This summer, the University of Southern California's Institute for Multimedia Literacy will be offering its online course Teaching with Digital Media. This intensive 5 week course provides a hands-on experience for K-12 teachers to learn free and accessible digital tools for teaching and learning.

Today’s students inhabit a visual, networked culture. They connect and communicate with their peers - and the public - through digital media. Many assume that these “digital natives”are fully literate with regard to media; however, we believe that students need guidance, support and inspiration to realize their full academic potential with digital media. Teaching with Digital Media Online Summer Course offers K-12 educators an opportunity to investigate how to provide that guidance, and to explore the ways in which media can be used to enrich teaching and learning, building on the Common Core Standards which focuses on research and writing skills with both print and non-print texts. This course is designed to help teachers stimulate and motivate students by integrating digital media into their classrooms, using whatever tools are available.

Last week, Patricia La Noue officially handed over leadership of the INDS program to incoming director Stephen Freeland.

Stephen comes to us from Hawaii where he managed an interdisciplinary  team of scientists who together comprised one of the 14 nodes of the NASA Astrobiology Institute (https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/nai/). In his personal research, Stephen is an evolutionary biologist, interested in the origins of fundamental biochemistry. Over time, his research questions have grown beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries - for example, his most recent research publication reports a mineral in Martian meteorites that might help scientists understand the origin of life on Earth! (http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0064624)

Stephen comes to INDS with both great respect for the existing program and with enthusiastic vision for growth over the next five years. "I perceive my mission is to sustain and consolidate the many strengths of INDS while finding creative new ways to connect with the broader campus community - and with the world beyond Hilltop Circle". Of particular interest to him are the interface between science and religion ("With its diverse student body spanning so many dimensions of contemporary American society, UMBC has a powerful voice to offer here"), and the ways in which arts, humanities and social sciences can communicate and facilitate research in science and engineering ("It is easy to forget that the very concept of a graph was an early interdisciplinary invention - using art to understand a mathematical relationship was a radical idea. What new opportunities are emerging for us to communicate scientific knowledge - through writing, music and art?")

The fellowships are open to all UMBC doctoral and master's level students working on a humanities-related research project that will culminate in a dissertation or thesis. Fellows will reside at least two days a week in the Dresher Center and receive up to $1000 to be used for research travel, materials or other directly project-related expenses. They will share an office in the Dresher Center.  Fellows will be expected to conduct a lunchtime discussion of their work for graduate students and faculty towards the end of the fall semester, to participate in other lunchtime faculty research discussions during the semester, to attend a majority of the Humanities Forum events and to participate in other Dresher Center activities, as requested by the Acting Director. Applications are due August 1 and must include a current C.V., a letter of support from the student's research advisor, and a one-page description of the research that will be conducted during the semester. Position Description

The Department of Foreign Languages is currently seeking qualified candidates for a one year, full-time faculty position in Spanish, pending final budget approval.  The successful candidate will have Native/Near Native fluency in both Spanish and English and a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Spanish with a specialization in applied linguistics or closely related field. 

Qualifications

This position requires a 4/4 teaching load and the successful candidate must be able to teach a range of undergraduate Spanish language courses, as well as graduate level linguistics, and/or TESOL courses.

Qualifications: A competitive candidate will have experience with K-12 Limited English Proficiency program administration and policy development.  Experience in formative assessment is also highly desirable.

The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas at San Antonio, seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in the area of applied linguistics/TESL for the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semester, pending budgetary approval. The department seeks a scholar with expertise in one or more of the following areas: second language literacy, computer assisted language learning, language and content-area instruction, pedagogical grammar and general ESL teacher education.

The department offers a Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language, a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, a Master of Arts degree in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mexican American Studies.  It also provides undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher certification as well as support courses for other programs in the University.

Responsibilities include: Teach 3 graduate and/or undergraduate TESL courses per semester, and provide service to the MA-TESL Program as needed.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate completed by August 31, 2013 in Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics, Language & Literacy, Education or an appropriate discipline. University-level teaching experience. Evidence of research agenda in one of the areas listed above.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, proficiency in a language other than English, ESL/EFL teaching experience, experience advising graduate students, and evidence of publications in one or more of the areas outlined above.

Appointment is for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 only, pending budgetary approval, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. Teaching opportunities for Summer 2014 may be available.
