The Kraken Won Its 2nd Award at the Lowell Kinetic Race!
The Kraken Upcycle Took a Trip This Weekend to Lowell, MA
Congratulations to a local team in Lowell, MA for their recent win at the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race in New
England, MA with our very own Kraken! Race coordinator, Bianca Mauro, transported the Kraken Upcycle up to Lowell MA this past weekend. The team succeeded in finishing the 6.5 mile course race, which went
through the city to a mud pit, through the state park and beach to a sand trap, and
finally across the Merrimack River. In addition, the Kraken Upcycle has
also won its second award in three years of racing: Lowell Kinetic
Sculpture Race's Golden Flipper Award for most interesting water entry, as the team rode down the ramp into the water at full speed!
We surely know Steven McAlpine is proud. Congratulations again to the entire crew, we're excited to see what's
next for the Kraken!

The Kraken is a moving art piece composed
entirely of plastic bottles, plastic bags, soda rings, and other
pollutants of the world's water sources. On a typical day, you'd find it
proudly standing outside the Fine Arts building. More about the

We are so pleased to announce our latest educational outreach initiative, "Valuable Voices" -- a free iPhone app for teachers!
The app provides 12 ready-to-implement exercises for students and educators -- one a month, for a year's worth of teaching -- to build awareness of language and culture. The teaching exercises are geared toward middle/high school English but can easily be adapted for elementary or even college, in a variety of content areas.
To download the app, go to the App Store on your iPhone and type in "Valuable Voices" -- attached is a screenshot so that you know what to look for. To our knowledge this is the only sociolinguistics app of its kind. Hopefully one day we can expand to create more apps -- and hopefully expand to make the apps available to Android users, too.
We would love to hear any feedback you may have, and please pass this along to any teachers or students who may be interested. We’ll be presenting on the app and some of our other educational initiatives at several conferences coming up, including at the Linguistic Society of America/Society for Linguistic Anthropology as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and we plan to incorporate insights from those who have used it.
We couldn't have done this work without our team of undergraduate and graduate student assistants, as well as our many teacher consultants and their students, who are always our inspiration!

Job Announcement: Tenure-track position in TESOL
University of Pittsburgh
The Department of Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education is seeking applicants for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of English Language Learners in PK-12 schools and Second Language Education starting August 2017. This position is in the tenure stream and requires research, graduate teaching, and advising duties.
Candidates must have earned a doctorate by August 2017 in one of the following areas: TESOL/ESL/Second Language Education, Applied Linguistics with an emphasis in second language acquisition and pedagogy related to the education of English Language Learners in K-12 settings. The successful candidate also must have: 1) a promising and clearly defined research agenda in the area of English Language Learners in PK-12 classrooms; 2) an established or emerging record of publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals; 3) a record of external grant funding or potential to compete for external funding; 4) knowledge of the social, political, and historical circumstances involved in the education of English language learners, and 5) evidence of, or a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring graduate students. Applicants must also possess knowledge of linguistically and culturally responsive pedagogy grounded in principles of equity and content-based pedagogies grounded in bi/multilingual and applied linguistic research. Strong proficiency in English is required and proficiency in a language other than English is recommended.
Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses in the department’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Master of Education (MEd) (both face-to-face and on-line) programs to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers for instruction in linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms. Experience teaching online and developing online courses, an interest in innovative approaches to online education, and experience in second language testing and assessment are preferred. In addition to instruction in the MAT and MEd programs, the candidate must be able to provide doctoral student research mentoring in the area of English Language Learners as part of the Language Literacy, and Culture PhD and EdD programs. The successful applicant also needs to have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, both within and outside the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education and possess strong communication and organizational skills. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Spring 2017 Dissertation Fellowship

The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship
Application Deadline: Friday, November 4, 2016
The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.
The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.
Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.
Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Spring 2017. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Spring is a total stipend of $8,448.00 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.
To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:
- be in good academic standing;
- provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that
1) describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward completion; and,
2) verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;
- provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;
- submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and
- submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.
Applications for Spring 2017 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate until Friday, November 4, 2016. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by Friday, November 11, 2016. Revolution of the Eye exhibition opens Thursday, Sept. 29th

On Thursday, September 29th at 5 pm, the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at UMBC presents Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television.
Avant-garde
art shaped the look and content of American television in its formative
years from the 1940s through the mid-1970s, and in turn television
introduced the public to the latest trends in art and design. Presenting
more than 260 art objects and clips, Revolution of the Eye investigates
how artists fascinated with this brash new medium and its technological
possibilities contributed to network programs and design campaigns;
appeared on television to promote modern art; and explored, critiqued,
or absorbed the new medium in their work.
Revolution of the Eye is curated by Dr. Maurice Berger, Research
Professor and Chief Curator, Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture,
UMBC.

Revolution of the Eye exhibition opens Thursday, Sept. 29th
Exhibition opening at CADVC at 5pm on Thursday, Sept. 29th
On Thursday, September 29th at 5 pm, the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at UMBC presents Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television.
Avant-garde
art shaped the look and content of American television in its formative
years from the 1940s through the mid-1970s, and in turn television
introduced the public to the latest trends in art and design. Presenting
more than 260 art objects and clips, Revolution of the Eye investigates
how artists fascinated with this brash new medium and its technological
possibilities contributed to network programs and design campaigns;
appeared on television to promote modern art; and explored, critiqued,
or absorbed the new medium in their work.
Revolution of the Eye is curated by Dr. Maurice Berger, Research
Professor and Chief Curator, Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture,
UMBC.
Exhibition Dates: September 29th - December 10th, 2016

the Birth of American Television is organized by the Jewish Museum and
the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, UMBC. The exhibition is
made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Skirball Fund forAmerican Jewish Life Exhibitions, the
Stern Family Philanthropic Foundation, the National Endowment for the
