START Internship Opportunity Hello Everyone,

This internship just came across my desk via Global Studies. It's a little late, but you still have time.

The research center START, which is based in College Park, is offering many internship positions for Spring 2016. Ranging from terrorism ideology and defense policy to CBRN research and GIS remote sensing projects, START is a top tier research institution with an extraordinary staff of subject-matter-experts (SME's) and many connections with various federal agencies, DoD, Intelligence Community, private sector, and foreign organizations. The priority deadline is October 30th and the final application deadline is November 13th. About the book: Fatherhood is in transition and being challenged by often contradictory forces: societal mandates to be both an active father and provider, men’s own wish to be more involved with their children, and the institutional arrangements in which fathers work and live. This book explores these phenomena in the context of cross-national policies and their relation to the daily childcare practices of fathers. It presents the current state of knowledge on father involvement with young children in six countries from different welfare state regimes with unique policies related to parenting in general and fathers in particular: Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, the UK and the USA.

Nine UMBC HAPP Public Health Track students attended the 2015 Fall Symposium at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) on October 13, 2015. Hosted by the Wendy Klag Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, the event’s topic was One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Learning about Autism from Studies Big and Small. 

At the reception following the symposium, UMBC students had the opportunity to meet and talk with the speakers as well as graduate students of JHSPH who showcased their autism research at the concurrent poster session. 

Dr. Marie Diener-West, Chair of the MPH program at JHSPH, took time to meet with our UMBC students at the reception and provided invaluable information on their Master’s and Doctoral studies. Through this networking event, two students have secured internship opportunities!

Another volunteer opportunity for you. UMBC political science major Marc Szczepaniak is managing Scott Goldman's campaign  in the  Democratic primary for Baltimore City Council's 1st district race. The 1st district encompasses the beautiful neighborhoods of southeast Baltimore. Volunteers will help with canvassing, and organizing and staffing campaign events.

Another volunteer opportunity for those interested. UMBC alum, Samuel Fisher, is the Campaign Manager for Ed Marcinko, who is running for Baltimore City Council's First District. They are looking for volunteers too help out with canvassing, data input, phone banking, organizing volunteers and staffing campaign events. The First District consists of Fells Point, Canton, Little Italy, Bayview, Graceland Park, Greektown, Brewers Hill, and a couple more historic city Neighborhoods.

Kathleen Matthews for Congress

Do you want to be part of the grassroots effort to change America, but
you're not sure how to get involved? Come intern for the Kathleen Matthews
Campaign! We are seeking passionate and energetic applicants who want to
learn how campaigns work, how to run them, and help elect the next
Representative of Maryland's 8th Congressional District.

There is only a small time requirement to be considered an intern with our
campaign, and your schedule is set by you. Being part of the campaign team
is like gaining another family, and our struggles and triumphs are shared
collectively. Come Election Day, you'll walk out with a ton of new
friends, professional networks, and a full understanding of how to run
your own local grassroots field program.

In addition, we are offering a fellowship program for those who are
looking to take their involvement in the campaign to the next level. As
such, there is a greater time commitment required than interns, but
fellows will be privy to our Field Organizer Training Program. The goal of
this once a week seminar is for fellows to leave the Matthews campaign
ready to work on, and eventually run, their own campaigns in the future.

The Matthews Campaign internship and fellowship programs are designed to
be an enriching educational experience where participants will engage in
daily field activities, learn from and have access to seasoned campaign
staff, and hear from a variety political guest speakers.
