, and approach each experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow. Every opportunity, regardless of the outcome, is a stepping stone towards your professional development.

This personalized guidance significantly enhanced my learning experience and contributed to my overall success in the internship.

Earning internship credit through the Career Center's program was a pivotal aspect of my journey. It not only provided recognition for my efforts but also validated the valuable experience I gained during my time at The Equity Brain Trust. This recognition boosted my confidence and motivated me to further excel in my role.

  4. Keep Up with Market Trends. Volunteering in a field you're interested in allows you to keep a pulse on the latest trends in that particular market. By staying current, you'll be able to speak to these trends in a cover letter or interview, which makes you a stronger overall candidate.
  5. Enhance Your Resume. It can be hard to believe, but volunteer experiences still count as experience. If you're unable to volunteer with a community organization, you can volunteer with a faculty member as a research assistant. By engaging in volunteerism, you can add projects and experiences to your resume. You can also use your volunteer experiences as part of the STAR technique in interviews.

Volunteering can make you feel good for multiple reasons: you're helping an organization who needs it and you're working for a good cause. By being more strategic with your volunteerism, you can feel fulfilled personally, while working on your career path.

Have you changed your mind while taking courses for your major or have transfer credits from subjects outside your major? Maybe you've grown to like a new subject while taking general education coursework?

Harness the full potential of extra electives by completing smaller programs alongside your major--aka Minors and Certificates (U.D. Certs).

UMBC offers a variety of options for minor programs and certificate programs at the undergraduate level.

NOTE: Not to be confused with graduate certificates, all undergraduate minors and certificates must be done in conjunction with an undergraduate degree program. However, this stipulation presents many advantages to your academic journey at UMBC.

Here are the top reasons why you should consider adding minors and certificates to your undergraduate career:

  1. Most minors and certificates contain about 6-8 courses as requirements and may partially overlap with other requirements coinciding with your GEPs or major coursework.

NOTE: Some minors (I.e.,Minor in Social Welfare) are not eligible for students already majoring in the related bachelor's program (I.e.,Social Work, B.A.). Likewise, some programs limit how many courses can double count or come from transfer coursework-- Always ask an academic advisor before making assumptions!

  1. Instead of taking on a double major, a minor or certificate could help manage graduation timelines while incorporating multiple academic disciplines.
  1. Declaring minors and certificates are great ways to reach upper-level elective minimums and work towards other general graduation requirements tailored to an additional field of interest (e.g.,Intercultural Communication,Media and Communications Studies, etc.)

Title of position: UMBC Magazine Editorial Intern and Career Center Social Media Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I had a few different responsibilities for the UMBC Magazine. I wrote a few stories for it and went through the steps that make up that process, including researching, interviewing, writing a first draft, and revising based on feedback. I also helped upload stories to the UMBC website. Another one of my main focuses was the ""Class Notes"" section of the magazine, which includes shorter updates on UMBC alumni. I helped condense and edit down information for the fall magazine's Class Notes, and I took part in a photoshoot for one of the stories in the magazine.

For the Career Center, my main responsibility is posting on Instagram, LinkedIn, and occasionally myUMBC. I post a variety of content, both made by myself and made by others. When our graphic designers provide a graphic, I often write the caption. I also create some graphics and posts myself—specifically the What's Happening This Week, Intern of the Week, and Career Tip Tuesday series. I also sometimes record videos or take pictures, including small interviews with individuals on campus and events hosted by the Career Center. In addition, I help choose each week's Intern of the Week, so if you're interested in being featured, fill out the form at the bottom of the page!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
While in the process of looking for a summer internship, I ran into a former professor on the elevator. I had mentioned my internship to her previously, so she told me about the UMBC Magazine and offered to put me in touch. The magazine already had a summer intern, but I was told I would be kept in mind for the fall.

I still wanted a summer internship, and I had to attend networking events for MCS 144: Professional Communication and Development, so I attended the Career Center Boutique Fair for the Arts. I was encouraged to apply for the social media internship, so I submitted my application through Handshake. After that, I interviewed for the position.

Over the summer, after I had started working for the Career Center, I heard back about the magazine and was offered the internship for the fall. I spent a couple weeks considering my workload, and I ultimately decided to take the second internship.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
UMBC Career Center, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), Faculty Connections, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I've loved having the opportunity to be creative. Neither journalism or social media were careers that I had heavily considered prior to coming to UMBC, and now I can see myself wanting to continue with either. Coming up with ideas for posts and designing graphics for the Career Center can be fun, and seeing my name in print in the magazine was really rewarding.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
The Class Notes section is one of the most important sections of the magazine to a lot of people, because it helps alumni share what they have been up to and see what their former classmates have been doing. I also wrote the "Then & Now" story for the previous issue of the magazine, and I think that's an important section because it helps current or recent students connect with UMBC's traditions and history. It was neat to play a role in reaching out to different parts of the UMBC community.

The Career Center is such a great resource for students and alumni, and I know that social media plays a large role in bringing the Career Center and its events to people's attention. I hope I've been able to make an impact through posting things that encourage people to take advantage of their access to the Career Center and its resources. I also think that Intern of the Week in particular makes an impact for similar reasons to why Class Notes make an impact in the UMBC Magazine—it allows students to see themselves, share their accomplishments, and celebrate their friends.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Don't be afraid to try things. Apply to what excites you, even if you don't think you'll get it. The worst you can get is a no, and you might get surprised and receive a yes. Know your limits, of course, but a lot of the time it can't hurt to say yes to something and see where it takes you. And take advantage of the resources you have at UMBC! There are so many people on campus who want to see students succeed, both at the Career Center and in your classes. Our time as students can pass so quickly, and it's important to take advantage of those resources while you have easy access to them.

I've really enjoyed the connections I've made. I've had wonderful experiences getting to know both of my bosses as well as the other staff, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to learn from them. The support I've received has helped my confidence and created an enjoyable environment to work in. The Career Center helped me even before I started working here; I had my resume reviewed when I was searching for an internship, and that really helped my understanding of how to improve it.

It may seem like you've got everything you need for a successful networking event but there's one more crucial piece of the puzzle: your pitch.

What is a pitch exactly? Usually taking about 30 seconds, your elevator pitch (or commercial) allows you to introduce yourself and make your personal brand known to employers. It's essentially the first impression that you make, so having your pitch well practiced and ready is important when approaching employers.

Keep these tips in mind when crafting your pitch. And if you want somewhere to practice, join us at the UMBC Connects event with ERT on Wednesday, February 28th from 11 AM to 2 PM.

As a key member of the Digital Learning Solutions Department, I play a vital role in bridging the gap between data and decision-making. My primary responsibilities revolve around utilizing data analytics and data visualization tools to support various departments within the company. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Ad Hoc Reporting: I am tasked with handling a wide range of ad hoc requests from different departments in the organization. These requests span various data-related queries and information needs. My role involves quickly understanding the unique requirements of each request and curating customized reports and dashboards to provide actionable insights.
Data Visualization: I work extensively with various data visualization tools integrated with the Learning Management System (LMS). This involves using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or other specialized software to transform raw data into clear and interactive visualizations. These visualizations are designed to facilitate data-driven decision-making and enable stakeholders to easily interpret and derive value from the data.
Quantitative Analysis: In addition to creating reports and dashboards, I have extended my skill set to include quantitative analysis. This involves delving deeper into the data to uncover trends, patterns, and actionable insights. I use statistical and analytical techniques to extract meaningful information from the data and present it in a clear and comprehensible manner.

It's a wonderful feeling to be part of a team that values knowledge sharing, creativity, and innovation.

What truly drives me in my role is the commitment to continuous learning and exploration. I firmly believe that in the ever-evolving landscape of data analytics and digital learning, staying at the forefront requires a steadfast commitment to learning and adapting.
