Dr. Craig Saper workshop on Multimodal Scholarship St. Mary's College Dr. Saper recently gave a workshop at St. Mary’s College on Multimodal Scholarship titled Media's Impact on Scholarship, Creative Activity, and New Forms of Knowledge: From Folkvines to Readies in Multiple Modes on Monday, March 31st. This presentation was part of St. Mary’s College’s Spring Digital Culture Series in their Art and Art history Department. For more information about this program and its events, click here.

In addition to being a Professor and the Director of the LLC program here at UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Saper is the author of Intimate Bureaucracies (2012), Networked Art (2001), Artificial Mythologies (1997), among other titles. He has published widely on Fluxus (art movement which included Yoko Ono) and visual poetry. He also serves as the Reviews Editor and "Blog Report" columnist for Rhizomes. Ph.D. stipend award is offered on an open, merit and competitive basis to a Ph.D. student who has completed at least the first year of Ph.D. studies at a recognized university, has at least two more years to finalize a doctoral thesis and made progress in formulating a Ph.D. research topic that is either focused entirely on civil resistance or might benefit from that focus.

Prospective applicants must submit their Ph.D. thesis proposals with a clear explanation of the ideas that underline their research on civil resistance and provide information on how the stipend will help advance the research and knowledge in field of civil resistance studies.


Eligibility
Ph.D. students who have completed at least the first year of the Ph.D. studies at a recognized university and have at least two more years to finalize their doctoral dissertations are encouraged to apply. The Ph.D. thesis or its important parts must be relevant to civil resistance studies.

How to Apply
Applicants need to fill out the online application form, submit their Ph.D. thesis proposals with a clear explanation of the ideas that underline the research on civil resistance and clarification on how the stipend will help advance the research on civil resistance as part of the Ph.D. thesis writing, CVs, copies of their Ph.D. transcripts with grades and a writing sample.

Application Deadline
The deadline for application submissions is May 9, 2014. The length of the review process will be determined by the number of applications, though decisions should be made four-five weeks after the deadline.
Stipend distribution

The Ph.D. stipend will be disbursed in four equal installments. The installments will be made based on an agreed-upon schedule for the submissions of relevant thesis chapter(s) in the 18 months after the award is announced. Each next installment will be made contingent upon positive evaluation of the submitted work and satisfactory progress toward the dissertation's completion.

OVERVIEW:

The Maryland Department of the Environment is seeking a student intern to work on environmental justice (EJ) initiatives related to quality communication with communities and other stakeholders. The primary objectives are (1) to assist a student to complement his/her academic career with work-place experience, (2) to formulate a pilot program focused on environmental justice and community outreach, (3) develop and edit communication pieces regarding EJ and communities, and (4) assist with upkeep of the EJ portion of the MDE website. 

INTERNSHIP: 

The internship will be an unpaid, credit bearing academic/work related experience. The intern is expected to work at least 10 hours a week on the project over the course of the semester. 

PROJECT GOALS: 

MDE would like an intern to research and develop a community outreach tool for communities affected by various environmental issues. 

1. Pilot Project: This will be a pilot project implemented in a few communities. The first phase of this project will be to research how different communities prefer to receive information, i.e. community meetings, community newsletters, etc. The second stage of the project will focus on consolidating and analyzing this research while developing a tool for surveying communities about their interests and preferred methods of communication. In the third stage of the project, the student will implement the survey tool to determine the preferences of the various pilot communities and then analyze the results. Ultimately, the Department would like to be able to use this tool repeatedly as communities express interest in projects and/or issues of concern.

2. Assist the Office of Environmental Justice & the Office of Communications in editing, drafting, and revising brochures for stakeholders about MDE programs and processes as it relates to EJ. 

3. Attend policy meetings to observe and recommend ways to address and improve EJ policy at the Department. 

SUPERVISION: 

This internship would primarily be supervised by the Environmental Justice Coordinator at MDE; however, the student would also interact and work with the Air and Radiation Management Administration at MDE, the Office of Communications at MDE, and the Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities (CEJSC).

This seminar course will combine readings, written assignments and class discussions in order to help students explore the interface between science and spiritual beliefs. Classes will consider examples and insights from multiple disciplines, including biology, psychology, mathematics, philosophy, music, art, history and more. This course will not debate religion versus science; instead it will explore a variety of different relationships that other minds have advocated over the years.  In particular, the course will NOT seek to introduce any one particular view as correct: instead, students will be encouraged to develop a scholarly context for their own, personal view of the relationship between these two ways of experiencing our place within reality.
