Since I finished the program I have been in my home country, Colombia, holding a position of professor in public policy and director of an observatory in public policy. Last year I was kindly invited to give a talk in the department and the option to teach a summer class came up.
 
The School of Public Policy has approved a 2018 summer class which I will teach, if there is enough enrollment:  PUBL 610-01 Evaluation of Policy Interventions.    See the summer listings: www.summer.umbc.edu. Registration begins March 5, 2018.

The class will have a strong focus on the practical issues of evaluation. The class is based on the experience I gained working at The World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. I can say by experience, that this kind of issues are not taught in most public policy programs, but are pivotal when working in public policy issues and the public sector.
 
The class will be a hybrid class in the second summer session (early July – early August) for 4 weeks and 3 credits. We will meet in the classroom in the evenings  twice a week and other work will be online.
 
To have the class run, it is necessary to have at least 6 students. We´re sending this email  out again in order to have an idea if enough students are interested on taking the class.
 
I´m attaching the syllabus for you to have an idea of the contents of the class.

This year, the program will place up to 25 recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences in two-year term staff positions at partnering organizations in government and the nonprofit sector. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and receive professional mentoring. Fellows receive a stipend of $67,500 per year, individual health insurance, a relocation allowance, and up to $3,000 to be used toward professional development activities over the course of the fellowship term.

This initiative, made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, aims to expand the role of doctoral education in the United States by demonstrating that the capacities developed in the advanced study of the humanities have wide application, both within and beyond the academy. The Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program allows PhDs to gain valuable, career-building experience in fields such as public policy, development, conservation, arts and culture, and media.

ACLS seeks applications from recent PhDs who aspire to careers in administration, management, and public service by choice rather than circumstance. Competitive applicants will have been successful in both academic and extra-academic experiences.

In our 4th Annual Culturally Responsive Teaching conference we will bring together educators, students, community organizations and others from across the nation to share information, scholarship and best practices in culturally responsive teaching.

Our conference theme: CRT-L: The Intersection of Inclusion and Equity

This year our conference spans two days: Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20 with a pre-conference CRT Institute on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

Our day one keynote is Dr. Kimberly R. Moffitt, associate professor of American Studies and affiliate assistant professor in the Departments of Africana Studies and Language, Literacy and Culture Ph.D. program at UMBC. Dr. Moffitt’s research focuses on mediated representations of marginalized groups as well as the politicized nature of Black hair and the body. Day one will also include an Education Town Hall.

On Friday, the conference day begins at 8 AM, with a keynote address by Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, an American pedagogical theorist and teacher educator on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education and researcher at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. She is currently Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. Ladson-Billings is known for her groundbreaking work in the fields of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Critical Race Theory. Ladson-Billings work The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African-American Children is a significant text in the field of education. The day will also include panels, workshops, and student presentations.

Discourse analysis, or the study of language in use or language “beyond the sentence,” has long been recognized in linguistics as one of its most expansive, yet least defined, areas. It also transcends the field, fitting comfortably in disciplines as varied as communication studies, anthropology, sociology, and education (among many others). In recent years, discourse analysis, both in linguistics and in related fields, has grown exponentially, and that growth has been accompanied by a proliferation of approaches, each with its own foci, key concepts, methods, and touchstone publications. In 1994, Schiffrin identified the following approaches to discourse: Speech Act Theory, Interactional Sociolinguistics, The Ethnography of Communication, Pragmatics, Conversation Analysis, and Variation Analysis. To this list, we might now add Critical Discourse Analysis, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Mediated Discourse Analysis, Discursive Psychology, Visual Analysis, Cultural Discourse Analysis, Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis, and Action-Implicative Discourse Analysis, as well as multiple integrated approaches that are not easily classified.
 
GURT 2018 will bring together leading researchers from around the world and from various disciplines to take stock of current research and foster communication across approaches to discourse. In keeping with the spirit of diversity, we welcome abstracts for individual papers, posters, and colloquia that engage with the field’s various topical and theoretical foci, types and sources of data, methodological questions, and practical applications. Click here to view and download the conference schedule in PDF format.
