Position: Quality Control Analyst - Biology

Purpose of Position

The Quality Control Specialist is responsible for performing assays and reviewing data from the analysis of samples to support Product Operations and for verifying that products meet specification for release and/or stability.  This position will also be responsible for transferring assays from R&D to QC for new product biology assays.

Responsibilities and Duties

·  Perform biological quality control and/or stability analysis of samples obtained from Product Operations as specified by approved SOPs and/or Methods.  Testing includes, but is not limited to, trypan blue cell counts, enzyme characterization incubations, protein analysis, MTT, PCR, cell confluence and plateability.

·  Write/Revise SOPs and/or Test Methods as applicable.

·  Ensure all analytical laboratory documents are completed within specified timelines.

·  Maintain accurate and concise documentation of testing conducted and resulting data.  Review data obtained for compliance to specifications and report abnormalities.

·  Work with manager to conduct laboratory investigations related to product testing.

·   Prepare release documentation (Product Data Sheets/Certificates of Analysis) as required.

·  Maintain supply levels for performance of assigned duties.

·  Maintain instrumentation and other laboratory equipment according to maintenance schedules and departmental procedures. 

·  Apply good laboratory practices as appropriate and participate in problem solving as required.

·  Accurately maintain appropriate quality control files and databases. 

·  Maintain orderly, clean and safe workplace.

Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements

·  Bachelor degree in Biology or related scientific field with 1-2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience with laboratory procedures, including but not limited to: serial dilutions, aseptic transfers, cell incubation/counting, plate reading and microscopy.

·  Cell culture, tissue culture or molecular biology laboratory experience preferred.

·  Accurate pipetting skills essential.

·  Experience working with radioactive materials or laboratory samples a plus.

·  Must be organized, show attention to detail and demonstrate good documentation practices. 

·  Must have mathematical aptitude for performing data calculations.  Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Excel, Access and Word programs.

·  Good problem solving skills.

Four Saudi students and one Emirati student were able to complete successfully the 2014 Global Externship Program to give international students exposure to career fields in cyber, program management and computer engineering at Northrop Grumman Corporation and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The five students were Badreya Al Marzouqi, a chemical engineering major at Drexel University; Jamela M. Alsheri, a polymer science and engineering major from Case Western Reserve University; Ashwag Alasmari, information systems major from UMBC; Hasan Dabour, an electrical engineering graduate from Northeastern University; and Wael Badeghaish, a materials science and engineering major from Catholic University of America.

"The externship program, which was for Saudi Arabian and Emiratis students studying in US universities, supports our commitment to identify and develop talent in cyber and other technical disciplines in those countries," said Walid Abukhaled, chief executive Saudi Arabia, Northrop Grumman.

The students worked with three Baltimore-based startup companies at the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park:

• RedShred, which takes complex business documents, like grants and request for proposals, quickly extracts the most important information and allows efficient reviews without manual intervention.

• Blue Wave Semiconductors, which develops advanced thin film and nanomaterials and tools, and nanotechnology-based electronic and photonic devices.

• RELI Group, which works in health care information technology and population health supporting federal, commercial and nonprofit organizations.

During the eight-week course students also received leadership training in other business skills such as English technical writing and professional communications. This externship is one of many Northrop Grumman similar programs across the United States.

"It has been a remarkable experience to be part of the Northrop Grumman-UMBC Global Externship Program," said Al Marzouqi. "We are at the stage where we cannot solve an issue by only being engineers. Therefore, diversifying our knowledge and communicating with experts from various nations across the globe helps us better understand how cultural differences impact running a business."

"The externship program has been valuable and unique," said Dabour. "It expanded our knowledge, gave me an idea of what is a good fit for me in the work environment, and taught many significant skills such as the training from writing workshops. The experience made us aware of our strengths and provided the opportunity to network with professionals and make new friends. Working for startup companies also brought my attention to the basics of how to start my own company."

The MIPS program helps companies accelerate various phases of technology commercialization. To do this, MIPS funds collaborative R&D between Maryland companies and faculty in the University of Maryland system.

Since Potomac's move to the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park we've had the privilege to work with UMBC faculty, including Dr. Tony Farquhar, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In accordance with the MIPS goals, Dr. Farquhar will conduct research with Potomac's R&D staff to deliver a major scale-up of current rapid prototyping processes to fast, efficient, and consequently, economical production methods.

For the past 18 months, Potomac has worked with researchers from academia and industry to develop an innovative manufacturing process for rapid prototyping novel microfluidic devices that have application in the biotech and medical device industries. Response to how quickly we can deliver rapid prototypes of custom microfluidic designs has been so strong we've quickly seen unexpectedly high demand for parts in production numbers.

We fabricate the new 3D microfluidic devices by utilizing a complex integration of laser micromachining, micro-hole drilling, high precision hot embossing, and thermal bonding to create small patterns of holes and channels in materials such as PMMA, COC, polystyrene, and polyimide. In some cases, sensors, feed-through paths, ports, and/or surface mount electronics may even be incorporated into the finished product. The initial study will establish a baseline capability for running the microfluidic devices in three different materials. From there, work will emphasize increasing run rate, which will be compared in each substrate.

MIPS is particularly interested in funding production-oriented R&D since projects such as Potomac's has the potential to translate to more jobs for the state of Maryland. In addition, creating new devices that contribute to healthcare on a mass scale is what drives Potomac's passion for the project.
