"On Wednesday, January 10, 2017, The Chancellor for the University of Maryland System released a letter in response to the court’s January 9, 2018 order to the federal government to indefinitely maintain the program known as Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, while legal challenges play out in the coming months.  On same day, a White House meeting with members of Congress promised some hope of legislation to permanently protect the hundreds of thousands of talented young people brought to the United States as children to continue to fully participate in, and contribute to, America's economy and society.”  In addition, over the past few months, the Director of Homeland Security announced that they would end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and El Salvador in July 2019 and September 2019. These decisions may leave community members with a bit of uncertainty with what may happen next.

The Mosaic's mission is to support students of all backgrounds and experiences on campus. To help this effort, please join us and other campus partners for a DACA and TPS info session to learn next steps and resources available.

We will also be joined by the founder of a volunteer group Sanctuary Streets Court Support. They will provide basic tools on how to accompany non-U.S. citizens to court to educate people on their rights, on legal resources that they could benefit from, and to help people flex their rights and document incidents if they are approached by ICE officials.

A facilitated Q&A period will follow the presentation.  Anonymous questions will be taken via notecards provided to all participants. If possible, time will be allotted for private, one-on-one consultation.

Save A Swipe Program

Have extra meals on your red card that you aren’t able to use? Students on a meal plan can now “save a swipe” to donate up to one meal a week to a shared pool. Those meals will be distributed to students in need through Counseling Services to be used in True Grit’s. 225 Block meal plans will have 16 meals deducted when you sign up. Recurring meals per week (Flexible 10, 14, Terrific 12, Savvy 16) will have one meal deducted each week. Ultimate Meal Plan holders will be donating their Friday lunch meal, students on the Ultimate will not be able to use a meal from 11:00 am - 4:00pm on Friday. Ultimate plan holders can still use their flex, retriever dollars or food funds. These meals are non-revocable once submitted. You may sign up during the beginning of the semester until the drop/add date (February 9th for Spring 2018).

UMBC's college access/readiness program, Path Before Me, is actively recruiting Spring volunteers.  We hope to have students placed in site schools by the end of February.  Volunteers will work in city schools, providing "college coaching" to high school juniors. 

Last semester, we had 13 student volunteers, who held over 100 individual coaching sessions with our high school students. Our youth feedback has been great--so we are excited for this Spring!

To begin tutoring, you will need to register through the Shriver Center.

Times:
Tuesdays 2:30p-5p (City College)
Wednesdays 2:30p-5p (Ben Franklin)
Thursdays 10a-1p (Poly)

Transportation:
One student from each school site group will responsible for driving, and will be eligible for a $500 stipend. This student can drive their own car, or the Shriver Van. Once we have our site groups, we will identify this coordinator, and establish our carpool system.

What you do:

"Coach" high school juniors around the SAT, the college application process and experience. You will meet either in small groups, or one on one with your mentee, at their schools. Snacks are provided, as well as mentoring materials, and an on site coordinator. 

You can volunteer at one or two sites, if interested. 

City--will focus very closely on SAT Prep. The school has material for us to use, which includes practice problems and building study skills. 

Ben Franklin and Poly--will focus more holistically on the college process, including essay writing, the application, the college experience, and the SAT.

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE 33rd ANNUAL INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE IN THE HUMANITIES
Intersectionalities/Interconnections/Liminalities

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the College of Arts and Humanities, and the University of West Georgia (UWG) invite you to celebrate the 33rd Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities, October 25-27, 2018. We welcome submissions from across the Humanities, Fine Arts, and the Social and Natural Sciences, dealing with INTERSECTIONALITIES/INTERCONNECTIONS/LIMINALITIES and the many relations and intersections between them. Papers, exhibits, performances and screenings may be submitted by scholars, graduate students, writers, artists, and performers.  

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Juanamaría Cordones-Cook

We encourage presentations about Intersectionalities/Interconnections/Liminalities on topics including, but not limited to:
  • Africana and Indigenous Studies
  • Literary studies of all periods, places, and times
  • African, Maghrib and Saharan Studies
  • Haitian studies
  • Filmography
  • Afro-Hispanic Studies
  • Opposing concepts such as: war/peace; love/hate; local/global; citizens/immigrants; etc.
  • Gender and Sexuality Studies
  • Imperialism and the Natural Sciences
  • Cultural studies
  • Migration, immigration and globalization
  • Feminism, queer and postcolonial theory
  • Linguistics, language and bilingualism
  • Eco-criticism
  • Memory, memorials, and commemoration
  • Study abroad
  • Anthropology
  • Geography and cartography
  • History, historiography, and historical revisions
  • The visual arts, including film studies, photography and graphic design
  • Environmental Studies and Urban Studies
  • Health and travel concerns     
  • Theatre, scenes and landscapes
  • Philosophy
  • Myths and mythology
  • Music, including musical history and theory
  • Economics, including commerce, marketing and trade
 
We especially welcome presentations about Haitian Studies to honor Dr. Flore Zephir. Dr. Albert Valdman, Director of the IU Creole Institute, will participate in this important recognition.

For individual proposals please submit a one-page, double-spaced abstract to Dr. Ana Zapata-Calle at azapata@westga.edu.  Include the presenter’s name, institution, email address, phone number, and any audio-visual or technical requirements for the presentation on a separate page. Papers in French, German and Spanish are welcomed as part of a pre-organized panel.

Submissions for panels of 3-4 presenters are especially welcome.  For panel proposals please submit the panel title, abstracts, and contact information for all speakers and for the panel moderator.  Proposals are due by May 15th, 2018.
