From the more than 140 qualified proposals, three finalists were invited to campus to present their site-specific design concept to the Principal Selection Committee. After much reflection and discussion, the committee voted Sayre’s concept as the most reflective of UMBC’s vision of a public art installation that invites community engagement, reflects the passage of time, and embraces the values and culture of UMBC. 

Thomas Sayre has designed and built public art projects all over the world and has participated in design teams for civic, educational and museum buildings. Along with architect Steve Schuster, Sayre is a founding principal in the multi-disciplinary design firm Clearscapes, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Sayre believes that art will only work when disparate opinions come together through collaboration to form a coherent vision.

The Rubys are project-based funding for emerging and established Baltimore-regional artists for the creation of innovative and bold endeavors that will have significant impact for the artist and on the community at-large. The grants support the region’s gems – the local creative community of performing, visual, media, and literary artists.

The current cycle will be funding projects based in the Visual Arts and Literary Arts. Grant guidelines are available for download, as well as one can sign up for various grant info sessions that will take place next month. Submission deadline is Monday, June 30, 2014.

Wisniewski Research & Publications UMBC Language, Literacy, & Culture doctoral student Kevin A. Wisniewski was recently named a 2014 Michael Denker Chesapeake Chapter Fellow at the American Printing History Association. The fellowship is named after a former Chesapeake Chapter President.The fellowship offers one year’s membership and active participation in the association’s various activities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including a presentation of original research at an upcoming symposium on the history colonial printing and typography.
 
Wisniewski will also be presenting a paper at the upcoming American Literature Association’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. with professors from Ohio University, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Massachusetts, May 22-25, in a panel entitled, “Graphic Humor in the 19th-Century Periodical.” 

Finally, Wisniewski’s review of Michael David Cohen’s monograph Reconstructing the Campus: Higher Education and the American Civil War (University of Virginia Press, 2012) is forthcoming in the journal Civil War History, and he is awaiting the publication of sections he completed on the early American republic for a forthcoming online, Open Access American History textbook entitled American Yawp (http://www.americanyawp.com/).
The project is edited by Joseph Locke (University of Texas-Pan American) and Ben Wright (Rice University) and boasts an impressively Editorial Board that includes Edward Ayers, Kathleen Brown, Joyce Chaplin, Woody Holton, James Merrell, and Richard White.

Election years are particularly exciting times for students of Political Science, and also offer unique opportunities to participate directly in the field of our study. To this end, the Department of Political Science has posted and emailed several notices regarding internship opportunities for various local campaigns. We have posted these for the purpose of making students aware of potentially educational and professionally advantageous opportunities. We have postedevery such opportunity that candidates or members of candidates' campaigns have sent us, and in most cases, using the campaigns' own wording.

At no time should any message written, posted, or forwarded by us be construed as advocacy or endorsement of any campaign, candidate, organization, or party. Doing so would be inappropriate for a state-funded educational institution such as UMBC, and we apologize if anyone has taken any of our messages as representing the views or opinions of the Department of Political Science, any of its staff or faculty members, or the university community.

PAGE (Publicly Active Graduate Education) is Imagining America's network for publicly engaged graduate students in humanities, arts, and design. PAGE enhances the theoretical and practical tools for public engagement, fosters a national, interdisciplinary community of peers and veteran scholars, and creates opportunities for collaborative knowledge production. The PAGE consortium, made up of alumni and allies of the program, promotes opportunities for mentorship and peer support from IA's network.

Imagining America (IA) invites graduate students with a demonstrated interest in public scholarship and/or artistic practice to apply for a 2014-2015 PAGE Fellowship. Awardees receive $500 to attend a half-day Fellows Summit on October 8th and the 2014 Imagining America national conference, October 9th-11th in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fellows also commit to participating in a yearlong working group to promote collaborative art-making, teaching, writing, and research projects. PAGE alumni and Fellows will work together to organize monthly conference calls around themes and questions relevant to the needs of publicly engaged graduate students. In doing so, PAGE looks to foster a cohort of Fellows interested in pursuing collective and innovative scholarly practices. Fellows are asked to be active participants in the Imagining America network through posting on the IA blog, presenting at regional meetings or campus workshops, or other related professional convenings. Additionally, each Fellow will be tasked with co-facilitating a webinar or workshop during the 2014-2015 academic year. Past examples include: book group discussions, virtual dinner parties, guest lectures, skill-building demonstrations, and music performances.

Graduate students from IA member campuses at all stages of their MA/MFA/PhD programs may apply to be PAGE Fellows.
 
The submission deadline is May 16th.

Offering courses in research design, quantitative reasoning, statistical methods, and data processing, their goal is to integrate methods of quantitative analysis within a broader context of substantive social research.


2014 ICPSR Summer Program Scholarships
The ICPSR Summer Program offers several scholarships that provide a fee waiver to one or both of the Summer Program’s four-week sessions. For the following scholarship, the deadline to submit application materials is April 15, 2014.

Scholarship for Education Research: For North American Ph.D. students in education. The applicant’s research interests must include the acquisition of quantitative skills in order to execute an empirical (i.e., data-based) dissertation within an education-related field.

Dates and Locations
Many of the lectures and workshops are presented in two four-week sessions held on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The first session runs from June 23–July 18, 2014. The second session runs from July 21–August 15, 2014.

From May through August, there are also almost 40 three- to five-day workshops on both statistical and substantive topics. Many of these short workshops take place in Ann Arbor, but several are held in other locations, including Amherst, MA; Berkeley, CA; Boulder, CO; Chapel Hill, NC; Manhattan, NY; and Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

CBS Sunday Morning, The Baltimore Sun, and the Baltimore Jewish Times have run features on Project Mah Jongg, now appearing at the Jewish Museum of Maryland and is on view in Baltimore through June 29, 2014.. 

The show, which originated at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, NYC has also garnered notice in the New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The LA Times. The show has travelled to Portland, Cleveland, LA, Miami Beach, Atlanta, and will continue on to San Francisco this summer.

CIRCA Director Timothy Nohe produced sound designs for three "Muji" players, documenting games in Chinatown and the Upper East Side. The sound work was invited by curator Melissa Martens Yaverbaum. Abbot Miller, a partner at Pentagram Design, designed the exhibit to highlight the intriguing objects and imagery surrounding the game. Original works by fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, and renowned illustrators Maira Kalman, Christoph Niemann, and Bruce McCall pay homage to the influence mah jongg has had on design and contemporary artists. The exhibition's sumptuous companion publication "Mah Jongg: Crak, Bam, Dot," was edited by Abbott Miller and Patsy Tarr, and published by twice books.
