You’re never truly alone at AOK. If you’re struggling in a Math or Science course, stop by the
Math and Science Tutoring Center and the
Computing Success Center, both of which are available for drop-in tutoring and in-depth tutoring appointments. And for all your writing needs, check out the
Writing Center! The Writing Center offers scheduled appointments and is a space dedicated to helping UMBC students with writing in any class at any stage of the writing process. All are located on the first floor of the Library with online tutoring available as well!

- Subject librarians who can provide personalized, one-on-one research appointments to help you navigate library resources so you can get organized and get your work done!
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL) – Need a book that UMBC doesn’t have? No problem! ILL lets you request books and other materials from other institutions connected to UMBC’s network and have them sent to you, free of charge!
- Special Collections - The Special Collections department collects materials of enduring historical and cultural value -- housing, preserving, and making accessible materials that are original, rare, unique, fragile, and archival. Contact the staff for on-site as well as remote support!
- The Library Gallery – The Library Gallery presents exhibitions and public programs drawn from UMBC’s Special Collections, emphasizing the history and cultural impact of photography. There’s also lectures, and educational programming sponsored by campus groups throughout the year. Check out current and upcoming exhibitions this year!
- Loaner Laptop Program - This program provides the UMBC community access to Mac, Windows, and Chrome laptops on a first-come, first-served temporary basis.
- Digital Media Lab- The Digital Media Lab provides all UMBC students with tools to create and edit new and re-use existing audio, video, and graphic design objects. There’s equipment available for use within in the space itself and some that can be checked out. Equipment and software are available on a self-serve basis, with access to staff assistance, manuals and online help!

I worked to develop a performance tracking system for use with AWS AQUA service.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I applied for the position through the AWS career website.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
I was able to learn a lot from leading software engineers, system engineers and database engineers while I worked to develop the performance tracking system
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I successfully completed the system that I was tasked to develop and it was deployed.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Learn to ask the right questions, and do not be intimidated when you are not sure about a new concept.

The oceans have inspired awe and intrigue since the beginning of
time, with heroic tales of exploration passed down through countless
generations. Now, we are offering a unique ocean educational adventure:
the chance for twelve young explorers to travel to Gibraltar on January
5thand join OceanX’s research and exploration vessel, OceanXplorer, on
its voyage to Malta.
For a chance to join the expedition, budding university-aged
explorers are invited to answer the following prompt: Describe your
dream scientific ocean exploration and storytelling project. How would
you use OceanXplorer’s state-of-the-art facilities and resources in
your mission? Get creative and show us your exploration chops.
Submissions must be received by 11:59 PM EST November 18, 2021.
We are looking for individuals of all backgrounds and disciplines
(physical and biological sciences, engineering, filmmaking, technology,
communications, etc.), who are interested in pursuing a career focused
on the ocean. Selected candidates will have full financial support for
travel, lodging and meals.
Explorers will participate in an eleven-to fourteen-night expedition
aboard OceanXplorer, OceanX’s one-of-a-kind, world-class, 87-meter
research and exploration vessel. Explorers will hear amazing tales of
past missions, learn from our expert team of scientists, storytellers
and crew members, execute important scientific, media and operations
projects in furtherance of our social welfare mission, and gain
firsthand experience in ocean exploration.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
I started my Co-op with Exelon (BGE) in Aug 2021. Exelon is the nation's leading competitive energy provider. My daily tasks as a co-op revolve around data, which is no surprise given the job title. As a Data scientist, I spend much of my time gathering, analysing, merging, shaping & looking for patterns or trends in data but in many ways and for many different reasons. I am also involved in developing and testing machine learning models & building interactive dashboards that provide real-time insight into key metrics by allowing end users to visualise, filter, and dig deeper into their data.
I try to seek to determine the questions that need answers, and then come up with different approaches to try and solve the problem. Another important aspect of my role is communicating with stakeholders and audiences who sometimes are not data experts.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
At UMBC, opportunities can present themselves anywhere; Be vigilant.
I received an email announcement from the UMBC Career Center regarding the fall co-op opportunity at Exelon (BGE). I applied, heard back from the company after 3 weeks and was invited for a virtual interview. A committee interviewed me, asking technical questions to assess my knowledge and approach to data science.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
My favourite part about this position was the learning experience and the opportunity to join a team of highly skilled people in undertaking the project. It was an eye opening experience into the Energy domain. I got a chance to interact with diverse people and make strong connections. The culture at Exelon (BGE) is really impressive where they prioritize safety, diversity and inclusion. I get a chance to connect with managers & supervisors on a regular basis to ask questions and seek feedback. From day one, they made me feel welcomed by being accessible and making it clear that interns/co-ops are an important part of the organization.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I've been working on a variety of Data Science use cases and presented the results to the stakeholders through interactive dashboards. The stakeholders utilize these results regularly in their daily, monthly and quarterly planning activities.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Work hard! Make a plan, start applying early and apply to as many opportunities as you can. Get your resume reviewed as soon as possible and keep it up to date always. Do not allow rejections to let you down. You learn from your experiences and the more interviews you appear for, the better you become at interviewing. I would also advise students seeking employment to network! Networking helps a lot. Be sure to make those connections and communicate with others. Also, the Career Center is a great tool to help jump start your career, so take advantage of those resources. Attending the Career Center events and workshops definitely helps.

General Body meeting 11/12/21!
Hey Pre-Pharmers!,
As the semester is coming to a close we have just 2 meetings left! Next GBM will be held Friday November 12, 2021 at 12pm via webex. We will be discussing the life of a Pharmacy Technician, as well as what classes to take to prepare you for pharmacy school! We hope to see you all there, the webex link will be below including the password.
A little update on our Mentorship program which will be in effect from now on into second semester. Each E-Board member has been assigned mentee's and should have either reached out to you already, or will be reaching out to you soon! We still have room left for other mentees so if you're interested please fill out the form that will also be linked below and we will assign you an E board mentor! Lastly, within the Mentorship program we are looking for future E-board members in which you will have the opportunity to shadow the position you're interested in! If being a part of UMBC Pre-Pharmacy Society E-board is something you would like to do, signing up for the mentorship program would be amazing!

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
During Summer 2021, I interned at Chesapeake Employers' Insurance Company as a Statistical Analysis intern. Chesapeake Employers' is Maryland's largest writer of workers' compensation insurance. They are a not-for-profit, non-stock, private corporation. I would generally pull numbers from company files and compile them all into an excel [sheet] making it easy for my supervisors to look through and see how they are doing with the companies they provide workers compensation for.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I often check UMBCworks for internship postings. I came across the job posting on UMBCworks and decided to apply.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
I enjoyed being able to learn new skills and meet new people. I also enjoyed being able to use the skills I learned in ECON320 to help with the projects I was assigned.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Helping the company update expense constants and written premiums on companies they provide workers compensation for, making it easier for Chesapeake to see where they stand in numbers.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Always remember you are there to learn, don't be afraid to ask for help!
