How to Choose Your Major

**SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT**

One timely way to explore all of UMBC's majors is to attend our upcoming Major Event this month!

Educate yourself on potential majors.

It's a good idea to talk to an advisor or current students in the major you're interested in so that you can get a better understanding of the potential courses and paths you may want to pursue in your selected major. Researching on your own is highly recommended, as well.

List 5-8 possibilities based on your interests and aptitudes.

Take courses that are steered towards potential majors you have chosen. Read the entire catalog sections, all the course descriptions, faculty bios, and any other information about these majors available on the Department websites.

"DON'Ts" for Choosing a Major:

Don't let anyone else choose your major for you.

Your parents, friends, and siblings all have ideas about what you should major in, and it is okay to listen to their insights, but ultimately it is essential to make your own choice. You are the student, and you are making the decision that could affect your future career trajectory (at least in the short run – many people change careers throughout their lifetime!).

Don't assume that a college major will necessarily lead directly to a specific type of job.

The skills acquired from college are of a general nature that can be applied to many different professional settings. The workforce is full of people whose undergraduate majors bear only an indirect relationship to the positions they hold.

Don't stick with a major when it is clear that you are performing poorly in the required courses.

If you notice your grades are low in your major, this may be an indication that it is not appropriate for you. Consider other options in which you can be more successful!

Intern of the Week: Felix Dogbe for Computer Science!

<Tagline>Check out Felix's internship with Amazon Web Service!</Tagline>

    Position Title: Cloud Infrastructure Architect

    Major or Program: Computer Science

    Current Class Level: Master's Student

    Work Term: Summer

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Executive Partners with big firms need quantitative data and metrics to make critical business decisions. Typically, data gathering for these firms involve an extensive process and various teams that would be able to support the requests which impact the speed and effectiveness of decision making. To address this problem, l had to develop an Alexa Skill which queries data and processes the raw data into meaningful information. The Alexa Skill says or prints out (using the visual feature) the needed response to be used in making those critical decisions. This saves the organization a significant amount of time and directs their focus on reaching business goals and satisfying customers.

I designed and deployed the underlying infrastructure components of the solution, including the resources to be provisioned for the Alexa Skill. Some resources deployed include AWS S3 buckets, Lambda, Secret Manager, KMS, Glue, Athena, Eventbridge, Alexa skill, and others. I used AWS CodePipeline service and developed a collection of stacks deployed through the CI/CD framework. The stacks in AWS CloudFormation made it easier to deploy and manage the resources provisioned in minutes.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I came across the internship opportunity as l scrolled through Amazon jobs (the website). I submitted my internship application in mid December 2020 with an aim of landing a Summer 2021 internship position. I received offers from other companies but l felt my interest aligned best with AWS. l went through 3 rounds of interviews with the first being a self paced programming assignment. The second was a pair programming interview which is meant to understand the candidate's technical skills more in-depth, and lasted for about an hour. The final stage was the behavioral interview which was centered around Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles. The whole interview process took about a month and 2 days later l received an offer for an internship.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I most enjoyed the learning experience and the opportunity to join a team of highly skilled Amazonians in undertaking the project. It was an eye opening experience into the field of Cloud computing and getting the chance to interact with diverse people who share a similar goal was super fun. I had the chance to visit Seattle where l met other teammates, took a trip to The Spheres and visited the Space Needle.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

With easy access to the Amazon Alexa Skill, executive partners will be able to get the necessary information needed to make critical business decisions. This saves the organization a significant amount of time and directs their focus on reaching business goals and satisfying customers.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

"Make a plan, start applying early and apply to as many internship opportunities as you can! Although you may receive a few rejections, don't let that deter you from reapplying. You learn from your experiences and the more interviews you partake in the better you become at interviewing.

Also, be open to relocating (out of state), experience other places and visit new sites. Some companies offer relocation packages to assist interns moving to a new city."

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

"Learn and be curious", this is the quote that resonated with me during my internship. Leaders/problem solvers are never done learning and always seek to improve themselves. They are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them. Internships are an amazing way to learn and get experience as you prepare for your respective career field upon graduation.

    Work Term: Summer 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

During Summer 2021, I was given an opportunity by Moss Adams (MA) to intern within their Portland, Oregon Office. Moss Adams is an accounting firm based on the West Coast with 25 offices in total. During my time with the MA Portland Office, I was able to shadow the Tax, Audit, and Consulting departments as well as work on operational projects with other interns. The shadowing experience was 3 weeks long, with 1 week in each department. This process allowed me to narrow down which department I wanted to work in as a full-time employee. Furthermore, the operational projects allowed me to be creative and develop my leadership skills.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

During the Spring 2021 semester, I found this opportunity on LinkedIn, however I narrowed my search to specifically opportunities within the Washington and Oregon states. Before applying for this internship, I thoroughly looked through the Moss Adams website to get as many details as I could about the company. In addition, I used platforms such Glassdoor to read reviews about the company from employees and previous interns. After I was confident in the company and had adequate information for my specific internship, I applied. The application process was done through the Moss Adams website. A week after applying, I heard back from a recruiter for my first round interview (mostly relating to technical questions). After doing this interview, I received an email saying that I was through to the second round interview (I generally chatted with 2 Manager/Director level employees). Soon after the second interview, I received an offer!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

From reading about it in reviews and articles to experiencing it first hand, the best part about Moss Adams has to be the culture! Everyone is friendly and willing to help you in any way possible. I'll give a quick example: for a project during the internship, I had to reach out to different people within my office (of my choice). I decided to reach out to 2 firm partners. You would think their schedule is too packed to be able to sit down for a chat, but they made time. Thus, there are a lot of opportunities to network!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I made an impact at Moss Adams through the charity fundraiser project. My team and I were able to raise $10,000 over 2 weeks time for the Oregon Parks Forever Charity. Our campaign was about replanting trees after the wildfires that happened in Oregon. $1 = 1 tree replanted, thus we replanted 10,000 trees!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Do your research! Never apply without all the appropriate knowledge on the company, especially for interviews. And if you can, talk to current or recent employees/interns from the company you want to work at. People are the best resource!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Know what you want out of the internship.

Considering Graduate or Professional School?

<Tagline>Check out some tips for beginning the Application Process!</Tagline>

Are you interested in Graduate or Professional school? As you explore programs and get started on the application process, here are some useful tips to keep in mind!

Take time to find the right program fit!

Is there something in your major or academic program that’s drawing you to consider applying to graduate or professional school? Don’t be afraid to start the conversation with advisors or professors in your academic department to start to think about pathways that might be right for you. UMBC faculty were once where you are right now, and will undoubtedly have great insight about the process or connections to programs that might interest you. Use your networks to your advantage!

Once you research programs that interest you, try to visit those schools – check out in-person and virtual admissions/recruitment events put on by the institutions and connect with the campus. You’ll have the opportunity to explore how the campus is laid out and learn about the surrounding area, housing options, and the studio/classroom/lab facilities. Ultimately, you should be asking yourself, “how is the campus and does it seem like the type of environment I would like to spend time in?”

You’ll also have the chance to connect with program directors, faculty and current graduate students. You’ll want to consider whether or not the program has a professor who shares your research areas of interest. And meeting current students is especially important if your program will use a “cohort” model – meaning you will work with the same people throughout the duration of the program.

Finally, take time to research class options – some programs will provide more flexible schedule options including evening, weekend or online classes, while other programs may be more traditional and have classes throughout the day.

Graduate Admissions

The majority of graduate and professional programs will require you to complete an entrance exam, similar to taking the SAT or ACT when applying to UMBC. See below for which exam you might be expected to take:

Dental School: DAT (Dental Admission Test)

Business and Management Schools: GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

Master’s and Doctoral Programs: GRE (Graduate Record Examination) *Most common graduate admissions exam*

Law School: LSAT (Law School Admission Test)

Medical School: MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)

Pharmacy School: PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test)

For graduate programs in the Visual or Performing Arts (such as Master of Fine Arts programs), you might need to prepare for an audition or portfolio submission of creative work as well. It’s important to research all the components necessary for any application and make sure you start the application process early!

Letters of Recommendation – ask early and ask people who know you best!

Most applications to graduate or professional school will require you to submit letters of recommendation. Your recommenders should be individuals who know you well, such as a professor who taught you in several courses or a research mentor.

Start by setting up a meeting to ask for a recommendation, which will help emphasize how important the letter is to you and give you the chance to provide context and answer questions your prospective recommender might have.

Allow at least two months prior to the deadline to give your recommenders enough time to complete the recommendation.

Funding Graduate or Professional School

Another important aspect to consider is how exactly you will be funding your graduate or professional school program. The UMBC Career Center does a great job at breaking down the different components associated with funding your graduate education. It’s important to make sure you understand if there are scholarships, grants, financial aid or graduate assistantships available through the program you are exploring.

Intern of the Week: Daniel Cleaver for Computer Engineering!

    Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Spring 21, Summer 21, Fall 21

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I developed a dashboard for BGE's innovation team, introduced time savings, improved task efficiency, and most importantly, gained new insights into our program. I participated in engaging employee training events and worked hands-on with BGE/Exelon's innovation teams.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I received an email announcement from the UMBC Career Center that BGE was looking for a Spring 21 co-op, and they were specifically interested in undergraduates in my field. I was not planning to co-op during that semester, but I decided to apply anyway.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed learning how to use Microsoft Power BI and being able to immediately apply those skills to a real-world project.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I built, and continue to update, a dashboard that my team uses throughout the day. This has improved our process, and even started conversations with BGE's sister utility companies about similar efforts.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Go for it! Be flexible with job descriptions and assignments, don't feel bad for not being an expert overnight, and remember you are there to learn.
