Intern of the Week: Agatha Turyahikayo for Computer Science!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with Apple!</Tagline>

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Apple

Position Title: Software Engineering Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Science Major, Music Minor

Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I was an intern on the Mail Team, which develops
the Mail app for macOS and iOS. All of my work was under a non-disclosure
agreement, but I was working on the Mail Frameworks team, which does all the
backend engineering. I was working with the programming languages Swift and
Objective-C. I also used Github to do source control related things, like pull
    requests and code review.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I went to the Grace Hopper
Celebration, the world’s largest conference for women in tech, in September
2018 with a sponsorship from the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT). The
conference has a big career fair, so I went to a ton of company booths and gave
them my resume and elevator pitch. One of the engineers at the Apple booth gave
my resume to her manager and by the end of the 3-day conference I had 2
technical interviews and was extended an internship offer. To prepare for the
technical interviews, I did mock whiteboard interviews, practice problems on
websites like Hackerrank and Leetcode, and read through a lot of a book called Cracking
    the Coding Interview.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

Learning about macOS and iOS
development for the first time at Apple was a really unique opportunity,
because I sat and worked alongside engineers who have worked at Apple for many
years. These engineers have developed fundamental software features,
frameworks, and paradigms that currently exist in Apple devices. I also enjoyed
seeing the scale of the software development process at Apple, since it affects
billions of active devices and millions of customers worldwide.

How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?

I had all of the weight for
making critical decisions for my intern project, so it allowed me to have a lot
of freedom in how I chose to implement it.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Apply to every internship you can. Bring a ton
of resumes to career fairs and have an elevator pitch prepared. Talk to
companies you don't think you have a chance with.

Connect with Agatha: agatha3@umbc.edu

New interns are announced every
    Friday!

Intern of the Week: Gabrielle Franks for Music Technology!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with the 9:30 Club!</Tagline>

Name: Gabrielle Franks

Internship, Co-op or
    Research Site: I.M.P. / 9:30 Club

Position Title: Marketing Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Music Technology

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your
internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day
    responsibilities.

As
an intern for 9:30 Club, I mainly conducted research regarding concert
production with a focus on marketing and promotions. I assisted the promotions
    department in and out of the office, interacting with the music and fans alike;
this included getting to work at tables for concerts at The Anthem,
Merriweather Post Pavilion, and Lincoln Theater! My favorite show that I
attended through my internship was Billie Eilish at The Anthem.

Describe the process
of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your
    application?

I
originally reached out to Matt Doherty - my supervisor, and the person who runs
the internship program at the 9:30 Club - in March of 2019, and asked about any
opportunities that they had for the summer. He was eager to send me all of the
information and was happy to answer my questions about the position. Once I
submitted my application, they took about 3 or 4 weeks to review it and emailed
me with an offer for an interview. Following the interview, they emailed me
after about a week to extend an offer for an internship position to me!

What have you enjoyed
the most about your position or organization?

The
relaxed environment! There's not a very strict dress code, the faces in the
office were always friendly, and I met some really interesting people through
the program that I wouldn't have met otherwise.

How do you believe
you have made an impact through your work?

I
contributed in various ways to the work that the office completed this summer,
but I really enjoyed getting to create media content for the advertising team.
I was able to create video montages to post online in order to promote various
shows which was super fun and a great creative outlet for me.

What advice would you
give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar
    experience?

Make friends! Making
contacts is so important, especially in the marketing realm - reach out to
people, invite them to coffee, and don't be afraid to make genuine connections
    with your peers!

Also, the Career
Center has been a great resource as a student and as an intern. Getting
feedback on resume building and receiving advice via email throughout the
summer as an internship practicum student was super motivating and acted as a
reminder for me to make sure I got as much out of this summer experience as
    possible.

Like the Career
    Center on Facebook

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next
Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned. New
    interns are announced every Friday!

Intern of the Week: Zane Poffenberger for Political Science!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with the Maryland General Assembly</Tagline>

Name: Zane Poffenberger

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Maryland General Assembly

Position Title: Legislative Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science and History

Work Term: Spring 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I interned with Delegate Dana Stein who represents District 11 in Baltimore County and who serves as the Vice Chair of the Environment and Transportation Committee. Most of my time was spent responding to constituent emails and calls, assisting in filing and evaluating scholarship applications for the Delegate's Scholarship awards, researching for/editing testimony for the Delegate's bills, meeting with advocacy groups to hear their concerns if the Delegate was unavailable, and providing any other assistance to the Delegate or my supervisor.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I found the position through the Career Center who subsequently connected me with Dr. Hussey who is the advisor for internships in the public policy area. I heard about the position in early October and submitted my application at the end of October. I then had an interview with Delegate Stein's Legislative Director in mid- November and was offered the position.

Which resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks, Faculty Connections

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The most enjoyable part of my position was being able to see government and public policy operating in real time. The Maryland General Assembly introduces over 3,000 bills per year, so it was really interesting to see what bills and topics were given priority in being debated and signed into law. It was also interesting to see all the moving parts within state government such as the legislature, the Governor's office, outside interest groups, and constituents. I really enjoyed being able to engage in the process of policy through helping Delegate Stein with his legislative goals.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think I made an impact by making sure that citizens in District 11 received a response on the topic they emailed or called about. I also think meeting with interest groups that were made up of District 11 citizens was impactful as it was great to talk about issues and the passion they had for the subject at hand.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Go for it. Apply for a position or to an organization that shares your interests and passions. Do not be afraid to ask for help from resources such as the Career Center as they are great in helping you get the assistance you need. The Career Center is a great resource that provides resume building help, mock interviews, and internship search guidance. Their services are helpful, supportive, and most importantly free of charge!

Connect with Zane:

Twitter - zaner23

Instagram - zaner12345

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
