Reflect, rest and reset over Summer

<Tagline>Questions for the end of the academic year</Tagline>

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” – Maya Angelou

And just like that the spring semester has come and gone but you’ve made it!

For over a year now, we have witnessed UMBC grit at its finest and we see you out there working hard and moving forward. Together, our campus community has remained connected and has pressed forward amid great adversity and uncertain times.

We have all adjusted to the changes brought on by COVID-19, and though it may be difficult to remember what the academic year was like before we became a virtual community, we are very excited to prepare to come together as a campus once more!

As the spring semester winds down, we encourage you to approach the summer season as a time to RESET with some well-earned rest and reflection. Recognize the growth and development that took place over the entirety of this past year and be proud of your accomplishments. Take some time to celebrate your wins, big and small!

We also are aware of the many challenges and obstacles you’ve faced along the way. Take some time to identify any obstacles or challenges you faced and take the opportunity to develop new goals and/or strategies that will better position you for the road ahead. What have you learned this past year? And how can you use the summer months as a mental reset to assess your plans moving forward?

Consider the following questions to get you started:

Academically, what kind of year did I have?

What were my successes and what were my challenges?

How did I fair in online classes? If I enroll in future online courses, what adjustments should I make in terms of time management and/or communicating with my instructors?

We encourage you now to take some time to consider your academic plan and timeline to graduation:

Did I complete as many credits and courses as I had planned?

Do I need to repeat any courses? Check out our academic policy regarding 3rd attempt course repetition if applicable.

What are some ways I can get some more academic support next semester? The Academic Success Center has a lot of great resources!

Am I taking any summer courses? Summer sessions can be a great way to a way to catch up or get ahead. Summer registration is still open and doesn’t require advising clearance. Remember, Finish 15 to stay on track!

What about your academic major? What is your current satisfaction and confidence level with your major, are you looking to seek any changes? Consider the following:

What aspects of my major am I enjoying and what uncertainties do I still have?

How does what I'm studying impact my future career goals?

If you are still undecided or are considering changing your major: what steps can I take to make progress towards a decision?

Do I have any GEPs left to complete? Can I use any of those courses to explore majors or minors I might be interested in?

Tip: If you are still exploring career options related to your academic major, spend time this summer talking to people who have careers that interest you.  Check out the online self-exploration resources at UMBC’s  Career Center and don’t forget to stay tuned for updates about our The Major Event happening in October!

Using all of this information, review your class schedule for the fall semester and make sure it still makes sense given the academic year you just completed (i.e.- do you need to repeat a class? Are you enrolled in too many credits?).

Tip: If you have still not registered for the fall semester and need advising assistance, talk to a departmental advisor or contact the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising at oapa@umbc.edu.

Aside from academics, take some time to think about your social and extra-curricular involvement at UMBC:

Did I get involved on or off-campus in activities/events that interest me?

How well did I balance my social and academic life?

What lessons did I learn from getting involved?

Tip: Extra-curriculars can be a great way to not only meet new people but also get club and leadership experience that looks great on a resume! As we prepare for more in-person interaction next semester, make sure you familiarize yourself with UMBC Student Affairs and Campus Life information so you can anticipate any updates for next semester.

Lastly, make sure you spend some time thinking about where you are financially right now:

How did I budget my money during the academic year?

Do I have concerns about paying tuition or funding other aspects of college?

Am I aware of the financial tools and resources available to me as a UMBC student?

Tip: Check out the status of your student account on myUMBC (under the topic Billing & Personal Finances) to be sure everything is in order.  Check in with your Financial Aid Counselor for assistance exploring funding opportunities as well! The Financial Smarts@UMBC  website is also for great information on financing your education, living on a budget, and the concept of credit.

Finally, if you need support this summer, please know that UMBC is still very much up and running! Click here to access the COVID-19 student site for a centralized list of campus contact information and resources.

Again, we congratulate you for all you have accomplished this semester. We hope you use the following months as a time to keep moving forward towards your goals. It is never too late to reassess your plans and set yourself up for success. Never forget that we are here to help you make it happen!

My day-to-day responsibilities include creating and scheduling exams for many clients, providing live troubling for proctors during exams. I also assist in other functional business/technology processes as needed.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

My internship position was listed on the UMBCworks page, and I decided to apply because the job description matched my skill set. I used the Career Center's handbook resume tips and examples to format my resume according to my field of study.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoy that this internship position is entirely remote, so I get to work in the comfort of my home. I also enjoy the daily meeting with team members and the different tasks and projects we get to work on each day. The organization is pretty small, so everyone is kept in the loop.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I make an impact through my work by creating exam formats that will yield the best exam-taking experience for candidates.
Education is Everywhere

<Tagline>Learning Continues After Graduation</Tagline>

Before you know it,
your undergraduate education will come to an end. You’re probably
excited to say good-bye to papers, lab reports, and
exams (unless you plan to attend graduate school)!

Learning does not
have to end when you graduate; your
educational journey could just be getting started.

Lifelong learning can
come in a variety of forms, including, but not limited to:

meeting and engaging
    with new people

traveling

community involvement

reading and keeping up
    to speed on current events

pursuing career
opportunities, certificate programs, and picking up new hobbies!

Below are a few
tips/resources to becoming a lifelong learner:

UMBC Graduate School: If you plan on pursing an advanced degree,
look no further! Visit the Graduate School web
site to learn more about our exciting program offerings!

UMBC Division of Professional Studies: Already have a job lined up but still interested
in continuing your education? UMBC's Division of Professional Studies has
courses, certificates and programs, designed to fit the busy schedule of the
working professional. Check out some of the upcoming online events at
our Main Campus or Shady Grove next month!

UMBC Training Centers: If you are looking to gain a new skill and
need flexible and affordable options, you may want to visit our Training Centers. High quality, flexible
professional education and training opportunities are available
year-round! Some courses are open to all individuals (no application
    needed)!

Remain active: Clubs/organizations are available outside of
college! A simple Google search will direct you to a variety of local
activities where you can participate, take lessons from
aerobics, to sports, to even learning a new language! Meetup.com is an excellent resource for
connecting with people who share similar interests!

Build your brand: Our Career Center is not just
for current students! Alumni can make connections through
various services that the Career Center offers. Seek out professional
development opportunities within your workplace, including conferences,
workshops, mentoring programs, or leadership trainings. Now that you are in a
real-world setting, there will be other skills you will need to learn!

Stay in touch: As your graduating class prepares to travel down
different paths, you will have so much to offer one another as you gain further
knowledge and life experiences. By staying in touch with former classmates, you
may encounter opportunities to collaborate in work or network in a field
different than your own. To start, you can join UMBC’s Chapter of Young Alumni, open to graduates
of the last decade. Membership is free via the UMBC Alumni
Association, which offers chances for networking and fun throughout the year. Also,
participate in the Career Center’s new initiative Retrievers Connect – an “online
platform that provides an opportunity for alumni to connect with each other
support UMBC students, and connect with faculty and staff all in one space to
    support professional and career connections.”

Join our LinkedIn page
to see where over 60,250 UMBC alumni are working!

Life after college
is what you make of it. Keep an eye open to the countless experiences
that are waiting for you outside of UMBC. Your very next lesson may be one
    that carries you through life!

Intern of the Week: Jessica Kweon for Psychology

<Tagline>Check out Jessica's internship with the Esperanza Center!</Tagline>

Name:Jessica Kweon

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Esperanza Center, Catholic Charities in Action

Position Title:Legal Services and Educational Services Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Psychology B.A.

Current Class Level:Senior

Work Term: Spring 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I'm currently interning virtually for this position. Because I intern for two different branches, I have two different supervisors that I meet on different days. The majority of my work pertains to my legal role. I work closely with my supervisor to gain legal knowledge and practice skills lawyers use for cases, including preparing documents, briefs, and legal research. With supervision, I can also contact clients with regards to cases. In addition, I meet weekly with the other lawyers in the branch to learn about their cases in the past week. This experience has been super insightful in better understanding the work that lawyers do, especially in immigration law.

As an Educational Services intern, I work with my supervisor on projects pertaining to the adult ESOL tutoring program. As a volunteer, it's provided me a lot of perspective on how to better evaluate and improve the program for both students and volunteers!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

In December, I applied for the Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change. Having been to the Career Center multiple times in my college career, I already had everything I needed, such as my resume, to apply for the program. In January, I was accepted into the program, which graciously provided funding for any nonprofit internship of my choice for the semester. I worked with Christine Routzahn from the Career Center to find and contact local nonprofit organizations that aligned with the kind of professional experience I was seeking for in my senior year. I've volunteered through the Shriver Center as an ESOL teacher for the Esperanza Center since the summer, and I was aware that they offered a number of other services to immigrant populations in the Baltimore area. After contacting and interviewing with the staff, I was able to land an intern position in two different branches, Legal Services and Educational Services, both of which I am very passionate about.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I love the values, mission, and vision that our organization has in truly serving and supporting the immigrant community. As someone whose parents are immigrants, I know that having access to safe and compassionate services is really important when coming to the United States. I've also loved working with my supervisors. They've both been super fun, encouraging, and helpful throughout this experience!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work, I am helping to improve teaching procedures that will enhance learning for children with developmental disabilities, like Autism-spectrum disorder (ASD). Although there are procedures currently in place to treat children with ASD in Applied Behavior Analysis, much research needs to be done to continue to strengthen ways to teach children using empirical data. Some areas of research are the number of stimuli and order of stimuli concurrently taught within a session.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

In any aspect of my work, I am directly and indirectly impacting an immigrant in need of services, whether legal or educational. This purpose makes the work I do so worthwhile and personal knowing that I am helping someone adjust to and build their life here in the United States.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned. New interns are announced every Monday!

Throughout the course of the pandemic, I have been providing support to the Data & Systems Group in the AWS team in maintaining and operating with on-demand cloud computing to allow high-powered analytic capabilities for structured and unstructured data sets. I also assisted in the proper governance for multimillion-dollar AWS purchases to ensure costs and resources are managed within budget while meeting the needs of the database infrastructure teams.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. You don't need to know everything. I have learned that most employers look for personality, work ethic, and the eagerness to learn. And lastly, to go outside often and ground yourself.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
