This prestigious four-day seminar will be held in Washington, D.C.,from 19–22 May 2014. SICAR trains graduate students from multiple disciplines to maximize their research in archives and focuses on the following areas: • preparing to go to an archive and structuring time once there;• understanding how archival documents come to be written and deposited in archives;• tackling the interpretive challenges posed by archival documents, including issues of cultural differences and foreign languages. In response to my very first “In the Archives”, UMBC staff member Delana Gregg suggested that I write about the history of UMBC’s Free Hour, the hour without scheduled classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That struck me as a strange idea, because the free hour is, at face value, a gap in the schedule; the real story, it seemed to me, was what took place free hour: the club meetings, rehearsals, brainstorming and creative work. When Mike Lewis graduated from Patterson High School in 1978, he rapidly secured job offers at the post office, a General Motors plant and a paint factory, before accepting a position at the steel mill, where his grandfather and uncle had also worked.
