Public Policy Professor and Chair Donald Norris spoke to The Baltimore Sun and WJZ 13 about risk-taking in the gubernatorial campaign and Ben Carson’s possible bid for the presidency.

In a Baltimore Sun article about how both nominees for governor have avoided risky campaign strategies, Norris commented on Republican nominee Larry Hogan’s vague campaign promises. “As soon as he gives specifics, that opens him to attack from his opponent,” Norris said.

Norris also spoke to WJZ 13 about former Johns Hopkins head of neurosurgery Ben Carson’s possible bid for the presidency, mentioning that Carson might be too far to the right to become the Republican nominee. Norris called Carson “a tremendous human being” but did not have high hopes for his presidential bid, saying, “He’ll be a very, very long shot. Even experienced politicians making the kind of comments he makes will be out of the race very, very quickly.”

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year.

For the 2014-2015 academic year, two $1,000 scholarship will be given. The recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on November 12, 2014. Attendance at the lecture is mandatory. 

Criteria

The student selected to receive this award should:

• Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC.
• Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.
• Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a UMBC faculty from whom the applicant has taken a course.
• Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.
• Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
• Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other community involvement.

We seek to provide a space to share and engage with innovative ideas for conceptualizing and confronting violence, encountering resilience, and practicing resistance.
