Wal-Mart workers prepare for strike on Black Friday
Walk-outs planned in multiple cities
This time it seems that it may be different. What started off as a warehouse workers' walkout in one city has spread to about 11 others as well. The protests initially revolved around wages, work hours and Wal-Mart breaking labor laws related to them. However, having employees work on Thanksgiving evening in order to open earlier seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
They are backed by various groups, but however you may feel about the groups themselves, I think we can all agree that the employees shouldn't have to work on a national holiday just to handle idiots who wait outside in the cold and trample all over each other when they enter.
Personally, Black Friday has become such a ridiculous tradition here that I think it is borderline lunacy. First off, why wait in line for on sale items that you may or may not want in the first place? Second, why not just go online? Third, I think it is ironic that anyone would bother doing this and risking their lives for buying random stuff after the holiday dedicated to being thankful for what we have.
Personally, I fully support this strike. I don't think other employees should have to give up time with their families and their holiday as a whole in order to cater to these people. How selfish is that to expect them to do this?
I do remember there are ways to help support this, but I do not remember where to find them off the top of my head. Once I do, I will post them. If someone else finds them please post it here. I believe we should help them out.
