Conference: Race, Racism and Baltimore’s Future A Focus on Structural and Institutional Racism

The Fifth Social Determinants of Health Symposium will consider how racism embedded in our criminal justice, healthcare and education systems affect people of color in Baltimore every day, with an impact that spans generations. Race, Racism and Baltimore’s Future: A Focus on Structural and Institutional Racism will bring together experts from Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, and cities across the country.  Along with local community leaders, they will explore new approaches to understanding these forms of racism and ways to address them through collaborative efforts.

Congratulations are in order for many of UMBC's WISE Women for Spring 2016: 

  1. Marie desJardins (Associate Dean, COEIT and CSEE) will receive the Computing Research Association-Education (CRA-E) Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award during the annual Computing Research Association banquet.
  2.  Helena Mentis (IS) has just received an NSF Career Award for her work on advancements in telemedicine.
  3.  Penny Rheingans, (Director of CWIT and Professor of CSEE)  has just won elections to the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association for a 3-year term starting this summer! 
  4.  Gymama Slaughter (CSEE) gave a TEDxBaltimore talk on her work to develop battery-free live saving medical technologies. 
  5. Anne Spence (ME)  received the Engineering and Technology Education Advocacy Award by the Technology and Engineering Association of Maryland (TEEAM) and is receiving one of the 2016 Board of Regents Awards for Public Service!
  6. Liang Zhu (ME) was just elected as a fellow to the American Society of Mechanical Engineering

Dresher Center Graduate Student Research Fellowships
Applications Due: March 15, 2016
The Dresher Center offers two residential Graduate Student Fellowships that are open to all UMBC doctoral and master’s level students working on humanities-related research projects culminating in a dissertation or master’s thesis. Fellowships will be awarded for the fall 2016 semester.
