Marina A. Adler of UMBC and Karl Lenz of the Dresden University of Technology in Germany have published a new book entitled Father Involvement in the Early Years: An International Comparison of Policy and Practice.

Fatherhood is in transition and being challenged by often contradictory forces: societal mandates to be both an active father and provider, men’s own wish to be more involved with their children, and the institutional arrangements in which fathers work and live. Adler's book explores these phenomena in the context of cross-national policies and their relation to the daily childcare practices of fathers. It presents the current state of knowledge on father involvement with young children in six countries from different welfare state regimes with unique policies related to parenting in general and fathers in particular: Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, the UK and the USA.

Dr. Uzma Rashid, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Management and Technology in Lahore, Pakistan, has recently been appointed as Associate Dean for the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

She recently presented in the Fulbright and Humphrey Alumni conference held in Islamabad, titled "Lag raha he madam Amreeka se wapas ai he~!" ["It does look like madam has returned from the United States"]: Gendered religious identities and sustainable development in Pakistan. It was an autoethnographic account of her own gendered religious performances since her return from the US, and she looked at those within the larger context of the country's issues of intolerance and discrimination.

She has just had an abstract entitled "Muslim women as leaders within and outside the Muslim community: Trends and challenges" accepted for presentation at the Summer Global Symposium on Women's Leadership to be held at the University of Riverside, CA, June 3-4 2016

Call for Proposals

The Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference is requesting proposals for workshops and posters. We are looking for excited and passionate individuals who are doing service-learning and civic engagement work in their communities and classes. Please share your experiences and help us collectively to develop more robust service-learning and civic engagement programs at every level throughout our communities.
Please frame your proposal around one of the four main themes we are focusing on for SLCE 2016: Community Partnerships, Social Change Leadership, Academic Service-Learning, and Civic and Community Engagement. More information on how to apply is on the application form.

Please note that proposals are due Monday, February 8, 2016 at 11:55pm.

Call for Award Nominations

At the SLCE Conference, we also take the time to recognize individuals who have had an outstanding impact on or contribution to service-learning and civic engagement in higher education. Students, faculty, staff and community partners may submit nominations, and self-nominations are also accepted for all award categories. Submit nominations through our online form by Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 11:55pm. For more information on award criteria, click here. Registration for students is just $10 for students at MDCCC membership institutions & Universities at Shady Grove and $20 for those outside the compact.

For 35 years, the Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning have been known as exceptional places to present and to learn from faculty colleagues on effective teaching and learning. This interdisciplinary teaching conference includes faculty, administrators, and graduate students from across the United States and abroad. Participants are given the opportunity to exchange ideas, build a repertoire of skills that can be put to immediate use, and to network with colleagues. Course Description:This course investigates the interaction between the environment and human behaviors and beliefs. Students will be introduced to the various ways in which anthropology has sought to understand human-environment relations, both from utilitarian perspectives (such as cultural ecology, ethno-ecology, and political ecology) and symbolic ones (focused on the meanings people give to the non-human world).
