Title: “The Hardest Part was Writing the Songs, but the Easiest Part was Motivation”: Music-Centered Pedagogy in the College Composition Classroom
This qualitative teacher-researcher study examines the benefits of providing students in a first-year English composition course opportunities to use music of their own choosing in two major ways: 1) as the inspiration for and subject of alphabetic texts, and 2) as a major element of multimodal compositions. Through the presentation and discussion of classroom artifacts, student reflections, and field notes, I demonstrate that encouraging students to use music in composing assignments helped instill in them a sense of motivation and confidence that not only translated into a greater sense of self- efficacy in relation to classroom assignments, but also resulted in students’ increased desire to engage in self-sponsored composing activities. In addition to exploring the positive effects the integration of music into a composition class had on students’ motivation, I reveal how music-centered lesson plans and assignments can be used to help students consider how texts are assembled and organized, and enable them to identify and apply rhetorical terms and concepts. Additionally, urging students to use or create music as part of multimodal compositions can lead to collaborative composing experiences, opportunities for students to experiment with new modes of composing, chances for students to focus more on global composing concerns than on sentence-level ones, and occasions for students to both pose and solve complex rhetorical problems in creative ways. Though I do not argue that incorporating music into a composition course is the best or only way to teach composition, I do suggest that instructors consider the potential benefits incorporating music into composition pedagogy can offer.

Dr. Viviana MacManus Awarded Career Enhancement Fellowship
Dr. Viviana MacManus, Assistant Professor of Gender and Women's Studies, has been awarded an exciting fellowship opportunity funded by The Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (WW).
The Career Enhancement Fellowships for Junior Faculty aims to increase the presence of minority Junior
Faculty (African Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, Native Americans and
Native Alaskans), and other junior faculty members committed to eradicating racial disparities, and
breaking down stereotypes and promoting cross-racial understanding in core fields in the arts and
sciences. The objective of the fellowship program is to aid the scholarly research and intellectual growth
of junior faculty (men and women) and improve their chances for moving successfully towards tenure by
offering support for twelve months of research and writing.
MacManus will spend her fellowship year working on her book manuscript. GWST and UMBC are excited to see the results of her research, and we applaud her achievement!

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The Director of Adult English Language Education (AELE) serves as the Project Director for the English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) Project, and also is responsible for strengthening existing and developing new adult English language education programs and activities as an integral part of CAL's global mission and development plan. The Director provides overall leadership for CAL's work in the education of adults who are non-native speakers of English, including those in postsecondary education, adult basic education, workplace training, and career and technical education programs in the United States. The Director pursues contracts and services with state and federal agencies, as well as initiating projects that build on and expand CAL's existing strengths, in order to increase CAL's involvement and visibility in the adult education arena.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the effort to strengthen and expand the work of CAL's Adult English Language Education area in cooperation with CAL’s senior leadership. These activities include business development, identifying funders, building and maintaining strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders, and developing proposal strategies with associated staffing.
- Monitor external and internal environment for development of new market segments.
- Develop marketing campaigns in coordination with CAL’s Communications Office for services offered.
- Work collaboratively across the organization to expand the organization's portfolio of contracts, grants, expertise, experience, and reputation.
- Lead/direct the scope and execution of the EHLS project.
- Plan and manage the financial performance of the AELE program area contracts, grants, and allocated overhead.
- Review and approve quarterly financial and activity reports to ensure that expenses are consistent with the annual budget and the programmatic activities.

Dr. Charles Cange, visiting
lecturer in Health Administration and Policy Program (HAPP), Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University
of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), is a member and research consultant for W.
Baltimore Community Commission on Police Misconduct. Findings were released in a reported
entitled Over-Policed, Yet Underserved: The People’s Findings
Regarding Police Misconduct in West Baltimore and were reported at

Since then, the report

A dancing and delicate ecosystem for Light City Baltimore
For Light City Baltimore festival, Visual Arts professors Kelley Bell and Corrie Parks are creating a large-scale projection mapping of aquatic species unique to the Chesapeake Bay, titled “Projected Aquaculture.” The inaugural Light City Baltimore features a 1.5 mile BGE Light Art Walk with 50 attractions from March 28-April 3, 2016.

Open Circle Read & Response: Fallon
National Poetry Month is on its way and the poets of the English Department are coming out in force. Michael Fallon, a Senior Lecturer and esteemed poet, will be reading his work in a one of a kind experience with music and art at the inaugural event for Open Circle Read & Response at The Creative Alliance. The event will be hosted on April 20, 2016 at 7:30 PM at 3134 Eastern Avenue in Baltimore, MD 21224. Please join him for this exciting event. Participants include:

Michael Fallon has taught creative writing, literature, and composition at UMBC since 1985. Fallon has edited the literary magazines Puerto del Sol (1980-81) and the Maryland Poetry Review (1984-91) of which he was founding editor. Poems have appeared in the American Scholar, the Antietam Review, Sin Fronteras, the Oyez Review, and many other literary magazines, CDs, anthologies, and broadcasts on WYPR’s The Signal and other public radio programs. Essays, reviews, and articles have appeared in the Maryland English Journal, Lite Magazine, the Loch Raven Review, and other magazines. He is the author of three collections of poetry: A History of the Color Black, published by Dolphin-Moon Press in 1991; Since You Have No Body, winner of the Plan B Press Poetry Chapbook Competition and published in 2011; and The Great Before and After, published by BrickHouse Books in 2011. His book of poems, House of Forgotten Names, was accepted by Salmon Press or Ireland and will be published in 2017.
Lia Purpura’s new collection of poems, It Shouldn’t Have Been Beautiful (Penguin/Viking), was published in October 2015. She is the author of three previous collections of poems (King Baby,Stone Sky Lifting, and The Brighter the Veil); three collections of essays (Rough Likeness, On Looking, and Increase), and one collection of translations (Poems of Grzegorz Musial: Berliner Tagebuch and Taste of Ash). A Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award (for On Looking), she has is the Writer-in-Residence at UMBC and has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NEA Fellowship, a Fulbright Foundation Fellowship (Translation, Warsaw, Poland), three Pushcart Prizes, a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, and multiple residencies and fellowships at the MacDowell Colony.
Tanya Olson lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, and is a lecturer in English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her first book, Boyishly, was published by YesYes Books in 2013 and was awarded a 2014 American Book Award. She has also won the Discovery/Boston Review prize and was named a Lambda Emerging Writers Fellow by the Lambda Literary Foundation. Her poem "54 Prince" was included in The Best American Poetry 2015.
