Facing Race: A National Conference is presented by Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation. A unique collaborative space for racial justice movement making, Facing Race is the largest multiracial, inter-generational gathering for organizers, educators, creatives and other leaders.
Facing Race 2014 will be held in Dallas, Texas on November 13-15, 2014. In addition to highlighting a Southern perspective for Facing Race attendees, the 2014 conference will offer the local community unprecedented access to information and resources on racial equity. Previous Facing Race National Conferences have been held in Baltimore, Berkeley, Chicago, Oakland and New York.
Submit a proposal to be featured in one of our three conference tracks: 1) organizing and advocacy, 2) research and policy, and 3) arts, media and culture. Breakout Session proposals must be submitted by Friday January 24.

Description: An introduction to the study of geopolitics and the state of contemporarygeopolitics. Geopolitics is the study of power relations between empires and states. It explores the meaning, contestation, construction, and maintenance of the political organization of space. The course traces the evolution of geopolitical thought from Mahan and Mackinder through Kennan and up to modern popular writers such as Robert Kaplan, who argues that a nation’s position on the world map is a primary determinant of conflict. We will also examine an emerging critical form of geopolitics, which looks at the social construction of political spaces, exposes the material interests involved in the narratives used to explain these spaces, and explores the spatial construction of social identity.
Anthony T. Browder is an author, publisher, cultural historian, artist, and an educational consultant. He is a graduate of Howard University’s College of Fine Arts and has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Africa, Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and Europe, on issues related to African and African American History and Culture.
Mr. Browder is the founder and director of IKG Cultural Resources and has devoted 33 years researching ancient Egyptian history, science, philosophy and culture.
He has traveled to Egypt 49 times since 1980 and is currently director of the ASA Restoration Projectwhich is funding the excavation and restoration of the 25th dynasty tomb of Karakhamun in Luxor, Egypt.
Browder is the first African American to fund and coordinate an archeological dig in Egypt and has lead five archeological missions to Egypt since 2009. His archeological work in Egypt has been acknowledged by former President Mohamed Morsi, the Minister of Tourism and various Ministers of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Mr. Browder’s three decades of study have lead him to the conclusion that ancient Africans were the architects of civilization and developed the rudiments of what has become the scientific, religious, and philosophical backbone of mankind. It is from this framework that IKG has concentrated its research and disseminated its findings.
Through IKG, Mr. Browder sponsors lectures, seminars, cultural field trips of Washington, D.C., publishes his research, and has conducted study tours to Egypt, West Africa, South Africa and Mexico since 1987. He has been featured in 5 documentaries and has produced dozens of DVD’s of his numerous lectures.
He is the author of six publications (including the best sellers, From the Browder File and Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization) and the co-author of four publications, including two written with his daughter, Atlantis Tye.
All of Mr. Browder’s publications, DVD’s and documentaries are currently being used in classrooms around the world.
“Tony” describes himself as a chronicler of facts and information relative to the positive portrayal of the worldwide African experience.

Student Association, Predicate aims to establish a forum for graduate students to
share their research and writing: a place to work with other developing
scholars.
For this year’s issue, we invite submissions that investigate the act of reacting. What forms can a reaction take? How do time or historical context shape reactions to literature or events? How can a reaction impact the issue or event to which it responds? What motivates a reaction? Is reacting always a political act?
We encourage papers from all humanities disciplines including, but not limited to, philosophy, history, art history, theology, literature, women’s and gender studies, ethnic studies, and LGBTQ studies.
Submissions should be sent as Word document email attachments to Maria Vrcek (mev37@georgetown.edu) no later than 11:59 p.m. on February 14, 2014. All submissions should utilize Chicago style citation. Please do not include your name in the text of the paper. In the body of your email, include your name, your program affiliation, the title of your paper, and the subject of your paper. Papers should not exceed 6,000 words. Authors will be notified of acceptance and, if appropriate, suggestions for revision by the middle of March.
AFST Majors and Minors: PAID Spring Internships Available with MD Legislators
Maryland state legislators and state legislative candidates continue to
contact POLI and AFST staff about internship opportunities during the legislative session (January-April 2014) or on their campaigns (now until primary election in June or general election in November).
Through a new collaboration, AFST will offer up to three paid internships for AFST majors/minors interested in working for members of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. Juniors and seniors with GPAs of 3.0 and higher may be eligible for academic credit for such internships through the POLI internship program (requires spring enrollment in POLI 448) or through the AFST internship program (requires spring enrollment in AFST 490 for six credits).
The stipends are modest but the experience is invaluable. If interested, please contact Dr. King-Meadows (tkingmea@umbc.edu) or Dr. Hussey (lhussey@umbc.edu) as soon as possible.
