Dresher Center - Fall Humanities Forum Fall 2015 events sponsored by the Dresher Center

Each semester, the Dresher Center for the Humanities promotes a series of events of outmost importance for the field of the Humanities and the Social Sciences. There is a great line-up of events for the Fall semester (see document attached to this announcement). 

Also, the Dresher Center wants to remind the LLC community about the new video resource in the Dresher's home page. This presentation will highlight a new publishing project in the works: Vega, an academic publishing platform supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Building on 15 years as editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy, Dr. Ball will discuss how publishing multimedia scholarship requires different kinds of infrastructure than scholars, editors, and publishers are used to with print-based publishing. Vega incorporates newer publishing processes, such as collaborative authoring, open peer review, and design editing, as well as newer products, such as media-rich articles and data sets.

Ball will talk about the opportunities and challenges of composing, editing, publishing, and evaluating scholarship in the 21st century, primarily when it takes nontraditional, digital forms.

Cheryl E. Ball is Associate Professor of Digital Publishing Studies at West Virginia University. She teaches classes in editing, multimedia authoring, and digital publishing and teaches occasional seminars on academic literacies at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

The UMBC Dresher Center Humanities Forum offers a program of events that illustrate the richness of contemporary work in philosophy, history, culture, language, literature and the arts. The Forum showcases the many connections that bring together the humanities, the social sciences and the sciences.

The Humanities and Civic Engagement

In 2014-15, the Humanities Forum will highlight “The Humanities and Civic Engagement.” Many of the Forum events address matters of identity and civic belonging, questions of morality and honor in public life, and issues of human rights in an age of globalization. These events shine a light on ways that humanities research and teaching promote civic citizenship and social engagement.

Call for Papers

The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Thirteenth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. The Humanities Conference will be held 17-19 June 2015 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplines and perspectives and encourage faculty and students to jointly submit proposals, discussing The Humanities through one of the following themes:

Conference Themes

2015 Special Focus

In addition to the annual themes, the conference will address the special focus–From 'Digital Humanities' to a Humanities of the Digital–through keynote speakers, garden sessions, workshops, and parallel sessions that examine the following topics:
  • The ‘digital’ as a social imaginary: exploring historical continuities and ruptures in social and cultural practices in the era of digital cultures.
  • The digital within the humanities: new methods and tools for documentation, research, and representation.
  • The political economy of digital humanities: e-learning, e-publishing, and the reframing of disciplines and institutions.
  • Big data and little data; negotiating the public and the private.
  • Open access and open cultures: developing sustainable knowledge ecologies.
  • Adapting methodologies and focus in the digital age: has the dust settled on the ‘digital humanities’?
  • From the digital humanities, to a humanities of the digital; rebuilding the humanities in the shadow of the digital, and developing a humanities of the digital.
Proposal Submissions and Deadlines

The current review period closing date for the latest round of submissions to the Call for Papers (a title and short abstract) is 4 December 2014. Please visit our website for more information on submitting your proposal, future deadlines, and registering for the conference.
