Curatorial Discussion
On Thursday, October 26 at 5 p.m., the CADVC presents a conversation with the curator, Fitsum Shebeshe, and Jessica Bell Brown, curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The discussion, moderated by Rhea Beckett, founding director at Black Artist Research Space, will focus on curatorial approaches to African diasporic experience and migration.

Fitsum Shebeshe is a curator and painter based in Baltimore and Washington D.C., and curator of States of Becoming, touring with Independent Curators International. Before moving to the United States in 2016, he was Assistant Curator at the National Museum of Ethiopia. In 2012, Shebeshe co-founded the 1957 Initiative to annually celebrate the liberation of African countries from colonialism through the arts.
Jessica Bell Brown is the Curator and Department Head for Contemporary Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Prior to the BMA she was the Consulting Curator at Gracie Mansion Conservancy in New York, and also held roles at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Creative Time. She is curator of the touring exhibition A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, co-organized with the Mississippi Museum of Art.
Rhea Beckett is an artist, curator, and arts administrator with an extensive performing and visual arts background. She co-founded the Black Artist Research Space (BARS), a Baltimore-based creative collective and incubator. Beckett has served as a Legislative Affairs and Grants Specialist at the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, where she played an integral role in supporting the creative community of Washington, D.C., through policy and grant-making. She has served as Registrar of the Howard University art collection and gallery manager of C. Grimaldis Gallery (Baltimore, MD). Rhea earned her BS in Art from Fisk University, where she sang soprano in the Grammy Award-winning Fisk Jubilee Singers. Rhea received her MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Rhea Beckett is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Congratulating Janet Magruder
On her Retirement!
Janet Magruder has worked at UMBC since 1992, serving in many areas before joining the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (formerly the Fine Arts Gallery) in 1999. She served as a Senator for the Classified Senate from 1995-2002, Chair for the Review Committee from 1995-1997, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Council University State System between 1998-2001. Her final day at UMBC will be September 29, 2023.
Janet has played many important roles for CADVC. She not only administered our business and financial matters, but mentored staff and student workers and advised artists, colleagues, vendors, and partners on CADVC's highly specialized business and administrative matters. She is patient, helpful, and kind. Student workers under her supervision would stop by the gallery to greet Janet or tell her that "working at CADVC doesn't feel like work." Janet's generous administrative care sustained our physical space, working conditions, and the experiences of staff, artists and audiences alike.
So many people at CADVC and in the wider University know and love Janet, and we will all miss her. Please join me in wishing her well in her next steps as she moves on from her storied career at UMBC.

CADVC Presents "States of Becoming"

CADVC announces
States of Becoming, an exhibition that
examines the dynamic forces of relocation, resettling, and assimilation that shape the artistic practices of a group of 17 contemporary African artists who have lived and worked in the United States within the last three decades and informs the discourse on identity construction within the African Diaspora.
The concept for "States of Becoming" evolved from curator Fitsum Shebeshe's lived experience following his 2016 move from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Baltimore, Maryland, and his subsequent firsthand knowledge of the weight of cultural assimilation. Confronted with a different society, Shebeshe encountered a wide range of existential questions that shaped his relationship to institutions and culture. Shebeshe also had the realization for the first time that he was viewed as belonging to a minority because of the color of his skin, and a newfound awareness of the profound impact Ethiopia's traditional and conservative culture had on his personal sense of individuality.
Artists featured in the exhibition include Gabriel C. Amadi-Emina, Kearra Amaya Gopee, Kibrom Araya, Nadia Ayari, Vamba Bility, Elshafei Dafalla, Masimba Hwati, Chido Johnson, Miatta Kawinzi, Dora King, Helina Metaferia, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Yvonne Osei, Kern Samuel, Amare Selfu, Tariku Shiferaw, and Yacine Tilala Fall.

Maleke Glee, director of Stable Gallery in Washington, D.C. Exhibition curator

CAHSS Colloquium: Resilience
Presented by the CAHSS Centers
The five research centers in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UMBC present this panel discussion to kick off the 2022-23 CAHSS Colloquium series, designed to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations among faculty, staff, and students to build intellectual community within and beyond individual research interests and curricula offerings. The topic for 2022-23 is resilience. Resilience is the ability of an entity, a person, an institution, a technology, a community, a natural environment, to anticipate, respond to, and recover from adverse conditions. The concept of resilience generally has a positive connotation, but it has also been criticized for placing on individuals and communities the burden to adapt to adverse and potentially unjust contexts. Adapting to adverse conditions may not necessarily improve them, so what is the relationship between resilience, resistance and social change? This panel will explore resilience from a variety of different perspectives. An open gallery and reception will follow the discussion.
This event is co-hosted by the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (CADVC), the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA), the Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3), the Dresher Center for the Humanities, and the Imaging Research Center (IRC) and is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
Ann Brodsky - facilitator
Anne Brodsky is Professor and Chair of Psychology. Her work focuses on resilience, psychological sense of community, immigration and displacement, and the role of communities in creating and resisting societal risks and oppressions, including violence, war, poverty, sexism, and racism.
Panelists:
Earl Brooks
Earl H. Brooks is an Assistant Professor of English, and his research interests include music, African-American rhetorical traditions, and composition. His forthcoming book, Resonance of Resistance, explores the rhetoric of Black music through the work of Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, and Mahalia Jackson.
Marcela Mellinger
Marcela Sarmiento Mellinger is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work where she teaches policy courses as well as an intimate partner violence elective. Her research interests include advocacy, intimate partner violence, and social work education.
Oletha DeVane
Oletha DeVane is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist who explores diverse political, social identities and cultural interpretations. Her work has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and in the United Arab Emirates and is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Born in Baltimore, DeVane received a B.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art and M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her solo exhibition Oletha Devane: Spectrum of Light and Spirit will be on view in the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture September 22 - December 17, 2022.
Dominic Nell
Dominic Nell is a photographer, activist, and farmer-chef focused on healing communities through various mediums. Nell is the founder of CityWeeds, a trauma-informed food business that strives to eliminate food deserts and improve the health, wellness, and independence of Baltimore City residents through the growing and selling of microgreens and cold-pressed juices. Nell's vision for CityWeeds is to feed and heal the community by growing food out of vacant lots.

Featuring nearly 100 artworks, this first retrospective of celebrated Maryland artist Oletha DeVane traces DeVane's extensive career, from her early paintings and works on paper to more recent video artworks and interactive sculpture.
A prolific artist, wayfinder and storyteller, DeVane has spent decades learning and making art about the most profound phenomena of our human condition: spirituality, mythology, and transformative experience, including experiences of hardship. Over the last five decades, as she traveled in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, she became inspired by the stories and characters she encountered. Her artwork brings the unexpected to light, while finding new nuances in the old and familiar, and surprising intersections among those cultures.
A highlight of the exhibition is a large-scale carved sculpture, "Nkisi Woman-Universal Nkisi" (2021-22), which will be activated over the course of the exhibition by visitors who are invited to add beads to its surface. The nkisi is a Kongo cultural figure invested with sacred energy, and this sculpture will catalyze communion and community-building. The work reflects DeVane's fascination with how materials convey meaning and reemerge as myths and memories.
The exhibition also celebrates Oletha DeVane's collaborative activities. Her long-standing collaboration with poet and media personality Tadia Rice, Beyond Bars: Prison Women Speak, will be updated for the exhibition in the form of new video works.
