Title of position: Cyber Operations Analyst Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

Monitoring and Analysis: I closely monitored security alerts generated by the Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system. This involved reviewing logs and data to identify potential security threats.

Triage Analysis: I conducted triage analysis on these security alerts to determine their validity. It was important to distinguish between real security threats and false positives to ensure efficient resource allocation.

Monitoring and Alert Response: In addition to SIEM, I also monitored and responded to events and alerts from various other security monitoring tools, ensuring a comprehensive approach to security.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

UMBC Career Center, Handshake, LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

In my position within the organization, what I've enjoyed the most is the opportunity to actively contribute to the organization's cybersecurity efforts. Monitoring and analyzing security alerts provided a real sense of purpose as I worked to identify and address potential threats, and collaborating with experienced technicians allowed me to learn from seasoned professionals. The dynamic nature of incident response and the need for quick thinking and decisive action made each day engaging and intellectually stimulating. Additionally, the organization's commitment to continuous learning and professional growth in cybersecurity aligned perfectly with my own aspirations, fostering a supportive and growth-oriented work environment that I found highly rewarding.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work, I believe I have made a significant impact by enhancing the organization's overall cybersecurity posture. By monitoring and analyzing security alerts, I helped identify and respond to potential threats promptly, reducing the risk of security breaches. My contributions to incident response and containment measures aided in minimizing the impact of security incidents, thereby safeguarding critical assets and data. Additionally, my involvement in updating incident response procedures and security documentation improved the organization's preparedness to handle future security challenges, leaving a lasting positive impact on its security resilience.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would advise aspiring interns to be proactive and strategic in their search. Start early, research organizations that align with your interests and career goals, and tailor your applications to each position. Networking and attending career fairs can open doors to opportunities. During interviews, emphasize your enthusiasm for learning and your willingness to take on responsibilities. Once you secure an internship, approach it with a strong work ethic, open-mindedness, and a commitment to learning, as this will not only benefit your professional growth but also make a positive impression on your colleagues and supervisors.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

While my internship provided valuable hands-on experience, what I liked most was the sense of purpose and contribution to a meaningful cause. It wasn't just about earning credits or a paycheck; it was about actively participating in the organization's cybersecurity efforts and working alongside dedicated professionals who were passionate about safeguarding digital assets and information.

Overcoming a College Slump

<Tagline>Strategies for Getting through a Challenging Season</Tagline>

"Embrace progress over perfection, and you’ll achieve more than you ever thought possible."

- Unknown

You often hear talk of the sophomore slump- a time when students can experience heightened uncertainty and lower motivation, in addition to second-guessing their choices in their first year of college.

However, we recognize that this same type of slump will likely impact students at all levels - a college slump.

Below, we outline strategies and resources for overcoming a challenging college season; think about how you might be feeling right now: How is your motivation? How are your social connections? How is your physical and mental health? How is your overall organization?

Reflecting on your feelings can help you take the first step toward addressing what kind of support you need. Here are some ideas to get you thinking and to mix it up a bit:

Get a group of friends together for a game night.

Organize a small study group. Even if each person is focused on individual work, having the presence of others with you can be a big mood booster!

Is the weather nice? Meet up with a friend to take a walk/hike or lunch in a park.

Spend time with Officer Chip!

Take a break and check out some fitness classes in the RAC!

Additionally, don’t forget that Campus Life offers many opportunities for student engagement. Check out their myUMBC page or follow the Student Events Board (SEB) for a list of events. Student organizations meet and hold events throughout the semester so we encourage you to find groups and events that interest you!

Academically, you may be feeling a lack of motivation to attend class or study. You also may be questioning your choice of major and wondering if you should change your academic path. Here are some resources and ideas for you to check out to keep your academics on track:

The Academic Success Center has great online learning resources, including a series of interactive videos. Additionally, the ASC offers tutoring services if you need extra support.

Check in with your professors during their office hours or chat with a TA to get assistance with specific questions you have about your course content

Advisors in the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising welcome the opportunity to discuss your academic plans, including any potential major changes you are considering.

Get inspired about your academic and professional journey and attend THE MAJOR EVENT this week!

If making social or academic changes seems too much right now, a step in the direction of your mental health and well-being may be a better fit. If so, we encourage you to explore resources and events available through Retriever Integrated Health.

Slumps are a normal part of any college experience. It may seem like everyone around you has things 100% figured out, but that is certainly not the case! What you do during a slump will set the course for your remaining time at UMBC. The solution is almost always to take some action, no matter how small the step! You got this, Retrievers!

Title of position: Data Analytics Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

In my role as a Data Analyst Intern at ActiveCharge, my primary focus centers around the meticulous analysis of both weather data and wind turbine data. Our central project aims to develop a robust model for the accurate detection of faulty wind turbine blades. Here's a glimpse into a typical day in my internship:

I commence my day by ensuring that the weather and wind turbine data is not just collected but also thoroughly cleansed and prepared for in-depth analysis. This initial step is pivotal to ensure the quality and accuracy of our subsequent work.

The core of my responsibilities lies in the comprehensive exploration of the data. I engage in performing rigorous statistical analyses and craft visual representations that illuminate potential patterns and correlations, particularly with respect to turbine blade faults. This process requires a keen eye for detail and a data-driven mindset.

In my capacity as an intern, I also play a key role in keeping the team informed and updated. Regularly, I share progress reports, highlighting our achievements, and addressing any challenges or roadblocks that we may encounter. Effective communication is an essential component of our collaborative efforts.

In summary, my internship at ActiveCharge provides an exciting and engaging opportunity to immerse myself in the world of data analysis and model development, all within the context of renewable energy solutions. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for growth, and I am delighted to contribute to a project that has the potential to make a positive impact in the field.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I discovered the opportunity for my position through an active job search during my search for a summer internship. I had been proactively networking and reaching out to various companies via email. Fortunately, I came across ActiveCharge, and it happened that they were actively looking for a Data Analyst Intern. After an initial email contact, they conducted an interview, and I was fortunate to secure the position.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

One of the most gratifying aspects of my position and being part of this organization is the ever-changing nature of my daily tasks. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, allowing me to continually learn and grow. This variety keeps the work engaging and exciting, and it has provided me with a broad range of experiences in a relatively short period. It's been a valuable opportunity to expand my skill set and adapt to different aspects of the data analysis field, making it a truly rewarding experience.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

When seeking an internship or similar experience, my advice is to prioritize active networking by engaging with professionals and attending industry events, which can open doors to valuable connections. Be persistent in your application efforts, as rejections are common; keeping a consistent application schedule is crucial. Tailoring your applications to specific companies by conducting thorough research showcases your genuine interest. Lastly, start your internship search early to increase your chances of securing the right opportunity.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

The Career Center was an invaluable resource throughout my job search. Their guidance and support helped me navigate the complex world of applications, interviews, and networking. I particularly appreciated their personalized advice and the wealth of opportunities they exposed me to.

Major Key

<Tagline>Unlock the Major for You!</Tagline>

Some students enter college knowing what they want to study, while others take time to explore their options. Sometimes students may start on one path and then end up on a completely different one. Each journey to choosing a college major is unique and that is OKAY!

If you are still considering your options, we are here to offer some thoughts on the major decision process:

Educate yourself on all of UMBC’s academic programs - majors, minors and certificates.

Consider your strengths and interests - what subjects do you enjoy studying? What type of classroom setting do you prefer? What have you been skilled at academically in the past?

Discuss your options with an academic advisor in The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising - the go-to advising office on campus for students exploring majors or transitioning between majors.

Create a few academic plans to determine which program will help you get to your graduation goal faster or will best provide you with the overall college experience you are seeking (for example, if you know you want to study abroad, perhaps seeing which majors would be best aligned with your study abroad goals would help choose your path).

Don’t assume that your college major has to align with a specific type of job. Many majors offer pathways to various when you consider the actual skill set you are gaining from a particular major.

If you are really stuck, ask for input from those who know you best, but ultimately make the choice yourself.

If you have family pressures to pursue a specific major, what other ways you can bring your interests into your academic pathway? A minor? An extracurricular activity?

Explore parallel paths when your chosen major isn’t working out academically. For example, if you are struggling with the math and science components of Computer Science, perhaps Information Systems, another technology-focused major, might be a better fit.

**SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT**

One timely way to explore UMBC's diverse majors is to attend our upcoming Major Event the week of October 30th.

While we certainly support students taking their time to make this important decision, we do encourage students to decide on a major no later than the end of their sophomore year. This will help ensure you are on track for a timely graduation.

Happy Exploring!

Intern of the Week: Ethan Cheung

<Tagline>Check out Ethan's internship!</Tagline>

    Name: Ethan Cheung

    Pronouns: He/Him

    Semester of Internship: Summer 2023

    Major: Computer Science

    Current Class Level: Junior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Research experience

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

Location of the Organization (City, State): Fulton, MD

Title of position: Software Engineering/Research Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

Under the Cohort-based Integrated Research Community for Undergraduate Innovation and Trailblazing (CIRCUIT) Program at JHU APL, I had the opportunity to learn about and develop image processing software with my team (shoutout Icram and Amaiyah!) for cameras on the Lunar Vertex Lander for the Lunar Vertex Mission, which launches in 2024. This semester, we're also working on image projection and mapping on digital terrain models.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the CIRCUIT Program around October 2022 and applied to the CIRCUIT Program at JHU APL around January 2023.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Friend Referral

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I enjoyed having the opportunity to contribute work to the Lunar Vertex Mission! Being able to work on a real-life problem/mission was super cool and an amazing opportunity to gain insight on software engineering processes. APL is also full of talented, amazing, and supportive people!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The features that my team and I worked on will be implemented into the app that we worked on as a new update. The space community doesn't have a tool with the features we're working on yet, so it's great knowing what we've built will be used by someone else!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be afraid to ask for help; use all the resources that you have! Transitioning from an academic to research environment is tough. Research is difficult, so you or your mentor won't know exactly what to expect, but that's normal! You might be one of the first people to research your specific topic, so it's okay to feel unsure of your research processes.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Earning academic credit is helpful since I get to fulfill one of my major requirements!

Do you want the chance to be the next Intern of the Week? Fill out this form to be considered!
