EVENT: The Wildly Colorful Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing
A Lecture by Dr. Alfreda Murck, Wednesday, March 7th 4 p.m.

Dr.
Alfreda Murck, historian of Chinese visual culture, will present a
lecture on the work of Lo Ch'ing, the Poet-Painter. Her lecture seeks to
place the artist in the context of the millennia-long tradition of
Chinese Landscape Painting and coincides with the CADVC's current
exhibition,
The Poet's Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing.
Formerly
the Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York (1978 to 1991), Dr. Murck is the author of Poetry and Painting in Song China: The Subtle Art of Dissent (Harvard,
2000). She has published numerous articles in English and Chinese on
China's visual arts and poetry, and co-curated the exhibition Mao's Golden Mangoes and the Cultural Revolution at The Museum Reitburg.
In 2015, for the book William Kentridge: Notes towards a Model Opera,
and exhibition at the Ullen's Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing,
she wrote "Kentridge and Chinese Painting". For the San Francisco Asian
Art Museum's 2016 exhibition catalogue Emperor's Treasures: Chinese Art from the National Palace Museum, Taipei, she contributed an essay "A Millennium of Imperial Collecting and Patronage".
Dr.
Murck received her Ph.D in Chinese Art and Archeology from Princeton
University. From 1991 to 2013, She lived in Taiwan and China. In
Beijing, she was a consultant to the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City
and a researcher at their Painting and Calligraphy Research Center.
From 2000 to 2013, Dr, Murck worked with The Henry Luce Foundation on a
series of workshops supporting the development of western art history as
a discipline in China.

Our annual competition for Huayu Scholarships
to study Mandarin in Taiwan this summer is open.
The Asian
Studies program is allowed by TECRO (Taiwan Economic and Cultural
Representatives Office) to nominate two students for scholarships
to study for eight weeks in Taiwan this summer, at government-approved
language institutes or universities. This is the seventh year for us. All
of our nominated students have received scholarships
in the past. This is an excellent way to accelerate your study of
Mandarin: most students will complete an entire year's language study in
eight weeks and jump a full level when they return to UMBC.

Due
to both the level of interest in the 70th Japan-America Student
Conference (JASC) and the Executive Committee's desire to assemble a
highly qualified and diverse delegation, JASC has decided to extend the application deadline for the 70th JASC to March 18, 2018, with applications being accepted on a rolling basis.
By extending the deadline, we hope to both accommodate applicants who need more time to consider JASC and accept new candidates.
About the 70th Japan America Student Conference
The 70th JASC will take place from August 3-27th, 2018
in four cities throughout the United States: Madison, WI; Lexington,
VA; Washington D.C.; and Portland, OR. Students from all fields of study
are welcome to apply. No background in Japanese language or Asian
Studies is required.
Initiated
in 1934, the history of JASC spans more than 80 years. Throughout these
decades, many delegates who graduated from the program secured
distinguished places in politics and business. Among these include
former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Japanese Prime Minister
Kiichi Miyazawa, and President of the Nissan Corporation Yutaka
Katayama.
Students who join this year's group of 72 competitively-selected delegates from Japan and the U.S. will:

delve into a variety of critical topics such as technology, religion, and mental health;

hear directly from established leaders and attend a plethora of educational field trips across the U.S., and

Retriever Essentials
Food for UMBC Students Facing Food Insufficiency
UMBC now has the Retriever Essentials Program, which provides free bags of non-perishable foods for students facing food insufficiency. Visit retrieveressentials.umbc.edu for locations where you can donate non-perishable food on campus and locations where you can pick up a free bag of non-perishable food.
Save A Swipe Program
Have extra meals on your red card that you aren’t able to use?
Students on a meal plan can now “save a swipe” to donate up to one meal a
week to a shared pool. Those meals will be distributed to students in
need through Counseling Services to be used in True Grit’s. 225 Block
meal plans will have 16 meals deducted when you sign up. Recurring meals
per week (Flexible 10, 14, Terrific 12, Savvy 16) will have one meal
deducted each week. Ultimate Meal Plan holders will be donating
their Friday lunch meal, students on the Ultimate will not be able to
use a meal from 11:00 am - 4:00pm on Friday. Ultimate plan holders can
still use their flex, retriever dollars or food funds. These meals are
non-revocable once submitted. You may sign up during the beginning of
the semester until the drop/add date (February 9th for Spring 2018).

Scholarships Available to Study Intensive Chinese or
Japanese at Washington University in St. Louis this Summer
With the ALLEX
Foundation
The
WUSTL-ALLEX Intensive Chinese and Japanese Institute will offer
intensive beginning level classes in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese at
Washington University in St. Louis for seven weeks this summer. Each
class meets for 2 hours per day, 5 days a week for 7 weeks. The course
is intensive and requires 3-5 hours of mandatory self-managed study per
day.
This program is designed to train students
to speak and listen to Chinese or Japanese, and to introduce students
to reading and writing the language. At the end of the course students
will be expected to perform in all four skills—speaking, listening,
reading and writing—at a basic level of proficiency.
Students
will not only learn to speak the language; they will also develop an
understanding of Chinese or Japanese interpersonal behavior. The
ultimate goal is to teach students not just to speak Chinese or
Japanese, but to function successfully in Chinese or Japanese culture—to
present yourself as an intelligent person in the culture using the
language.
Students will learn to speak and perform correctly in a variety of social situations.
