CFP: 38th Graduate Research Conference at UMBC
The 38th Annual Graduate Research Conference (GRC) will be held on March 23, 2016. The GRC is a collaborative effort of the Graduate Student Association (GSA), the Office of Graduate Student Life (OGSL), and the GSA Senate. The 2016 GRC is a campus wide event which provides a platform for graduate students, across all disciplines, to come together to share their research, network professionally, and engage in intellectual discussions on a multifarious scale. For the first time, GRC will have a three-minute thesis competition (3MT), to know more about 3MT please visit http://threeminutethesis.org/.

This year’s conference will also feature a keynote panel, professional development workshop, research information fair, and a three minute thesis competition.

All graduate students at any stage of their graduate work are invited to deliver their oral presentation, poster presentation, artist talk, performance and media presentation, or work in progress. All presentation formats are welcome!

The abstract submission deadline is January 22, 2016.

The Obama Effect 2.0 Conference

His accolades include a Nobel Peace Prize, the Dodd-Frank (Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection) Act, the Affordable Health Care Act (“Obamacare”), the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Defense of Marriage Act rendered unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. His detractors suggest his Middle East policies are ineffective, he is abusive of Executive Orders, and has failed to devise a reasonable solution for the closure of Guantanamo Bay, as well as prosecute the masterminds of the 2008 financial crash. The scope of these noteworthy events are just a part of the "effect" of Barack Obama during his near-complete two terms as the 44th President of the United States. Since stepping into the national political spotlight at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, then-Senator Barack Obama and reactions to his eventual ascendancy to the White House as president have confounded conventional wisdom. What many sensed as unique, different, refreshing and forward thinking about Mr. Obama, we dubbed “The Obama Effect.” And as his time in office comes to a close, it is imperative for scholars and professionals in a wide variety of disciplines to reflect upon this presidency’s effect and impact on: American and global public opinion; party politics; voter participation; media representations; international relations; religious discourses; race and the American police state; nationality and patriotism; and constructions of racial, sexual, and gender identities.

We invite presentation proposals for The Obama Effect 2.0 Conference. This conference is a follow-up to our event of the same name held at the University of Minnesota in 2008, where we first explored the “Obama Effect” ”--- the impact his rise to power already had upon history, upon America, and upon the world.  This conference is intended to begin considering these "effects," short and long term, expected and unexpected, of President Obama's two-term tenure. We invite papers from scholars, professionals, and community organizers working from different perspectives on the phenomenon of President Obama’s time in the White House. Our goal is to create a conference that will showcase various and interdisciplinary approaches to the “Obama Effect. This notion also extends to the racialized and gendered narratives of First Lady Michelle Obama who has made strides and created waves that could also be characterized as having an “effect.” The conference will provide participants with a multi-faceted view of the past eight years and the significance that the Obama Era has had on our sense of politics, national identity, media, and public opinion.

Submissions from academic fields such as: history, media studies, journalism, communication studies, political science, philosophy, social justice, African American Studies, ethnic studies, American Studies, sociology, and law are welcome.  Essays from professional journalists, political consultants, community organizers, and others are also desired. Additionally, we want to encourage critical performance pieces that illuminate the “Obama Effect” via visual or performance art, media and new media production.
What will be the lasting impacts of the Obama Administration --an Executive Branch led for the first time in American history by a person of color? How will we think about the Presidency, campaign methods and ethics, and the “national conversation about race?” How has the emergence of social movements such as #BlackLivesMatter, transgender rights, gay marriage, and the Dreamers been part of --or a challenge to--the Obama Era?  What should we consider his legacy in foreign policy, given the intractability of the situations in Iraq, Israel, and Afghanistan, and dismay over big trade deals like TPP?  How might the Obama team’s electoral strategies impact the 2016 presidential campaigns (and candidates)? We are obliged to look back to distant histories as well as scrutinize recent phenomena.  At the same time, we should ponder what changes we might expect, and what backlash may surge, as President Obama leaves office.

Submissions should be completed papers (6000-7000 words) or extended abstracts (250-500 words) for works in progress.  Works in progress should provide evidence that the paper and/or performance piece will be completed by the date of the conference. Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2016.

In today’s media saturated and ever-connected society, we are barraged with a daily dose of conflict.  The very nature of most media messages is one of duality and division.  We see this pattern particularly in news coverage of politics, crime, and social unrest as well as in the increasing economic divide in the United States.  In addition, we face conflict on a daily basis within our own families, workplaces, and social spaces. As communications scholars, practitioners, and educators how best can we use our knowledge and practice to mediate conflict?  How can we impart the values of conflict resolution in our teaching and employ the concept in our lives?

The 31st Annual Convention of the Maryland Communication Association invites you to join us on Friday November 13th and Saturday November 14th at Bowie State University, as we explore this topic through panel discussions, paper presentations, poster sessions, and guest speakers.

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, posters, or colloquia are invited for the Fourteenth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. Proposals are invited that address the humanities through one of the following categories:


2016 SPECIAL FOCUS: 'Nature at the Crossroads: New Directions for the Humanities in the Age of the Anthropocene'

Virtual Presentations

If you are unable to attend the conference in person, you may present in a Virtual Poster session or a Virtual Lightning Talk. Virtual sessions enable participants to present work to a body of peers and to engage with colleagues from afar. As a virtual participant, presenters are scheduled in the formal program, have access to select conference content, can submit an article for peer review and possible publication, may upload an online presentation, and can enjoy Annual Membership to the community and subscriber access to the New Directions in the Humanities Collection.

New Directions in the Humanities Collection

All presenters are invited to submit written articles for publication to the fully refereed New Directions in the Humanities Collection. Articles may be submitted by in-person and virtual participants as well as community members.

(Un)Masking Masculinities:
Constructing and Deconstructing Representations of Masculinities

We all incorporate into our individual identities features of various culturally gender constructed identities. In particular, children and others struggling to come to terms with their sexuality may well be confused by the many and often conflicting representations of gender that they encounter throughout the broader culture. How are these "masks" of gender identity constructed? Which masks distort or corrupt the individual who wears them? Do some masks actually elevate the individual and help him become increasingly healthy and productive?

The construction and effects of gender identity are best approached through collaborative efforts. Scholars from all academic disciplines need to find ways to design their research projects so that practitioners find the results of that research useful, and practitioners need to find ways to help scholars understand and investigate the range of issues they encounter in their work. Furthermore, scholars from every discipline-the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences-need to find ways to support each other in their efforts to discuss, examine, and/or deconstruct existing definitions of masculinity or to begin to construct new definitions.

The Inaugural International Conference on National Language Policy and Multilingual Education

As part of the UNICEF/University of Melbourne Language, Education and Social Cohesion project, a major International conference on language planning and multilingual education is being held at the University of Mandalay, Myanmar on February 7-9, 2016. The organisers invite scholars, practitioners, language and cultural groups, school and university planners to submit abstracts on multilingual education, language policy, social cohesion, and peacebuilding themes to participate in this inaugural conference. The organisers look forward to your participation in this exciting opportunity to deepen understanding, share experiences and discuss progress in language policy and multilingual education.

Distinguished international and local speakers will present papers on critical issues and developments. Official representatives from across Southeast Asia will report on the state of multilingual education and language policy in diverse countries. In addition to the plenary speakers, the conference invites local actors including advocacy representatives, government officials, teachers, community members, and academics to present on any aspect of multilingual language policy and its implications in Southeast Asia and more widely.

The program in Culture, Language and Social Practice (CLASP) at the University of Colorado at Boulder is pleased to invite submissions to its graduate-student-run interdisciplinary conference. Abstracts for 20 minute papers covering topics in various areas of sociocultural linguistics are invited and are due by June 30th, 2015. We encourage papers that focus on the broad connections between language, culture and society and are grounded in empirical research. Examples of possible frameworks or analytic traditions may include, but are not limited to:

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please email a 500 word abstract to abstract.clasp2015@gmail.com by June 30th, 2015. The conference this year will include a paper competition for graduate students (see details below). The abstract should be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF format and should contain NO information identifying the author(s) of the paper. Abstracts are evaluated on an anonymous basis (before preparing your submission, you might want to consult these annotated model abstracts:http://www.linguisticsociety.org/resource/model-abstracts). In the body of the email, please include the following information:
 
** Name(s) of author(s)
** University or other affiliation(s) of the author(s)
** Email address(es) of the author(s)
** Title of proposed paper
** 3-5 keywords
** Equipment requirements
** Any additional comments
 
Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent via email by August, 15th, 2015.
 
STUDENT PLENARY COMPETITION

This year we will promote a competition for the best Graduate Student Paper in Culture, Language, and Social Practice. The winner of this competition will have their name mentioned in the official conference program and will be offered a student plenary spot at the conference. This student plenary will be approximately 45 minutes and will provide an opportunity for the winner to share their research in more depth than a typical presentation slot. Note however that the plenary spot is a potential honor and depends on the quality of submissions received.

For consideration in the competition for the student plenary, authors (graduate students only) should submit a paper of up to 8,000 words plus references. Your submission email should indicate whether you would like to be considered for a regular conference presentation if you do not win the plenary spot.
Please email your (up to) 8,000 word-paper to abstract.clasp2015@gmail.com by June 15th, 2015. The paper should be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF format and should contain NO information identifying the author(s) of the paper.

At the Community College of Baltimore County our highest concern is for the empowerment, engagement, validation and success of our students. From our vantage point as educators one way that we help stimulate such agency is by setting goals for cultural responsiveness in every component and every level of our educational process. At our first conference on Culturally Responsive Teaching we brought together over 200 educators from various levels of education and shared information and best practices in culturally responsive teaching methods. At our second conference, we hope to continue and broaden that conversation with educators and students.

The Popular Culture/American Culture Association PCA/ACA has made a valiant effort to showcase the talents of many members. This has certainly been the case in regards those with literary interests. There has been no shortage of interest among organization members to share their work with others who harbor similar interests. This fall the Popular Culture/ American Culture Association is hosting their second writers’ workshop in Philadelphia, PA at Drexel University.

The workshop will be dedicated to exploring all areas of Popular Culture and American Culture. All workshop attendees will present their papers at Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture/American Culture Conference on Thursday, November 5th, 2015. Participants will then spend the next two days rewriting, critiquing, listening to other authors and participating in a workshop to turn those conference papers into publishable essays by Sunday, November 8th. Applicants who are selected to participate in the workshop will have their essays published with Intellect Publishers.

The cost of the workshop includes: registration, hotel accommodations and fees.

Please submit your conference papers and manuscripts that are no more than 6000 to 8000 words in length to Elwood Watson at watsone@etsu.edu. Submissions should be sent in Microsoft Word .doc/.docx format ONLY via e-mail attachments.
