Grad Students: Counseling Center Groups & Workshops Spring 2018
The Counseling Center has developed a series of workshops, and there are a few that the center wants to bring to the attention of graduate students. 
The "Graduate Student Support" group, in particular, was developed in response to graduate students' requests for a group to specifically address grad-level needs. Please take advantage of this group. If your schedule does not allow you to meet during the group's time, please contact Dr. Soonhee Lee at the Counseling Center, soonhee@umbc.edu to see if there might be some alternatives. Is graduate school in your future? The accelerated BA/MA program in Texts, Technologies, and Literature (TTL) here at UMBC is an excellent option worth considering if you are a sophomore or junior with a 3.0 minimum GPA (and a 3.5 GPA in English). This innovative program is designed for students who are considering an academic or teaching career as well as those entering a variety of other professions—ones that may involve communications, text production and analysis, and digital media. It also enables students to further their understanding of literature and a broad array of other texts, including digital, academic, and those we use everyday. The BA/MA program is therefore an exciting opportunity to propel your English education, supported by a growing faculty of scholars and innovators in their field.

Through the TTL program, some of our students have gone on to pursue additional education in law school and doctoral programs across the country, eager to make a difference in communities near and far. Others have used the knowledge and skills gained through our program to publish and present at conferences, sharing their work with the world. This includes students such as:
  • Trevor Ruben, ’17, who published an article, “Why Micotransaction and Loot Boxes Are Destroying Games,” in Rolling Stone after completing a dynamic thesis on the unique aspects of decision design in video games
  • Joseph Nash, ’17, who presented a paper entitled, “Vipassana and The Pale King: Toward a More Useful Spiritual Vocabulary,” inspired by his research for his MA thesis on David Foster Wallace’s Pale King
  • Deborah Kadiri, ’16, who published a modified version of her portfolio work as “Social Media Meets Social Justice: The Role of the Hashtag in the Contemporary Conversation on Race” in Critical Insights: Civil Rights Literature, Past & Present (Salem 2017)

Reconstructing the Chesapeake's Past, an exhibit by INDS student Heather Mortimer, will be on display in the AOK Library Rotunda until Friday, February 23. 

We may not notice changes in the environment on a day-to-day basis, but records of the past can reveal dramatic shifts. Reconstructing the Chesapeake's Past presents some unconventional sources of historical environmental data.

The exhibit is part of an Undergraduate Research Award funded project exploring how exhibition design affects visitor engagement.

The start date for this position is August 1, 2018.

Description:
The Department welcomes applications from researchers or artist-researchers working in and across the fields of digital literary studies and new media (including but not limited to electronic literature, digital media art, video games, interactive fiction, digital poetics, and digital culture). Preference will be given to individuals with evidence of interdisciplinary practice that links the humanities, science, and technology, as well as demonstrated effectiveness at university level teaching, experience with program and curricular development in digital arts, and the ability to lead creative writing workshops and theoretically informed discussions about digital culture.

Teaching responsibilities include lower division major courses in digital media studies, and broadening upper-level offerings in digital methods, including coding for humanities projects and text or interactive methods (possible skills might include Python; topic modeling; ArcGIS; data visualization; JavaScript; HTML and CSS; or other server-side programming or creative platforms).


Required Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in English, or related disciplines, or terminal degree in appropriate field. Active scholarly, teaching, and artistic record in Digital Humanities, New Media Studies, or Digital Arts. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in digital arts and emerging media.
