The Language Studies Department is seeking a Full Time-English as a Second Language Continuing Tenure Track Faculty position, effective Fall 2015 (pending budget approval)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in TESOL or a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with TESOL concentration or Master's in Education with TESOL concentration.
- Two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) teaching experience in an ESOL program at a secondary or post-secondary level.
Ability to teach French as well as ESL preferred.
CRITERIA: The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Other information and observations made during the interview process may be considered in the selection process. Resume/CV and cover letter are required with the application. Please ensure that your documents address the criteria listed below for this position.
- Extent and relevance of teaching experience.
- Extent and relevance of graduate educational preparation in areas relevant to anticipated course assignments.
- Extent and relevance of non-teaching professional experience to anticipated teaching assignments. Example: Curriculum development.
- Extent and relevance of scope and diversity of content areas in which teaching assignments can be undertaken.
- Evidence of ability to teach effectively within, and contribute positively to, a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural student population and campus environment.
Candidates for teaching positions who are invited for an interview will be asked to demonstrate their teaching effectiveness in a simulated classroom, laboratory, or other relevant pedagogical situation, the conditions of which will be determined in advance and shared with all candidates prior to the interview.
Applicants should fully describe their qualifications and experience, with specific reference to each of the minimum qualification and criteria listed because this is the information on which the initial review of materials will be based.

IMDA MFA Program alumna Marian Glebes teams up with BMA
Year long project to build a habitat with The Loading Dock
IMDA MFA Program alumna Marian Glebes, in partnership with the non-profit The Loading Dock, has been selected for a year-long project to be produced for the BMA’s new center for learning and creativity, opening October 25, 2015.
The new center will offer a variety of imaginative art experiences, including a community commons, where Glebes and The Loading Dock will produce artworks onthe theme of ‘home.’
Seeing the BMA as a metaphoric house to Baltimore’s greatest cultural assets, Glebes anticipates creating an interactive environment in which audiences can consider their personal relationships to the materials of home and to the objects of the museum. The project will explore how audiences’ relationships with those materials, and their individual habitats, connect them to the larger notion of place and environment.

Maurice Berger's exhibition opens to accolades
Revolution of the Eye, the first exhibition to explore the relationship between modern art and early American television has made a big splash with its recent opening at The Jewish Museum, NYC. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Maurice Berger, Research Professor and Chief Curator, Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, UMBC, and curator, National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting, the Jewish Museum, New York.

Revolution of the Eye was named critic's pick in the
Village Voice,

AM NY, adding to great press coverage in the

Weekly Writing Workshops for LLC Students Only
There's no cost for these workshops (but you must sign up)
This workshop, designed and conducted by Dr. Craig Saper, will provide a springboard for students who may be struggling to get their scholarship on paper.
Instead of formal seminars and generalized, group-based programs, this workshop emphasizes a regular, informal, and ongoing exchange of feedback on an individual’s work and scholarly mentoring.
Traditional writing workshops and activities addressed to graduate students mainly focus on the individualized one-to-one tutoring assistance which is, at times, the only moment in the writing process where the product is revised before submission. Although these activities satisfy the immediate needs of paper submission, it is important to consider that the essential foundation of scholarship is the process of constant peer-review and revise & resubmit.
This workshop consists of regular online meetings and writing reviews both in groups and individually. Face to face meetings scheduled at mutually convenient times so as not to interfere with other courses.

Call for Participation - IARSLCE Research Fellowship
Project on Community Engagement Professionals
Campus Compact is launching a project to develop a better understanding of the competencies and professional development practices of community engagement professionals. The research aspects of this project, including review of literature and data collection, will be completed by a corps of Research Fellows in the summer and early fall of 2015. Research Fellows’ work will be coordinated by Lina Dostilio, director of the Center for Community-Engaged Teaching and Research at Duquesne University and is a program of the Graduate Student Network of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE). You need not be a graduate student to participate: the opportunity is an inclusive invitation to those who are interested.

For young people of color, growing up in Baltimore is often anything but Rockwellian. Most of the community lives below the poverty line and there’s a widespread distrust of law enforcement. Consequently, for many of those young people, the recent death of Freddie Gray was a tipping point. On Monday, the frustration of a community boiled over into rioting and looting.

“Freeman A. Hrabowski III is learning to speak French. He is reading Proust in French. He is texting with students, in French. During a recent interview with SmartCEO, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County president is practicing his tenses and describing his teacher, a doctoral student at UMBC, in French.” This doctoral student is our dear Landry Digeon (Cohort 15).
SmartCEO also interviewed Landry to know about his experience as Dr. Hrabowski’s French teacher. This is a excerpt of Landry’s response:
SmartCEO: What is it like to have Freeman Hrabowski as a student? Is it intimidating at all?
Digeon: Lessons with Dr. Hrabowski are a combination of entertainment and intense work. At first, I sure was intimidated by teaching the president of UMBC. But Dr. Hrabowski was very approachable and personable from the beginning. His enthusiasm and high spirit quickly made me feel comfortable. In our first lesson, we looked at French writer Victor Hugo’s poem “Demain dès l’Aube.” He instantaneously fell in love with it and learned it all in a couple of weeks. I am consistently impressed by Dr. Hrabowski’s progress. Trying to keep up with him is probably more intimidating than his position as a renowned university president.
