Georgia State University has faculty lines open for THREE scholars with established external funding and research in adult literacy. Faculty members will be hired at the rank of professor or associate professor (possibility with tenure on appointment). Applicants are expected to have strong records of scholarship, funded research, excellence in teaching, and service in the broadly defined area of adult literacy. These areas include but are not limited to health literacy, family literacy, workplace literacy, numeracy skills, and/or the economic impact of low adult literacy. The new faculty members will add depth and breadth to the currently-funded IES Center for the Study of Adult Literacy (csal.gsu.edu) and the newly developing College of Education's Adult Literacy Research Center.

Appointments are anticipated to begin Fall 2015.

Qualifications: A doctorate in relevant areas, such as health communication, public health, economics, family studies, educational psychology, language, and/or literacy is required. Upon hire, faculty members will be expected to conduct a successful, externally-funded research program that includes peer-reviewed publications in the area of adult literacy. Tenure can be considered in the College of Education, School of Public Health, or the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies in an appropriate department.

As you know, our 21st Century global society has become increasingly diverse. Many of our students, despite being open to that diversity, still need to increase their cultural competencies - the skills and awareness related to communication and interaction across all social identities.  

Student Life's Mosaic Center staff are creating a new Mosaic Center Diversity Presenters group to help develop this important life and interaction skill set within our students. This group, an outgrowth of our former Diversity Education Intern program, is the next evolution in our diversity and social justice education efforts. To prepare to launch this new initiative, this fall we are offering diversity "train the trainer" sessions to students, faculty and staff interested in serving as diversity and social justice education presenters.  Our first 3 hour training for UMBC staff and faculty (and selected students) will be:

The Sociology Department will offer an exciting special topics course in Spring 2015. The course is part of the Breaking Ground project on campus and will offer the opportunity to interact with local communities regarding access to healthy food. 

This course focuses on the “practical side” of sociology and applies sociological insights and methods to understanding local social issues and to assess programs intended to alleviate them. Students in this course will examine social issues affecting local residents through a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project. This semester students will research local urban agriculture projects addressing food deserts, access to healthy food, food security, and environmental problems. This research targets the intersection of local social inequalities, public health issues, and social change. Students will collect data through various methods in research teams, volunteer, document community needs, develop action plans, and make recommendations for change. The ultimate products will be a research report and community presentation.
