I’m writing today to let you know of opportunities the Howard County Heritage Program offers for your students to find a meaningful internship while gaining real world experience relevant to their course of study. The Heritage Program has the distinct privilege of sharing and interpreting the rich and assorted histories of Howard County and the surrounding region at various historic sites open to the public. Our interpretive timeline spans the colonial period through the Civil Rights Era so there are many prospects including in the areas of colonial history, Civil War, African American history and women’s studies. Your students will join an enthusiastic group of diverse individuals who devote time to sharing their knowledge of historic events, facts, and the living history of the trades and lifeways that allowed early Howard County inhabitants to thrive.

On May 17, 1968, nine Catholic activists entered a Selective Service office in suburban Catonsville, Maryland, dragged stacks of draft records outside, and set them on fire with homemade napalm. They then prayed and waited to be arrested. Between 1967-1972, there were hundreds of civil disobedience actions against U.S. draft boards and the Dow Chemical Co., resulting in the destruction of hundreds of thousands of 1-A draft files and the orderly process of the U.S. government's ability to wage war in Vietnam. Hit & Stay is the story of the action community and the raids they staged that turned priests, nuns, and college students into fugitives and targets of the FBI.

Byrnes the Baltimore City Historical Society presents an annual Joseph L. Arnold Prize for Outstanding Writing on Baltimore's History, in the amount of $500.
 
Joseph L. Arnold, Professor of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, died in 2004, at the age of sixty-six. He was a vital and enormously important member of the UMBC faculty for some three and a half decades as well as a leading historian of urban and planning history. He also played an active and often leading role with a variety of private and public historical institutions in the Baltimore area and at his death was hailed as the "dean of Baltimore historians."
 
Entries should be unpublished manuscripts between 15 and 45 double-spaced pages in length (including footnotes/endnotes). Entries should be submitted via email as attachments in MS Word or PC convertible format to baltimorehistory@law.umaryland.edu. If illustrations are to be included they should be submitted along with the text in either J-peg or TIF format.
 
There will be a “blind judging” of entries by a panel of historians. Criteria for selection are: significance, originality, quality of research and clarity of presentation. The winner will be announced in Spring  2015. The BCHS reserves the right to not to award the prize. The winning entry will be posted to the BCHS webpage and considered for publication in the Maryland Historical Magazine.

I am writing to keep the ball rolling with our US Chapter of ACHS, which did gain some momentum at the recent ACHS conference at the Australian National University in Canberra (Dec. 2-4). Oral histories will be edited and produced for broadcast on WEAA during the Marc Steiner Show. Steiner and the CEM will work with students to develop interview and production skills as professors from American Studies (AMST), Media and Communication Studies (MCS), and Visual Arts (VART) guide students in place-based cultural and historical examinations of Baltimore neighborhoods.
