Choose Your Own Adventure... I Mean Major!

<Tagline>A closer look at the Individualized Study Program at UMBC</Tagline>

Deciding on an academic major is a big deal! We have so many
options at UMBC, including a unique major for students who are interested in
    carving out their own pathway.

Do you have so many academic interests that it’s difficult
to pick just one? Are you curious how different academic disciplines can
intersect? Do you want the chance to have more “say” in the types of classes
you take? The Indivualized Study Program at UMBC might be just what you’re
    looking for!

We interviewed Carrie Sauter, Assistant Director of the INDS
Program, to bring you more information about this exciting opportunity.

EC: Can you briefly describe the
Individualized Studies program? What are the benefits to a student who selects
    this path?

CS: Individualized Study (INDS) is
a unique path for a highly motivated undergraduate student to design their own
major to meet specific goals. Students in the program merge courses from
several disciplines into one themed degree plan. In addition to our core
courses, we encourage internships and research outside the classroom. A quote
from one of our alums: "My INDS degree has provided me: (1) critical
thinking skills (2) tools to facilitate interprofessional conversations (3)
fostered my understanding of research methods and application to research
projects and (4) developed a sense of curiosity to understand problems from
    multiple perspectives."

EC:
What additional work is involved to officially "declare" INDS.
Can you talk a bit about the proposal writing process?

CS: We encourage anyone at any
stage of their academic career to consider INDS. Obviously we would like to
start advising students as early as possible, even before transferring to UMBC.
Our core curriculum is a minimum of four semesters, and we would be happy to
talk to students about how that can work with their goal graduation date. To
declare INDS, students simply need to meet with an advisor in the program and
obtain a signature on the Declaration of Major form. While in the second course
in our core curriculum, INDS 335 Degree Writing Seminar, students
craft a degree plan, present it to our faculty committee, and secure two degree
mentors. The degree plan consists of not just a list of classes in a timeline,
but a narrative of why this major is best suited for the student, definitions
for particular aspects in the degree, and ways this degree plan connects to
    immediate and long-term goals.

EC:
Besides the fact that you are creating your own degree plan, what do you think
sets the INDS major apart from other majors?

CS: INDS students stand out in any
application process: employers, graduate school admissions, medical school
committees. Our students and graduates say they are able to think across
disciplines, consider other viewpoints, and communicate clearly. We also
require INDS students to complete a capstone project completed in their final
    year.

A
quote from an alum: "In the public health field I am constantly
interacting with professionals from other fields and disciplines such as social
workers, medical doctors, policy makers, entrepreneurs, and a variety of
researchers. As an Individualized Study student, I learned to see the strengths
each different discipline could offer to address a problem and create an
optimal solution no discipline could independently develop. Instead of seeing
divides between my colleagues from different fields, I see connections and ways
to build bridges by avoiding stereotypes of certain fields and communicating
with shared language. This perspective will help me work more effectively with
colleagues from a variety of professions to help create more comprehensive
culturally appropriate health programs as a future physician aiming to promote
    integrative care."

EC
Any notable alumni stories you can share? Any interesting things alumni have
    gone on to do?

CS: INDS students have gone on to
medical school, law school, physical therapy school, doctoral programs, and
employment across diverse fields. We also have several alumni who have started
their own business after graduation. Notable highlights of graduates from the
past eight years: two graduates with fully-funded PhD programs at Harvard
University and University of Manchester (UK); full-tuition merit scholarship to
George Washington University School of Law; Forensic Chemist at Prince George's
County Police Department; software engineer at Northrop Grumman; Biomedical
Engineering PhD at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; professor of
entrepreneurship and business at Howard Community College; Software Developer
    at Booz Allen Hamilton.

The UMBC Career Center is excited to spotlight Baltimore County Government as one of our featured employers. Baltimore County has multiple summer 2020 internship and temporary/seasonal positions posted in UMBCworks. Most of these postings will close on April 30, 2020.

Eric Stewart-Craig, Human Resources Analyst for Baltimore County Government shares his experiences and thoughts about working within the Baltimore County Government.

What positions are Baltimore County Government currently hiring for?

Baltimore County is always hiring for a wide variety of positions with different experience, education, and skill levels. Our positions are posted on our website, and updated weekly. We are currently hiring for Computer Forensics Examiner I, Engineering Associate II (Highway Design), and Social Work Associate. We are also hiring for our summer internship program. In addition to the civilian positions we offer, we also hire for public safety positions such as Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Emergency Communications Technician Trainee, Correctional Officer, and Probationary Firefighter.

If you had to describe Baltimore County Government in three words, what would they be?

Inclusive, Excellence, and Empowerment (Employee)

What is the number one thing you look for in a new team member?

We want individuals that are engaged and have a passion for what they do. This includes having a desire to continue in their professional development, take on leadership roles, and help us build a better Baltimore County.

What qualities do your coworkers possess that make them enjoyable to work with?

We have a diverse group of employees throughout the County that bring a variety of perspectives on both work and life. My coworkers have a wide variety of experiences in different positions that can help provide unique solutions to work questions. My coworkers are also able to offer advice and assistance to any non-work related questions I may have. This type of balance makes Baltimore County an enjoyable place that makes you want to come to work.

What do you want people interested in working within Baltimore County to know about them?

Baltimore County is a leading jurisdiction that is continuing to grow. We are undergoing an exciting transformation that will lead us to be able to continue to be proactive and innovative when addressing the community’s evolving needs.

How do you describe the Baltimore County Government culture? What makes you excited to work there?

Baltimore County’s culture is focused on delivering the highest standards of service to its residents, business, and visitors. We are also focused on using the county’s resources in a way that is effective, efficient, and ethical. As employees, we understand we are here to serve our community, and being part of something bigger than ourselves is a part of what makes it exciting to work here. I enjoy coming to work every day because of the impact I can make, as well as the people I work with, both inside the organization and outside the organization.

Can you tell us about the career development options available within Baltimore County Government? Specifically for entry level employees?

Baltimore County has a wide variety of positions, and therefore has a wide variety of career development options. If you are a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree looking for an organization with room for professional growth, Baltimore County has a career for you. We have 40 agencies and 520 class specifications (types of jobs). With a Bachelor’s Degree, you are eligible for positions such as Human Resources Analyst I, Management Analyst I, and Statistical Analyst. With a Master’s Degree, you are eligible for the positions previously mentioned, as well as other positions including Human Resources Analyst II, Investment Analyst I, and Management Analyst II. These aren’t the only positions you are eligible for, we just have too many to list them all. Most positions in Baltimore County are on a grade. This means that as you gain experience in your current position, over time you become eligible for higher positions in your classification. For example, if you’re a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, you are eligible to be hired as an Engineer I. Once you have two years’ experience as an Engineer I, you are then eligible to be hired as an Engineer II. Positions in Baltimore County typically end at IV. You can then become eligible for senior leadership positions such as Deputy Director of a department. This same career path can be applied to most positions in Baltimore County. Baltimore County is investing in its employees by implementing a succession plan. We are currently in the beginning stages of the succession plan, but this will lead to more opportunities for employees that are eager to move up and become future leaders. The succession plan will include even more employee training than we already offer, stretch job assignments where employees can work part-time in another division to increase their skills in a real work environment, and a mentorship program where employees can learn from senior leaders about their career path and how they developed into their current role.

Why did you originally choose to work for Baltimore County?

I chose to work for Baltimore County because I always wanted to work in Human Resources and work for the government. When the opportunity came and I was able to work for Baltimore County’s Office of Human Resources, I knew it was the perfect combination I was looking for in my career. Before I started with Baltimore County, I worked in operations for a transportation company for four years. It took some time to transition from working for a nationwide Fortune 500Company, to working for the local government. What made the transition easier was the people I work with both in my department and throughout the county. The benefits were also a major upgrade when I left the private sector for the public sector, and one of the reasons I always wanted to work for the government. Baltimore County offers a pension plan, deferred compensation, affordable health insurance, dental, vision, employee assistance program, and educational assistance. As an employee you also receive vacation days, sick days, personal days, and paid holidays.

Do you have any examples or remember a specific time that you loved working with your team?

I can honestly say I enjoy coming to work every day, and a major part of that is the people I work with. In our department specifically, we are always interacting with the public. As a team, we get to present at job fairs, community events, and administer tests for public safety positions. This requires some late nights and weekends where you get to spend more time with your team members. You build a camaraderie with everyone that makes work enjoyable.

If you remember anything specific, can you talk about your interviewing/hiring process when you started at Baltimore County?

I actually started out as a non-merit (part-time) employee. I made a career change and left my past profession where I was moving up the ladder, for a position I was hoping would be a better fit for me. My career change has been everything I was hoping it would be. The reason I like to mention I started as a non-merit employee is that sometimes that can scare some applicants and keep them from applying. I was a non-merit employee, but I worked 34 hours per week, compared to my merit (full-time) co-workers that worked 35 hours per week. The only major difference between a non-merit employee and a merit employee is that merit employees receive six personal days per year, while non-merit employees do not receive any personal days. However, non-merit employees still receive vacation days, sick days, and paid holidays. I applied for the position and within a few weeks I received a phone call from the hiring manager to schedule an interview. My interview was in person with the division chief and another senior employee at their office. They asked me questions that specifically related to what I had done previously in both work and school, and how I would translate that knowledge to the specific position for which I was applying. I received a phone call a couple of weeks after the interview and was offered the position, which I accepted immediately. I have since been promoted and am now a merit employee. It is not uncommon for employees to start out as non-merit and then promote to a merit position.

Why do you hire UMBC students?

We hire UMBC students because we know they graduate with the knowledge and skills that enable them to contribute immediately. It’s a great advantage that we have a nationally recognized University in our own backyard. We believe that the values students learn through their time at UMBC will translate to what we our building at Baltimore County

Featured Employer: Revature

The UMBC Career Center is excited to spotlight Revature. Revature empowers businesses around the globe with best-in-class talent and technologies. Our people work on the most innovative, challenging, and rewarding software development projects for leading Fortune 500 companies, government organizations, and top systems integrators. We offer three distinct advantages that help put our clients—and our people—ahead in the market: a one-of-a-kind talent delivery program, unparalleled expertise, and better control of your talent pipeline. Learn more at https://revature.com/.

Revature will be hosting two virtual information sessions. Be sure to RSVP via the link provided in the post so that you can receive Zoom meeting information:

May 13, 2020 - 12:00 Noon

Revature is currently seeking candidates for the following entry-level positions:

9315748 – Junior Software Developer

9315748 – Software Engineer

9315749 – Technology Consultant

Levi May, a member of Revature’s Mid-Atlantic recruiting team, shares his thoughts about the organization:

If you had to describe Revature in three words, what would they be?

Inclusive. Innovative. Trend-Setting.

What is the number one thing you look for in a new team member?

Team players who are eager to learn in-demand technical skills and comfortable with nationwide relocation.

What do you want people interested in working at Revature to know about the company?

We have a demand-driven business model, which enables us to produce entry-level tech talent who are job ready from day one post-training!

Why did you originally choose to work for Revature?

The Tech Revolution has shaken up the labor market, with many entry-level jobs out there requiring 2-3 years of hard-core technical skills. I saw Revature’s model as extremely attractive, in that it hires associates of ALL MAJORS (regardless of GPA) and is able to equip trainees with the experience needed in just a 10-12 week period. After learning this, I had to apply!

Do you have any examples or remember a specific time that you loved working with your team?

The team works hard and loves laughing! I know I’m making a difference and helping both career beginners and career changers!

If you remember anything specific, can you talk about your interviewing/hiring process when you started at Revature?

Applicants go through a multi-step screen process for general aptitude, technical skills background, and soft skills. Our screening process ultimately determines their training pathway at Revature!

Welcoming Donna Camp Benner to the Career Center Team!

<Tagline>We are so excited to have her on-board as Office Supervisor!</Tagline>

COVID-19 hasn't stopped the Career Center from welcoming Donna Camp Benner, our new Office Supervisor, to the team! We wish that we could be together in Math/Psych 201, but we are fortunate to have her on-board during this crazy time. Feel free to say "hi" virtually (dcamp@umbc.edu) and be sure to stop by and welcome her once we are on-campus! Learn a little bit more about Donna by checking out her profile below.

Tell me a little about
    yourself. Where are you from?

I relocated to Catonsville 20
years ago from a small town north of Pittsburgh called Aliquippa, and yes, I'm
a Steelers fan. My love for community stems from my roots there and
my strong family values, much like the UMBC community that I am growing to
    love!

Where
    did you go to school?

I graduated
from Aliquippa High School, home of many famous graduates there such as
Jesse Steinfeld, Henry Mancini, Mike Ditka, Ty Law and Tony Dorsette, to name a
    few.

What
did you do before coming to the Career Center?

I worked
for Anne Arundel Workforce Development, part of the Workforce Branch of Anne Arundel County Government and MD
Department of Labor. I enjoyed my varied roles over the past 10 years as a
career advisor, training facilitator, business services rep and career center
manager. Every day was a new adventure and I loved being part of getting people
back to work and helping them to advance in their careers.

What
will you be working on at UMBC?

As the
Office Supervisor, I will be providing administrative and budgetary support to
the director and staff members in the Career Center, Math/Psych 201. My duties also include
managing the front office, student staffing/recruiting and training.

What
are you most excited about for your new role?

Besides
getting to be part of the UMBC community, I’m excited to work with such an
amazing and supportive Career Center team, and use my skills and experience to support
both staff and students in achieving their goals.

Do you
    have a secret talent?

I wish
I could say I have a secret talent, but, on a silly note, I accidentally drove
into a presidential motorcade (pre-911), drank champagne out of the Stanley Cup,
    and got kissed by Shamu.

What
was your first job or internship?

My
first job as a teenager was cleaning a small credit union, where I set off the
alarm a time or two. But, my first internship was at a major bank as a teller/office
assistant, which led to a permanent job offer as the secretary to the Vice
    President.

How
are you spending your COVID-19 quarantine?

I’ve
been learning more about UMBC and my role while working virtually. In the past
month, I started my new position, had my wedding reception cancelled, still got
married in a private ceremony (me, my new husband and the pastor), prepared to
sell my house and moved into a new place. At least I can say I’m never bored
and although it has been a little stressful, I feel blessed!
