The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship

 Application Deadline:  Friday, April 14, 2017

• be in good academic standing;
• provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that
• describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward     completion; and,
• verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;
• provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;
• submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and
  submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.

Altered State: Painting Myanmar in a Time of Transition presents paintings by 36 contemporary artists from Myanmar, the Southeast Asian nation formerly known as Burma. Created following the transition period of 2011, when a military-backed civilian government replaced oppressive rule by military junta and the country once famous for its seclusion re-entered the world stage, the paintings illustrate current artistic practice in Myanmar and present a series of creative viewpoints on a rapidly changing society.

Paintings included in Altered State: Painting Myanmar in a Time of Transition are from the collection of contemporary Myanmar paintings of Ian Holliday, the Vice President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at the University of Hong Kong. Presentation of the exhibition at UMBC is supported in part by an arts program grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support comes from the Friends of the Library & Gallery, the Libby Kuhn Endowment, and individual contributions.

About Dr. Iyelli Ichile Ph.D.

Iyelli Ichile currently serves as the

Post-doctoral Fellow in African American

History at the Reginal F. Lewis Museum

& Department of Africana Studies at the

University of Maryland Baltimore County.

She has a Ph.D. in African Diaspora

History from Howard University, and a

Master’s in African American Studies

from Columbia University.

The slave narratives from the Federal Writers’

Project 1936-1938 offer a rich body of material for

historical research. Visiting scholar and fellow

Dr.Ichile will examine how to use the WPA slave narratives

to uncover African American cultural traditions

and genealogy information on enslaved families.

This annual spring lecture is co-sponsored with the

Baltimore Chapter of the Afro-American Historical

and Genealogical Society (BAAHGS).
