The Last days of The Hour Haus

<Tagline>Droneberg & Goodrich on the end of the Hour Haus era</Tagline>

At midnight on Thursday, July 30th, 2015, the final amps and drum kits were reluctantly lugged out of Station North's longtime music rehearsal space, The Hour Haus. After 25 years as a music practice facility and performance venue, the building is being converted to office space. Audio producer Adam Droneberg and photographer Dan Goodrich spent the past few months chronicling the end of the Hour Haus era, collecting interviews and portraits of the building's final musical residents. Today, with a stroke of the clock and the change of a lock, their documentary work has become instant history.

LLC 890: Research Proposal Seminar in Fall 2015

LLC 890 is an intensive research writing course that is open to all students who have a major research-based writing project. It is useful for those students who have finished comps or are finishing comps in September, as well as students who have not yet started comps and are in earlier stages of their work. Writing projects could include: a dissertation proposal, a pre-proposal draft, paper revisions for an article, a grant or fellowship proposal, or other major writing projects.

Students will work individually with Dr. Bickel and a peer writing partner in a recursive writing process throughout the semester. We will consider initial research problems and questions, theoretical frameworks and key concepts, writing literature reviews, the ethics and integrity of research writing, writing as inquiry and a daily practice, methodological frameworks and particular methods, issues of interdisciplinarity in content and research processes, how to make compelling presentations, and working effectively with dissertation advisors and committees.

The course will meet roughly every other week with intensive writing and feedback in between meetings. Skype is a possibility for those who cannot make class meetings. The course begins Monday, August 31, 4:30-7 in the MCS conference room, but the participants will decide together on subsequent meeting times. Note: 890 can be taken more than once.
Please be in touch with Dr. Bickel if you are considering enrolling for more details including scheduling issues and permission.

About PROMISE:

PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP is a university system-wide effort for the state of Maryland to facilitate underrepresented STEM graduate student and postdoctoral professional development and pathways to careers. UMBC leads the alliance that consists of all 14 colleges, universities, and regional education centers in the University System of Maryland, four community colleges, and a former NSF Model Institution of Excellence Hispanic Serving Institution in Puerto Rico. PROMISE has been a critical catalyst for increasing enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minorities. The program also will contribute to the higher education literature on retention and professional development for graduate students and postdocs. The Rotating Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Professors-in-Training program for Maryland’s institutions (including Master’s serving institutions, HBCUs, community colleges, and an HSI) are among the innovations that respond to AGEP’s call to support the national goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who will enter academic STEM careers.

To learn more about PROMISE please visit the program's website.

The award will support two UMBC research students for two years and be done in collaboration with Jesus Caban, Gerard Reidy and Joseph Bleiberg from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's National Intrepid Center of Excellence.

The research will the support temporal exploration and analysis of traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder from patient cohorts. The group will design interactive visualization to move beyond using a small subset of data from the wealth and breadth of clinical information to improve diagnostic accuracy.

The project will help clinicians obtain new insights about the underlying conditions of patients, analyze complex hidden clinical patterns, and visually explore the correlations between many assessment techniques and imaging modalities including neuroimaging, neuropsychiatric measures, patient history, demographic information, and clinical tests).
