In addition to this talk, Dr. Whitehead has graciously agreed to serve as the keynote speaker for the April 12, 2014 LLC Graduate Student Conference, "Rethinking Intellectual Activism" here at UMBC.

The theme of the fourth volume of Trans-Scripts is "Constructing (Dis)Ability." We welcome a wide range of submissions from a variety of disciplines. Founded in 2010, Trans-Scripts is a student-run and edited interdisciplinary journal, and the editorial collective of graduate students come from diverse academic fields, including English, History, Culture & Theory, Psychology and Social Behavior, Anthropology, Philosophy, Women’s Studies, and African-American Studies. Faculty advisors represent an even more varied range of disciplines. All submissions will be reviewed by both students and faculty to ensure the highest quality of work. Though the journal is primarily a forum for student work, faculty are welcome to contribute as well. We also publish editorials by renowned experts on each theme covered.

 The Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program welcomes applications from
young people interested in careers in international service. For those
who want to become Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of
State, the Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program provides benefits of up
to $90,000 over two years toward a two-year master's degree, and
arranges internships on Capitol Hill and at U.S. embassies. Fellows
can use the fellowship to attend two-year master's programs in U.S.
institutions to study any area of relevance to the Foreign Service,
including international relations, public policy, public
administration, languages, or business administration.

Applicants must be college seniors or graduates looking to start
two-year graduate programs in fall 2014, must have GPAs of at least
3.2, and must be U.S. citizens. The program welcomes any undergraduate
major and encourages applications from members of minority groups
historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with
financial need. Information and application materials can be found at
www.rangelprogram.org. The application deadline is January 17, 2014.
The Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and managed by
Howard University.

Our event will be a performance in three acts exploring what the End of the World might mean.  The performance will weave together video interviews with UMBC scholars, choral music from the UMBC Camerata, poetry, and drumming to explore the concept of apocalypse from historical, religious, and scientific perspectives.  We will wade through the zombies, disease, and cosmic destruction promised by apocalypse in search of a redeeming reservoir of hope and resilience.
