Shari Waldstein, Psych, Named Lipitz Professor for 2015-2016
Recognized for innovative and distinguished teaching at UMBC
Shari Waldstein, professor of psychology, has been named the Lipitz Professor for 2015-2016. This professorship is supported by an endowment created by Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation “to recognize and support innovative and distinguished teaching and research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.”
A clinical psychologist who specializes in cardiovascular behavioral medicine and medical neuropsychology, Dr. Waldstein is known internationally for fundamental contributions to the understanding of the links among early, multi-level risk factors for cardiovascular disease, sub-clinical brain pathology, neurocognitive performance, and their development across the lifespan. In recent years she has increasingly focused on identifying the multi-level mechanisms underlying race and socioeconomic status-related disparities in cardiovascular and brain health.
Since coming to UMBC, she has been awarded more than $6,000,000 in grants and contracts. Dr. Waldstein’s contributions to the profession of psychology are numerous. She has served for 18 years as director of the behavioral medicine track in our human services psychology Ph.D. program and has mentored 22 Ph.D. students. She also works closely with colleagues at UMB, where she holds a secondary faculty appointment as professor of medicine. For more information about her work, click here.

Celebrating Baltimore's arts scene
The Baker Artist Awards were created to support artists and promote Greater Baltimore as a strong creative community. Through a sophisticated online portfolio and significant monetary prizes for the winners, the Baker Artist Awards serves artists of all disciplines who live and work in Baltimore City and its five surrounding counties. The website and awards were established by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund and are a program of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.
Up to three Mary Sawyers Baker Prizes are awarded annually for up to $25,000 each. These awards recognize established artists who demonstrate a dedication to their art, a mastery of craft, and a commitment to excellence. Mary Sawyers Baker, one of Baltimore's early philanthropists, studied voice as a young girl in Paris and embraced the arts throughout her life. She established the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in 1964 to honor her husband, a well-known Baltimore civic leader.

Felix Burgos Receives Dresher Center Award
Fall 2015 Graduate Research Fellowship
UMBC's Dresher Center for the Humanities just named Felix Burgos, LLC Cohort 14, a Fall 2015 Dresher Center Residential Graduate Student Research Fellow.
As an LLC Doctoral Candidate, Felix is doing research into the role that memory and memorialization might play in understanding the ongoing armed conflict in Colombia.
As part of his fellowship, Felix will spend two days per week in the Dresher Center on his research and will receive a monetary award to offset travel and other research-related expenses. He will present a session as part of the CURRENTS: Humanities Work Now series.

Knowledge Production and Social Science Career Development in LLC
This class will engage students in social science approaches to the production of culture through a series of active learning projects that emphasize writing, public speaking, and research skills. Students will synthesize subject-matter knowledge they have acquired, integrate cross-disciplinary knowledge, and connect theory and application in preparation for entry into a career by preparing materials they will use in their chosen professions. In addition, students will gain exposure to professional networks that will further their academic development. Students will assemble portfolios that will showcase their accomplishments in ways that give them a professional and academic advantage. The course will also require that students demonstrate their ability to link theory, the planning and execution of scholarly research, and social science writing. Students will apply their understanding of these issues through individual projects on subjects of their own choosing, presenting their work in progress for critical discussion and publication.

AMST 630 Cultural Policy - Course Fall '15
Instructor: James Counts Early
This course, constructed around proactive student-participation, examines the historical backdrop and contemporary development of cultural policy in the United States, especially in relation to the practical problem of achieving cultural equity within the public and private institutions of a continuously-evolving multi-cultural political democracy and intersections with growing transnational cultural identities. Special attention is paid to the cultural democracy citizen-protagonists’ dynamics and policy projects of certain periods and to interactions between the official cultural institutions and various racial and ethnic groups, of cultural areas and regions and of socio-economic classes---including gender identity and sexual identity policies.
Reading, lecture-discussion and illustrative cultural materials embrace intellectual and artistic strategies reflected in the graphic and plastic arts, dance, music, literature and various segments of popular culture. Analytical perspectives draw upon the disciplines of history, cultural heritage policy, anthropology, folklore, and political science/Participatory Democracy.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend program provides funding for faculty and independent scholars to pursue research in the humanities during the summer. UMBC may submit up to two nominations for NEH Summer Stipends.
These stipends support individuals in advancing research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Though this is an NEH program, many faculty members in the arts and social sciences work on projects that the NEH might fund. Summer Stipends support projects at any stage of development.
Successful applicants will receive outright awards of $6,000 to support two consecutive months of full-time research during summer 2016.

Black Masculinity in the 21st Century
North Carolina Central University’s Departments of Language and Literature and Mass Communication will host the eighth African American Literature/Studies Symposium on Thursday, November 12, 2015. This year’s theme is “Black Masculinity in the 21st Century”. This symposium will explore contemporary approaches to the study of Black Masculinity in African American Studies.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African & African-American Studies and Director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture & Entrepreneurship at Duke University.
Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Afrofuturism, Authenticity, Childhood, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Folklore, Disability Studies, Diaspora Studies, Drama, Hip Hop Studies, Intertextuality, Film/Television Studies, Literary Canon, Memory, Protest, Pop Culture, and Urban Literature
Graduate and creative submissions are welcomed.

Participants whose papers are selected will be contacted in late August. Complete presentation papers should be sent to Dr. Rountree and Dr. Robinson by Friday, October 30, 2015. Additionally, accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in an essay collection edited by the symposium co-chairs.
