Short-Term Residential Fellowship Indiana University African Studies Collections Call for Proposals

Indiana University’s African Studies Program invites applications for a short-term residency to conduct research in IU’s Libraries/African Studies Collections. Indiana University’s African Studies Collection ranks among the top tier of such collections in the U.S. It comprises more than 150,000 volumes of monographs and over 700 serial subscriptions as well as materials in other formats (e.g. posters, slides, film/video, audio tapes, etc). The focus of the collection is on the humanities and social sciences, supporting a wide range of students and faculty in such departments as history, anthropology, fine arts, theatre & drama, literature, folklore, ethnomusicology, communication and culture, linguistics, religious studies, education, political science, business, economics, journalism, and applied health science.

This residency is intended for faculty members at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or at other U.S. colleges / universities with limited Africa collections, to conduct research in Indiana University’s libraries and special collections in support of curriculum development or publications. The successful applicant will receive an award that covers domestic travel, accommodations in Bloomington, and a modest per diem for up to two weeks of research. The award will cover expenses up to a maximum of $2,000 and must be used before August 01, 2014. The recipient is expected to reside in Bloomington during the period of her/his award.

Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. degree and be employed at a U.S. college/university. Applicants are asked to submit a curriculum vitae and a brief proposal. The deadline for applications is March 5, 2014. Awards will be announced by March 25, 2014.

Students will use various resources in a Promethean-equipped classroom to explore environmental issues relevant to the lives of Maryland students, then incorporate arts-based strategies into multimedia public service announcements (PSAs). Participants will find links between these activities and Common Core Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Maryland’s Environmental Education Standards.  Cameras will be provided, or you may use your own smart phone to create a digital documentation of your PSA.

Scott Morgan, President of The Morgan Group of Washington, DC, provides media training and public speaking tips to a variety of organizations, and universities. Morgan is a Senior Associate of the Abshire Inamori Leadership Academy, at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in DC.

Scott Morgan has been teaching communication skills since 1994. His clients have included the National Institutes of Health, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, Merck, Celgene, the Environmental Protection Agency, City of Hope Cancer Center, and Harvard Medical school, as well as several universities including Cornell, Duke, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Universities of Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North Carolina. He has 30 years of broadcast experience and has taught media and communication strategy at several think tanks in the Washington area, including the Brookings Institution, the Center for a New American Security, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and the World Resources Institute. Morgan graduated with honors from the University of California at Davis and is the coauthor of Speaking about Science: A Manual for Creating Clear Presentations (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

Interdisciplinary Studies at UMBC invites undergraduate students of engineering, visual arts, environmental science, journalism, and interdisciplinary studies to submit a design proposal for a kinetic sculpture (a bicycle powered work of art).

 

Interdisciplinary Studies will offer a $250 prize to the winning design for a kinetic sculpture that will be built by a UMBC team of students and entered into the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race. To explore themes of sustainability, the working title for the kinetic sculpture is the “Trashmonster Upcycle.” Our goal is to put the notion of upcycling ("converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value") into motion by collecting discarded materials (also known as trash) that could be used as part of a bicycle powered sculpture.

4. How will the vehicle navigate roads, water, and mud?

Understanding Culture and Politics in Ghana
July 6 – August 4, 2014

THE PROGRAM
The UMBC Department of Africana Studies’ 2014 Summer Study Abroad Program to Ghana, West Africa, to be held July 6 – August 4, will explore the diverse and unique heritage of Ghana. Combining classroom, laboratory, and field-based academic study, intense language lessons, supervised intercultural exchanges with Ghanaian governmental and non-governmental officials, and guided-sightseeing activities to select historical and cultural sites, this four-week program will enable participants to learn about Ghana’s cultural, political, and economic heritage and the consequent impact of this heritage on the region and the continent. Participants will also learn about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the African anti-colonialism movement, Ghana’s experiences with different political systems, the Akan Twi language system, and the intersections of culture, language, religion, and regionalism within the Ghanaian political and economic structure.

Program Cost: $3,872*

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Applicants must 1) complete an application form, 2) submit two letters of reference, and 3) submit documentation attesting to their health and physical abilities. Application forms are available from the Department of Africana Studies. A deposit of $300 and completed applications are due by March 10, 2014. Make check or money order payable to UMBC. Notifications of interviews will be made by March 11th and conclude by March 17th. The balance is due May 20, 2014. Early application is encouraged. At all times, participants will be selected without regard to race, gender, color, national origin, age, or handicapping condition.

*The program cost is per person, based on double-occupancy. This price includes 4-credits of tuition, roundtrip international airfare, visa fees, emergency health insurance, lodging (all rooms with private bath), tours and site visits, meals, all transfers and baggage handling, security, hotel taxes and service charges, gratuities, seminar lectures, cultural and experiential learning activities, course materials and weekend pre-departure sessions, in-country farewell dinner, identification cards for library access, and seminar-style language instruction. The price does not include required immunizations and vaccinations, passport fees, or personal spending money.

Additional Information
Participants will earn 4 credits of AFST 495 (Field Research in Africana Studies).

We especially encourage applications from current K-12 educators in Maryland, from undergraduates and graduate students with an interest in becoming K-16 educators, and others currently enrolled in teacher certification programs.

Current Maryland K-12 teachers may be eligible for funding from their local school districts.
