B-Ethical to return in the fall

<Tagline>... but we need YOUR help.</Tagline>

Last year, as the new president of the Biology Council of Majors, I invited professors and graduate students to debate on whether parents should be able to choose the sex of their child and the legality of human cloning. But I realized how much effort it took to put together these events. Suffice to say, it was not a one-man job.

So this year, I put together a committee within BioCOM to get other interested students to join the army of hosting debates, which included Drew Dinsmore, Beatriz Guintu, Odilia Sendze, Sara Kifle, and Julie Norton, as well as some members from Philosophers Anonymous such as Xixi Chen and Khaled Elgendy. They helped me recruit debaters, advertise, and grow B-Ethical to do more: we had judges! We had cameras! We had pizza! We had prizes! The past year of debates have been extraordinary, crossing disciplines from computer science to political science, touching topics from animal testing to stem cell research, and it couldn't have been done without the help of every committee member.

As I graduate this May, I will pass the torch onto Sara Kifle, who is taking on the immense position of being the Bioethics Debates Committee chair. I know Sara will do an amazing job, but for her to be successful next year, she is going to need an army of students passionate about continuing to bring these debates to UMBC. If you are interested in joining this committee, please email Sara at skifle1@umbc.edu in order to get information about next year's meetings and debate planning.

Brain-Computer Interfaces, Ethical?

The field of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) research
has led to the engineering of a device system that allows you to convert your
thoughts into action by using your brain’s neural activity: think controlling a
robotic arm via electrodes that are placed on a brain that controls the arm
with its thoughts. This revolutionary field in neuroscience has given hope to
those who are severely disabled including but not limited to those who suffer
from blindness, paralysis, and other debilitative physical disabilities. Hence,
computer-brain interface technology has the potential and power to do
    incredible good.

Some note, however, the importance of recognizing the
possibility for ethical wrongdoing. One such ethical question surrounding this
field is the possibility for social stratification as a result of barriers such
as cost. If brain enhancement does become effective and ubiquitous, there is
the possibility that pressure to enhance one’s brain in order to keep up with
rising competition, might leave some unable to access this enhancement because
of financial barriers. Hence, this will not only widen the gap in society
between the rich and the poor, but become dangerous, creating a social strata
in which an intellectual elite armed with thought-controlled weapons would
government the people. One could think of an army with capabilities such as
night vision eyes, fingers that can fire bullets, humans made immortal by
copying their genetic material into more resilient hardware, these endless
possibilities ascend into the world of sci-fi as they are scary.

So what do YOU think? Is computer-brain interface ethical?
Should we be concerned with social stratification in looking at the future of
computer-brain interface? Should research in this field be limited in order to
prevent it from becoming a tool used to propel us into a dystopian-society?
    Weigh in below!

GMO Seminar Recap

Thanks to all who came to talk about GMOs at the seminar with Drs. Allen and Wagner. We had a small, cozy discussion where both student and faculty brought up their concerns about GMOs, the exaggeration of GMO concerns in the media, what policies (like labeling or classifying subgroups of GMOs differently) should be enacted, how corporations are influencing policy and science, and why scientists should learn to better communicate science to the public. The overall consensus in the group appeared to be that there is no clear cut answer: some usage of GMO seem perfectly fine and produce wonderful success stories, while others are more questionable in terms of both health and ethics. We agreed that GMOs should be considered on a case-by-case basis.

As the seminar began, we watched the below two videos to initiate our conversation. Should anyone have missed the seminar or would like to rewatch the videos, please take a look:

How Are GMOs Created by GMO Answers (6 min)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G-yUuiqIZ0

Feel free to make comments about the seminar or about GMOs at large in the comments. Thanks again to Dr. Wagner, Dr. Allen for giving us expert opinions, BioCOM and the biology department for supporting our events, and to the students for participating (and best of luck on all your midterms!).
