Guest Lecture - Dr. Yunwoo Song, "Why Be Moral?" 

Asian Studies is pleased to welcome American University's Dr. Yunwoo Song to the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery for a special lecture about Confucian influences and thoughts on morality.

Spring 2024 Advising and Registration are Here!

The Spring 2024 schedule is available online, and advising is happening now! Undergraduate students can begin registering for classes as early as tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct 31). 

Have you had your advising appointment yet? Check out our Advising Guide for Asian Studies students to make sure you're ready to register as soon as possible - signing up for classes early is the best way to make sure you have a seat in popular offerings, or to get a spot in that one class you might still need before you graduate!

The Associate Director will assist the Director in strategic decision making, shaping CS3 goals, and developing CS3 initiatives. The Associate Director will also be responsible for serving in the Director's place should the Director be unable to attend various CS3 activities or programs, or at university events or meetings. 

The appointment would begin July 1, 2024.

Duties for the Associate Director include:

  1. Work with the Center Director and Coordinator to schedule, coordinate, facilitate, and attend CS3 events, trainings, and workshops, including organizing the biennial Social Science Faculty Publications celebration, the annual Social Science Alumni Panel, and the Social Sciences Forum Distinguished Lecture series.
  2. Review applications for CS3 faculty summer fellowships and small research grants to support Center award decisions.
  3. Review applications and reports of interdisciplinary CS3 faculty working groups.
  4. Work with the Center Director, Coordinator, and CS3 Advisory Board to plan, develop, and implement other CS3 programming for students and faculty as needed.
  5. Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and monthly board meetings, participate in strategic planning and budgeting.
  6. Attend monthly CAHSS chairs and directors' meetings in the Director's place as needed.
  7. Assist in evaluating CS3 activities and writing the Center's annual report.
Eligibility: Tenure track faculty with expertise in social science fields (minimum: advanced assistant professor; tenured preferred). Preference will be given to applicants who have been formally involved with CS3, such as service on the CS3 Advisory Board or participation in other Center programs or initiatives.

Dorsey is an artist and National Board-Certified Educator, serving as an elementary vocal/general music teacher in Prince George's County Public Schools. He also currently teaches music education classes at UMBC. 

Dorsey engages students of varying ages to investigate life-based concepts through a creative process. His impact can be seen throughout the state, having facilitated courses on cultivating creativity with UMBC, Loyola University Maryland, University of Maryland, College Park, and Towson University, as well as leading collaborative curriculum/ project planning with Prince George's, Queen Anne's, and Baltimore City Public Schools.

Speaker Information:

Lauren Clay, PhD, MPH, Assoc Prof & Chair, UMBC Dept EHS

Lauren Clay is a disaster scientist and public health researcher. Her research focuses on individual, household, and community recovery from disasters. She has studied Hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, and Florence, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the 2013 Moore, OK tornadoes, and the Camp Fire among other disasters and public health emergencies. Her expertise is in disaster disruption to the local food environment and food insecurity. Currently, she has several studies underway examining long-term recovery and public health impacts from Hurricane Katrina, food insecurity following Hurricane Florence and the Camp Fire, and several studies looking at food access and security during the COVID-19 pandemic.
