Learn how you could become a medical doctor debt free. Film presentation of "Dare to Dream" about US students in Cuban medical school.
Join us for our “Dare to Dream” Film Screening! This film tells the story of the largest medical school in the world, the Latin American Medical School, in Havana, Cuba. The story is told through the eyes of US students who received scholarships, with the commitment to return home, and practice medicine in underserved communities in the US.
Through the stories of graduates of ELAM, as it is known in Spanish, we will learn the history of this medical school that is revolutionizing healthcare on a global level. We will also, see the promise these doctors represent for their communities.What happens when a country dares to dream that young people can change the world? A discussion will follow led by Marina Adler Ph.D. (Professor, Sociology, Anthropology and Health Administration and Policy) and Leslie Salgado (Founder, Friends of Latin America “FOLA”).

Deepa Iyer, South Asian American activisit, writer, and lawyer
America is becoming a nation in
which communities of color will comprise the majority population by 2040. In
her talk, Deepa Iyer, a racial justice advocate and writer, will explore the
racial realities affecting people of color, women, and immigrants and refugees
in America today. She will share stories of struggle and resistance from
communities affected by backlash, xenophobia and Islamophobia. Iyer will
provide ideas for maintaining equitable and inclusive policies and institutions
that reflect the racial realities and intersectional identities of communities
in America.
A book signing will follow the
program.
Speaker bio: Deepa Iyer is a South Asian-American
writer, lawyer, and racial justice advocate. Iyer’s areas of expertise include
the post-9/11 America experiences of South Asian, Muslim, Arab and Sikh
immigrants; national security and immigration policies; and racial equity and
solidarity practices. Iyer served for a decade as the Executive Director of
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) where she helped to shape
SAALT’s work on civil and immigrant rights issues. Her experiences there formed
the basis for her first book, We Too Sing
America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial
Future, which received a 2016 American Book Award and was selected as a top
10 multicultural non-fiction books of 2015 by Booklist. Since We
Too Sing America was published, Iyer has been part of over 50 community
conversations around the country on the themes in the book, at college
campuses, non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions among others.
Iyer’s current work includes a collaborative project around rapid response
coordination in the wake of criminalization policies and efforts and a
solidarity project which includes a monthly podcast called Solidarity Is This.

EVENT: The Wildly Colorful Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing
A Lecture by Dr. Alfreda Murck, Wednesday, March 7th 4 p.m.
Asian Studies is co-sponsoring this
event with The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at UMBC.
Room 132 in the Performing Arts & Humanities Building
Dr. Alfreda Murck, historian of Chinese visual culture, will
present a lecture on the work of Lo Ch'ing, the Poet-Painter. Her lecture seeks
to place the artist in the context of the millennia-long tradition of Chinese
Landscape Painting and coincides with the CADVC's current exhibition, The Poet's Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing.
Formerly the Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York (1978 to 1991), Dr. Murck is the author of Poetry and Painting
in Song China: The Subtle Art of Dissent (Harvard, 2000). She has published
numerous articles in English and Chinese on China's visual arts and poetry, and
co-curated the exhibition Mao's Golden Mangoes and the Cultural Revolution
at The Museum Reitburg.
In 2015, for the book William Kentridge: Notes towards a Model Opera,
and exhibition at the Ullen's Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, she wrote
"Kentridge and Chinese Painting". For the San Francisco Asian Art
Museum's 2016 exhibition catalogue Emperor's Treasures: Chinese Art from the
National Palace Museum, Taipei, she contributed an essay "A Millennium
of Imperial Collecting and Patronage".
Dr. Murck received her Ph.D in Chinese Art and Archeology
from Princeton University. From 1991 to 2013, She lived in Taiwan and China. In
Beijing, she was a consultant to the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City and a
researcher at their Painting and Calligraphy Research Center. From 2000 to
2013, Dr, Murck worked with The Henry Luce Foundation on a series of workshops
supporting the development of western art history as a discipline in China.

EAC Visual Data software renewed at UMBC!
EAC Interfaces with Blackboard to Compile Assessment Data
Join us at TechFest, Bridging Student Learning Outcomes and Success Analytics, and Closing the Loop to learn more!
UMBC's license to the EAC Visual Data software has been renewed for 2018. This product interfaces with our Blackboard learning management system to compile assessment data. Over the past year, Jennifer Harrison, Associate Director for Assessment in the Faculty Development Center, has been working with faculty and departments to program and align their outcomes using EAC. Several departments, including the Honors College, LRC, OUE, MCS, and Psychology are actively using this data. Other programs are working towards using the program, and we would like to encourage more programs to implement this too!
Since EAC is a building block for Blackboard (Bb), the EAC developers have collaborated with Blackboard developers to begin to pull Blackboard Outcomes away from its labor intensive and ineffective secondary-evaluation assessment system towards the next generation of assessment tools. EAC has helped Bb to modify its Goals and Assessments module, so faculty can link outcomes to specific direct measures (i.e., rubrics and tests in Bb), aggregate data in limited ways, and export results aligned to the outcomes.
As part of the NILOA Occasional Paper that Sherri Braxton and Jennifer Harrison co-authored, they reviewed the range of software options that support learning assessment. Although they concluded that current software products do not yet meet the needs of systematized authentic assessment data management, EAC has begun to bridge this gap. For programs that do not use Bb, the FDC has developed tools in Excel to align outcomes and collect data (see the MA in TTL example here).
If your program is interested in using this tool, please contact Jennifer Harrison for more information or to set up a meeting to discuss the assessment goals for your program. Using this program can help ensure that your program has developed and implemented an assessment process to evaluate its overall effectiveness and compliance.

PSLLT and TSLL Call for Papers
The 16th annual Technology for Second Language Learning (TSLL) Conference will be held jointly with the 10th annual Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching (PSLLT) Conference September 6-8, 2018 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Anne Bradlow of Northwestern University will be the plenary speaker.
Please note that while the conferences will be held together, there are two different Calls for Papers:
For
TSLL, we welcome abstract submissions for 25-minute papers (20-minute presentation + 5 minutes for questions) and poster presentations addressing any aspect of technology and oral communication. Abstracts for TSLL should be no longer than 300 words and should be submitted through
The Linguist List “EasyAbs” platform.
For PSLLT, we welcome abstract submission for aspects of L2 pronunciation for all second languages and contexts, but especially on perception and pronunciation. There are three main types of presentations:
- Oral presentations (20-minute presentation + 5 minutes for questions)
- Poster presentation
- Teaching tips (10-minute evidence-based pedagogical approaches to teaching perception and pronunciation)
The deadline for submissions to both conferences is April 16, 2018. Decisions will be announced by May 16, 2018.

My name is Danisha Brown, Program Manager from Leaders of Tomorrow
Youth Center, Inc (LTYC). LTYC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
that supports youths, ages 5-18, in the state of Maryland and DC with
art programs that empower them to excel in the arts, academics, and
social development.
Due to our rapid growth, we are currently seeking dynamic and
dedicated artists and educators with experience in performing and
creative arts to serve as In-School, After School, Summer & On-Call
Instructors for PK-12 Student. We have many flexible opportunities for
