Apply for a Dresher Center Faculty Research Fellowship
Applications for 2018 Residential Fellowships due on May 1st
Dresher Center Faculty Research Fellowship applications for Spring 2018 are due May 1, 2017.
The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Residential Faculty Research Fellowships for spring 2018. Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Dresher Center Research Fellows will reside at least one day a week in the Dresher Center and receive release from teaching (up to two course releases) in order to work on a significant humanities research project or the training necessary to embark on such a project. Faculty wishing to develop expertise in a new field or discipline towards a future project are also encouraged to apply. Each fellow will have the use of a private office in the Dresher Center and will be awarded $500 to hire an undergraduate research assistant (junior or senior) for the semester.
All full-time, tenured and tenure-track faculty members pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are welcome to submit a proposal. Applications are especially encouraged from, but not limited to, full-time faculty with appointments in departments and programs with a humanities focus. Two fellowships are available. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board, with decisions by mid-July 2017.

ACLS supports scholars in the humanities and social sciences at all career stages through a range of fellowship and grant programs. In this session, ACLS program officer Rachel Bernard will share information about ACLS's programs and offer tips for strong applications. The workshop will also include a mock peer-review panel with ample opportunity for discussion.
Humanities Proposal-Writing Session

UMBC faculty are invited to participate in a hands-on proposal-writing session with expert facilitator, Carole Sargent. Faculty will learn strategies for developing effective humanities grant and book proposals and workshop a draft proposal for their own research projects. Participants should prepare a 300-word draft project description to work on during the session.
About the Presenters
Rachel Bernard is a Program Officer at ACLS in the Office of Fellowship and Public Programs. She completed her Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2012.
Carole Sargent is the founding Director of the Office of Scholarly Publications at Georgetown University and of Academic Authors, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting faculty in scholarly publishing and grant submission. She has broad experience creating workshops in consultation with national funding organizations. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and has published widely in 18th-century literary history.

The Dresher Center offers two residential Graduate Student Fellowships that are open to all UMBC doctoral and master’s level students working on humanities-related research projects culminating in a dissertation or master’s thesis. Fellowships will be awarded for the fall 2017 semester.

Apply by April 1, 2017 for groups beginning in Fall 2017
The Dresher Center invites proposals for new Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities. Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups are collaborative, interdisciplinary communities of scholars working on humanities projects, research concerns, or matters of public interest. The Dresher Center provides support for the formation of these groups in an effort to promote intellectual exchange and support research activity in the humanities among scholars across campus. Working groups meet regularly and can use their funds to travel to sites or archives, host speakers, explore technologies, create new resources or materials, or other similar activities.
Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. While faculty may come from any UMBC department, priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.
Fundable activities include travel to sites or archives, speaker presentations, use/purchase of technology, creation of resources or materials, and support for regular meetings or workshops, etc.
Current Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups may also apply for continuation funding (same deadlines).
For best consideration, apply by April 1, 2017 for groups beginning in fall 2017.

Description
From the New Culture Movement of 1917 to World War
II, from literary journals to rock concerts, from self-expression to social
engagement, poetry has played an integral role in remaking modern Chinese life.
In this course, you will study the works of key poets, musicians, and
revolutionaries who shaped the development of modern Chinese culture and
history in the 20th century. Examining a range of materials such as
poems, song lyrics, music (folk, classical, jazz, pop, rock, punk, hip hop),
films, and scholarly essays, you will learn about modern Chinese lyrical
culture as it evolved in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and its relationship with
national and regional identities. While this course is designed for students
with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese or Chinese culture, MLL 190, 191,
230 or 301 is recommended. Since this is an MLL course, all class discussions, assignments,
and materials will be in English. Poems will be available in Chinese for those
interested in reading the original.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this
course, you will be able to: (1) analyze modern Chinese poems using technical terms;
(2) interpret modern Chinese poetry and music in their historical contexts; (3)
recall major developments in modern Chinese history in the 20th century; and (4)
improve your ability to think critically and write academic papers on literary
topics. You are expected to work toward these goals, participate in all
classroom activities, and complete all assignments in a timely manner.
