Welcome to the Ancient Studies Council

Salvete, omnes!

Welcome to the fall semester; I hope everyone's school year is off to a magnificent start! The Ancient Studies Council has many great things planned for this semester, and we're excited to share all of that with you. My name is Irene Nolan, and I am the president of the ANCS Council this year. Our vice president is Maegan Crew, our secretary is Matthew Haworth, and our treasurer is Anthony DeFeo.

Involvement Fest was yesterday and we had an awesome turnout. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello! We have a number of upcoming events to look forward to:

The Ancient Studies Pizza Party is Wednesday, Sept. 19th, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in PAHB 441. This is a great opportunity to meet the Ancient Studies faculty, staff, and students, and also to have free pizza.

The ANCS Council Bake Sale is also Wednesday, Sept. 19th, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm in the Commons Breezeway. Feel free to stop by on your way out of the pizza party for desserts and to support the ANCS Council!

The first ANCS Council meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, at 5:30 pm in PAHB 441. At this meeting, we'll discuss future events, hear suggestions, and answer any questions you may have about the Council. Immediately following, we will be hosting our first Symposium.

Symposium was a wonderful suggestion by a student at Involvement Fest for the ANCS Council to have a discussion about mythology, ancient history, and other related topics in a relaxed atmosphere over snacks. Our first discussion topic is yet to be decided but will be announced soon.

Scribe School with Dr. Lane will be on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 4:00 pm in PAHB 229. Dr. Lane will be teaching us an ancient script, and we will be inscribing it onto clay tablets. Materials will be provided.

Please feel free to invite your friends to all of these events! We will have more events scheduled soon. All of our events and updates will be posted here at the Ancient Studies Council group page. We also have a Facebook page (we have the best memes) which can be found by searching for UMBC Ancient Studies Council.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any of the ANCS Council officers at the emails listed below:

TRAVEL TO THE UK WITH THE UMBC ANCIENT STUDIES DEPARTMENT IN MARCH 2019

The UMBC Ancient Studies Department will conduct its 53rd annual study tour in the UK, March 15-23, 2019. The cost of the tour is $3000, and it will include all international and domestic air and land travel, twin-share accommodation for eight nights at three-star hotels, eight buffet breakfasts, three group dinners, one group lunch, and entrance to all archaeological sites, museums, and events on the itinerary. Single rooms are available at an additional $576 per person. ANCS majors and minors, UMBC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community are invited to join us. The trip can be taken as part of a three-credit course taught by Dr. Melissa Bailey Kutner and Prof. Tim Phin in the Winter 2019 term (ANCS 301). Scholarships to help pay for the costs of the trip are available to Ancient Studies majors who enroll in the course; one scholarship is available to pay the costs of the course. Places are limited, so reserve yours today! This is a wonderful opportunity to see archaeological sites and museums in the UK. If you are interested in joining us, please submit your registration form to Domonique Pitts (dpitts@umbc.edu). An initial deposit of $500.00 is due Friday, October 26, 2018.

The tour begins with a three-night stay at Royal National Hotel in Russell Square, followed by one night in Southampton, one night in Bath, and two nights at Premier Inn Quayside in Newcastle, before spending the final night at Royal National in London. The stay in London includes visits to the Museum of London, the Mithraeum, Billingsgate House and Bath, the British Museum, and an evening performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Globe Theatre. We then head for Southampton, visiting Celleva Atrebatum, Avebury Stone Circle, Keillor Museum, and Stonehenge on the way. The following day we travel to Fishbourne Roman Palace and Museum and Maiden Castle before stopping in Bath for the night. The next morning we visit the Roman Baths and Museum before flying from Bristol to Newcastle. From Newcastle, we visit Vindolanda, Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall, and Housesteads. The following day we fly to London to enjoy a free day, leaving London for Baltimore the next day.
