EAJS-L: Funded MA or PhD study (premodern Japan)
at Kyushu University
Below is information about a funding opportunity for MA and PhD
students interested in premodern Japan.
We are currently inviting applications for one fully funded opportunity to
pursue an MA or PhD degree at the International Master’s Program /
Doctorate in Japanese Humanities, Kyushu University from October, 2018.
Funding includes one return flight from the applicant’s country of
residence, the enrollment and tuition fees for a two-year MA degree or
three-year PhD degree, and a monthly stipend of ca. 140,000 yen. For an MA
candidate: Upon successful completion of the MA degree, funding may be
extended to complete the PhD degree.
Applicants should be foreign nationals born after April 1982.
Interested students should send a curriculum vitae, a research proposal
(for details see p. 11, “academic essay,” of the attached program
brochure), and copies of recent academic transcripts to
kokusai@lit.kyushu-u.ac.jp by November 15, 2017. Additional documents such as letters of recommendation may be requested from short-listed applicants.
The new brochure will be available in December (http://www2.lit.kyushu-u.ac.
jp/en/impjh/). Program details for the 2018–19 academic year will not
change drastically other than the addition of three new colleagues and
courses in their respective fields:
Ashton Lazarus (from September 2017), medieval literature
Anton Schweizer (from February 2018), art and architectural history
Caleb Carter (from March 2018), religious studies
They join current faculty members Ellen Van Goethem, history (on leave
April 2018–March 2019), and Cynthea J. Bogel, art history.

Spring 2018 Advising!
Appointments start 10/23, so sign up early!
Hi Everyone,I know you are all anxious to sign up for your spring classes, so I am happy to announce that we are going to send out the link for sign-ups today! We are starting appointments on Monday, Oct. 23rd, which leaves plenty of time even for those who can register on 11/1.
But here are a couple items of note. All junior and senior Majors MUST sign up for an appointment with me (Prof. Oakes), and if I need to open more slots I can certainly do so. For all other Majors (and Minors), you can either sign up with me or James Hamilton, who is an awesome CAHSS academic adviser.

Greetings from Dr. Julie Oakes, Interim Dir., Asian Studies
Happy Fall, Asian Studies students!
Before it gets too
much further into the semester, I wanted to formally welcome you (or welcome
you back) to campus and to the Asian Studies Program. For those of you who I have not yet had the
pleasure of meeting, I am happy to introduce myself, Dr. Julie Oakes, as the
Interim Director of the Asian Studies Program for the 2017-2018 year.
I have been at UMBC since 2007, teaching for both the Asian
Studies Program and the History Department.
While my specialty is modern Japanese history, I have taught a variety
of classes here such as East Asian Civilizations, Women and Gender in East
Asia, and Art and Power in Japan. In
addition to continuing my work in the classroom, I will also be brainstorming
with Mrs. Rosenthal and the Asian Studies Council of Majors (ASCOM) to bring you
some great events this year!
As Interim Director, it is also my honor to thank our
outgoing Founding Director, Dr. Constantine Vaporis, for his tireless efforts on
behalf of the Asian Studies Program.
Just to give a sense as to how the program has thrived under Dr. Vaporis’
leadership, in 2011 (the first year of the Asian Studies Program) we had two majors
and one minor; today we have fifty-nine majors, twenty minors, and two students
pursuing certificates! It is impossible
in such a brief space to enumerate all that Dr. Vaporis has done in the past
decade (or more!) to make this program a reality. On behalf of the students
and faculty associated with the Asian Studies Program, thank you Dr. Vaporis for giving us
a home. You will be missed!
