Intern of the Week: Amul Choudhary for Biochem/Molec. Bio

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,
or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks,
    responsibilities, and assignments.

My internship took place inside the Division of
Cancer Treatment & Diagnosis at the NIH Headquarters in Bethesda, MD. Daily,
my main project at the start was development of a searchable database of
patients so that the department could observe trends in demographics, cancer
types, and trial enrollment as well as work on speed in onboarding new
patients. To accomplish that, I had to first overhaul some of the onboarding
procedures the DTCD was using. While developing the database, I worked on a
Phase II trial analyzing patient responses to a drug and eventually my analysis
was used as part of a published (pending) manuscript. I presented my findings
at Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD to some of the administration of the NCI as
well as participated in the NIH Poster Day. This was all during the summer and
now I am back there during the Fall continuing to refine and expand the powers
of the database as well as shifting through results of other trials hoping to
    add to other ongoing publications..

Describe the process of obtaining your
    internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I applied through a personal contact, then was
asked to gather letters of recommendation and submit to a background check
    before being given an interview.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization/company?

Meeting some amazing people and expanding my
    network

How do you believe you have made an
    impact through your work?

The analysis I completed for the Phase II trial
will most likely play a major role in having the drug in question approved by
    the FDA.

What advice would you give to another
student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be ready to commit time outside the office and
do lots of research on your own time to be always up to speed. After all,
"opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls
and looks like work." A lot of work is the pure drudgery of pouring
through patient files, but also some of the most interesting discoveries are
    made at the 11th hour.

Networking 101!

I’m part of the Mock Trial team and this year’s case revolves around the issue of age discrimination. The employee who was fired is arguing that she should receive $2.5 million in damages because of emotional distress. In order to receive those damages, however, she must have tried to mitigate those damages by looking for employment. On the witness’s cross, the attorney always has a line of questioning that goes something along the lines of “you didn’t apply for any jobs? You didn’t have a resume? You didn’t attend any networking events? You didn’t even have a LinkedIn account?”

LinkedIn is a resourceful way to find jobs. In the modern age, we see the importance of social media in every aspect of our lives. That applies to our professional lives as well. The use of online platforms to network and extend invitations for employment is becoming increasingly more popular. That’s why it is important to make your social media presence stand out.

Pick and choose what you post carefully, though! Make sure you aren’t posting anything to any of your social media accounts that you would not want an employer to see. It’s incredibly easy to just google a name and find all of those pictures you wish you had untagged yourself from.

One way to bolster that social media presence is to make a LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network. You can use it to connect with old classmates and friends, discover new employment opportunities, and search for relevant articles for your industry.

LinkedIn is a place for you to develop your professional brand and broadcast that brand to different employers. The more you take the time to develop that brand and your profile, the more likely you are to make connections with employers interested in your work and experience.

So how do you get started with making a good profile? Here are some tips:

Always add a professional profile picture.

Feel free to include a summary where you explain what your focus is, and what some of your biggest accomplishments are.

Your profile should be formatted like your resume, but feel free to include a little more detail.

Add your contact info (website, email, portfolio, etc.)! This action will make your profile stronger.

Be active- join groups! Joining groups and making connections is how one/you can get endorsements on LinkedIn.

To learn more about LinkedIn, check out the Career Center’s Career Guide here. There are tons of tips in the guide. More resources on networking can be found on the Career Center’s website as well.

One group that all of you should join is the UMBC Alumni - Student Networking Group. This group is the perfect place for all of you to get into contact with people looking to hire UMBC students. You can also learn what alumni of UMBC have done post-graduation. There are also tons of posts about ways you can develop your professionalism. Check it out here.

If you’re interested in additional information about how you can improve your networking skills and your LinkedIn profile, on November 14, 2016, from 12-1 PM in Commons 331, the Career Center is hosting a Keys to Success focused on those skills. Make sure to attend so you can get all your questions answered!
Personally, I get extremely nervous at different networking events. Platforms like LinkedIn make it easier for me to communicate my skills and experiences with potential employers in a way that’s completely different than face to face interaction.

Intern of the Week: Chip Rittenhouse for MCS

<Tagline>Learn more about Chip's experience at Renegade Productions!</Tagline>

Name: Chip Rittenhouse

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Renegade Productions

Position Title: Production
    Assistant/Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Media and
    Communications/ Anthropology

Expected Graduation Year: Spring 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,
or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks,
    responsibilities, and assignments.

At Renegade, I enter a workplace that is full of
eccentric creators where an atmosphere of collaboration and creativity are
contagious! Not only do I enter each day at Renegade with excitement at what
the day ahead may hold, but I also know that I will learn something new each
time I am there. Whenever filming a project for a client I am on set as a
supportive member of the production team who has input in terms of how
something looks on screen but also I gain first hand experience with set design
and handling professional level equipment which has been an immeasurable
opportunity. Whenever not on set with a client filming, I can be found in the
production department seeking out future clients for the company; or taking
part in pre-production, where I'm working on sound tracks or stock footage that
fit a genre of projects we are working on. On top of that, having the chance to
work with directors and producers at Renegade on a day-to-day basis and having
the opportunity to ask them questions about the industry firsthand is something
    I am incredibly thankful for.

Describe the process of obtaining your
    internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I attended a social event in Baltimore city
through the Maryland Film Industry Coalition. I also utilized UMBC Career
Center to learn how to approach the internship professionally.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization/company?

I am working in the field with professionals in
the industry of commercial and cinematic production and so having the
opportunity to learn from them first hand is what I enjoy most. At times I feel
as though I should pinch myself because all the new things I am learning
at such a rapid pace seems unreal.

How do you believe you have made an
    impact through your work?

Keeping a client's project on schedule making
sure it doesn't go over and cost them more money than what was projected is a
major goal of mine each time I'm on a live set. However, moments that stick out
    to me the most is when I am thanked by the others on set for doing my job well;
it makes all the hard work that I am doing pay off and it is in that moment
where I feel as though I've made a true impact and have represented myself as a
    valuable member of the production.

What advice would you give to another
student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

This is a dream internship that I feel
incredibly thankful to have gotten. With that said, I attained this
internship through a very unique circumstance. It was complete happenstance
that the last person to leave the Maryland Film Industry Coalition event was a
director with the Renegade Productions department. Moreover, little did I know
this person who I struck a random conversation with would help me in attaining
an intern position with Renegade. So I suppose my bit of advice to any other
student struggling to find their ideal internship, or an internship in general,
perhaps taking a step outside of their comfort zone and thinking outside of the
box in terms of reaching out to prospective internships will garner the dream
internship they are seeking. Put yourself out there, whether it's in person or
having a strong social media presence, and I can almost guarantee that your
your name will come across someone’s desk along the way.

P.S. Sending a wide expanse of self introduction emails doesn't hurt your
    chances either!

Tips to help you land an internship!

Landing an internship is hard. I’ve poured hours into writing cover letters, perfecting writing samples, and tweaking my resume for so many of the internships I’ve applied for. I’ve probably applied to 20 different internships over the past two years, and I’ve only actually ever had 2 of them, so you can imagine how much time and effort went into each and every single one of those applications.

I found that starting the internship search was probably the hardest part of the process. For me, writing a resume from scratch and learning how to structure a cover letter were the most difficult tasks to tackle. I had no idea where to begin. Then I’d start stressing out about how I was never going to get an internship because all of my professional documents were horrible, and that led me down the dark path of “I’m never going to get into law school.”

It’s the never ending cycle of “I won’t ever get a job because I have no experience, and I have no experience because I have no job” that demotivated me from starting the process. But once I got rid of that misconception, things got a little easier. Employers know that we are college students with a million different responsibilities.

So how do you get started?

Create a resume- a task that’s easier said than done. Check out the Career Center’s website for a number of different tips that can help you complete your resume. From resume do’s and don’ts, to formatting and layout advice, you can find everything you need to start your resume on the website. After you’re done, come to the Career Center during drop-in hours (2-4 PM M-F, Math and Psych 201, and 6-8 PM Tu, Th, the Library’s Writing Center) to get your resume reviewed.

Start your search for internships and jobs. UMBCWorks is a great place to find different job postings, but if you’re not ready to go right into the search, check out this link to help you get started. Keep in mind that your resume, and any other document you submit with your application, should be specifically tailored to the position that you’re applying for. Pick and choose what is relevant!

Do your research. Not only on the companies that you’ve searched for online, but check out the Career Center’s calendar to see all of the different employers that are specifically coming to campus just to interact with UMBC students. These are great opportunities for you to get your foot in the door.

I know that trying to find an internship is scary, but if you put in the preparation and the time necessary to have a successful experience, you’ll see that it’s a lot easier than you may have thought.
