On April 17th at 4 PM in the Library Gallery we welcome Dr. Deborah Thomas, who will present “The Question of Bodily Sovereignty, or, Anthropology as Vulnerable Praxis.” 

Title: The Question of Bodily Sovereignty, or, Anthropology as Vulnerable Praxis


Dr. Thomas will explore powerful questions like:

What can the body reveal about ways of being and knowing that do not fit within Western frameworks? 

How does the body help us understand collective modes of world-building that exist outside of, but still interact with, modern political systems and legalistic notions of sovereignty? 


Anthropologist Deborah Thomas will explore these questions by looking at the practices of Kumina, a Jamaican spiritual and cultural tradition that involves drumming, singing, and dancing. In her presentation, Dr. Thomas will draw from her experience co-organizing a Kumina festival over the past five years to show how the body carries both the legacies of colonialism and the tools to resist and reshape them.

Hello everyone, 

Hope spring break was restful and the transition back into classes is going well. 

Our meeting this Friday (2-3PM in Public Policy 203) is going to be laid back as we are watching the documentary "Unknown: Cave of Bones” on Netflix. It talks about the research paleoanthropologists did on discovering a new human ancestor and becomes a metaphysical experience about what it means to be human. We will have small snacks to accompany the film.

Anthropology Club will be having its first meeting of the semester Friday 28th from 2:00-3:00PM in Public Policy 203. This time and location biweekly will be our official meeting days this spring.


For our first meeting, we plan to have a presentation introducing the club’s officers, what Anthropology Club is all about, and briefly what anthropology is. We will then close out with a fun activity about culture!

Hello everyone!
This Saturday the 23rd, Anthropology Club and Ancient Studies Club are taking a field trip to the Walters museum in Baltimore! If you did not sign up but would like to go please email me directly. There is limited space on the bus, but we still have room for a few more!
Below is the itinerary, what to bring with you, where on campus to meet, and some additional important information to know about the trip.

Things to know about the trip:

  1. Please bring your UMBC ID with you!

  2. You may bring a small backpack with you, but you will need to wear it on the front while inside the gallery. You cannot leave items on the bus since it may not be the same bus when heading back to campus.

  3. The Walters does not allow outside food, drink, or gum

    1. If you have any medical accommodations (food or otherwise), please contact accessibility@thewalters.org

  4. You are welcome to bring your own money for lunch/snacks at the Walters cafe or for goodies at the gift shop.

  5. Photography is encouraged, but only with flash off. You cannot bring tripods.


The itinerary:

  • 11:00 am  –The bus will arrive outside the Performing Arts and Humanities building (PAHB), next to the arches (The Forum). 

  • 11:15 am  – The bus departs to the museum (do not be late!)

  • ~11:40 am  – Arrival at the museum

  • 11:45am - 2:15pm  – Enjoy your time at the museum! You may ask Professor Phin any questions about Ancient Greek artifacts, history, or art!

  • 2:15 pm  – Loading back on the bus to depart.

  • 2:30 pm  – The bus departs from the museum (do not be late!)

  • 3:00 pm  – arrival back at campus next to PAHB.


Directions:

The bus will park on the road between PAHB and lot 8 for both pick up and drop off. If you see orange arches, you’re in the right place!

For this weeks meeting, our original plan was to discuss internship opportunities and have a career day of sorts. However, in light of recent events, myself and the other officers have decided to instead discuss the cultural impacts of last weeks presidential election. Most importantly, we want to give everyone a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings about what has taken place. We know many of us have strong feelings about the results, so we want to provide community for anyone who needs it.

Monday, November 11th, we will be meeting 12-1pm in Public Policy room 203.

We hope to have an additional meeting next Monday the 18th to make up for our change in plans. I will send out information for that soon.
