Romani Lachrymose was composed in 2013 as a soundtrack to a dance by UMBC student Rachel Lum and later adapted for live cello and electronics. The piece for solo cello and electronics is an exploration of the expressive and improvisatory nature of the Romani style. This tone poem on the concept of lachrymose places listeners directly into the mind of someone spiraling into depression. The use of electronics in this piece adds a new dimension, engulfing listeners in sounds of lament as achievable only on the cello.  Romani Lachrymose was premiered by Chanel Whitehead on November 6, 2015 on Samuel Winnie's senior composition recital in the Linehan Concert Hall at UMBC.

Their accolades as a band include 250+ shows in one year, winning the 2014 Floydfest 'On The Rise' competition, their latest album, Midnight Creep/Noonday Stomp, being ranked in the NBT Music Radio's Top 150, and receiving Radio Flag's Radio Star Award for Best Artist in Fall 2014.

"Discourse And Conversation Analysis" May be Offered If you have an interest in earning 3 credits this summer, consider taking Dr. Christine Mallinson's LLC 750: Discourse and Conversation Analysis class. 

Course objectives:
    • To think critically about the role of language, language ideologies, and linguistic practice in our everyday practice and in our social institutions, 
    • To acquire a basic understanding of the collective areas of study known as discourse analysis and conversation analysis, particularly from the fields of linguistics, sociology, anthropology, and media/communication studies, 
    • To conduct close readings of written and spoken texts in a variety of forms and genres, particularly with regard to how power circulates through language,
    • To compare and assess various methodologies of discourse/ conversation analysis in relation to one’s own individual research interests/project.
This would be offered as a 4-week on-line class in Summer Session II (July 11th to August 15). It is open to any LLC student.
